When you know less than nothing about gardening, the last thing you need is a technical textbook, written by an expert gardener, with no idea of how to engage with absolute beginners. This book is the exact opposite. His tone is knowledgeable, and what he has to say is based on years of experience, but how he writes is like a favourite uncle, giving you his best advice over a mug of tea, flat cap and wellies on, and by the end of each chapter, you're ready to grab your spade, trowel and watering can. Fantastic for new homeowners, career people with no time for a large garden or even parents looking to work on fun gardening projects with their little 'uns. Worth the read.

My situation;- had an allotment some 30 years ago, no gardening since, semi retired and transforming a small garden which has enough room (just) for a greenhouse.
Bought this book hoping it would help me and it ticks every box on my list. It is specific to small gardens and that is what I wanted. I was fearful that (as with other topics sometimes) it would be 25% small gardens and 75% basic gardening from scratch that can be picked up from lots of other books. I was not disappointed as this book filled my every requirement.

The way I read it, the second time through, was to use highlighter for the sections(for sections read vegetables) that I wanted to grow and underline in biro the important points such as soile type, container size, dates for growing etc.

The book rests on a shelf in my greenhouse next to the chair in the corner (okay it's a retreat also) and is used constantly. This being my first year back as a veg and herb grower I am not yet sure how much it has helped but as we go through winter and approach my first spring, it will be used more and more.

This is a slim book packed full of text with some interesting and useful information specifically catered to growing fruit and veg in small spaces as the title states. It's a British book. He covers a good selection of vegetables, fruit and herbs including referencing popular crops which aren't necessairly good for container growing and others which do well. He shares his own experience in an easy to read way.

However, it doesn't go into some of the detail which I've picked up from other sources. But it does share some insoghts I haven't found elsewhere. So I think a good reference book to be used in conjunction with other growing guides.
