I really liked this one! A welcome improvement over the first book in the series (Corralled), mainly because I liked the heroine, 24 year-old Harper Masterson, so much.
Former pageant queen and 'girly-girl' Harper, the middle of three sisters, is the family's caretaker. Her older sister is overseas serving in the military, her bad-rep Mom flew the coop with her boyfriend and left Harper to tend to her younger (and self-centered) teenage sister. Responsible Harper has put her education and her dreams of a career on hold in order to take care of her sister and see to her future. Harper's in a bind because one of her dead-end, low paying jobs has come to an end, and she desperately needs another job to make ends meet. Little sister Bailey is set to graduate from high school in a few short months, and there's scholarship offers on the table. If Harper can find another job (besides her nail tech job) in small Muddy Gap, Wyoming to cover expenses for just the next few months, she'll take off with Bailey and settle in whatever college town Bailey chooses once she graduates. But her mother has angered a lot of town-folk with her loose ways, and no one in Muddy Gap is eager to do Harper any favors. Her friend Celia (Corralled) thinks she might have a solution to Harper's dilemma, and sets her up with a job with family friend and rancher, Bran Turner.

Bran has known Harper for a few years, ever since she moved to town in her late teens. But he's always been intimidated a bit by her beauty, and treats her in a stand-offish manner. But Bran's in a bind on his ranch--his only ranch hand has been injured, there's no men available to hire temporarily, and it's the busy calving season. But desperate times call for desperate measures, so he reluctantly agrees to hire the totally inexperienced and desperate-for-a-job Harper. She's still beautiful, she tempts him big-time, but she'll only be working here for a few months. Surely he can put up with temptation for that long?
Well you know where this one's heading. Harper turns out to be a hard worker, impresses Bran with more than her blonde beauty and curvy body, and the two of them make a great working team. But the attraction grows hotter and hotter each day, and soon the 'employer' and 'employee' can't resist each other another day. Loner Bran has a bit of a trust issue, has never let a woman totally into his life, but something about Harper calls to him. What harm can come of an affair that will only last a few months? There's no way either can get attached if Harper's eventually going to move away, right?
This one was hot, hot, hot! I loved Harper and Bran--thought they were perfect for each other. Lots and lots of hot bedroom action as Bran teaches the somewhat inexperienced Harper all she needs to know about pleasure. Lots of variety here...including a mutual 'spanking' scene, and a hot time in a store dressing room. *whew*
This wasn't a total sexfest--there was plenty of story to go along with all the bedroom action. Some nice character development too--I really felt that I knew Bran and Harper. There was also oodles of characters introduced (or reintroduced). Clearly this is LJ's future direction, as soon as she runs out of McKays (Rough Riders). Bran is childhood friends with Hank Lawson (Corralled), his older brother Abe (the upcoming Wrangled and Tangled), and about 5 other 'colorful' guys. There was one character introduced, a studly veterinarian named August Fletcher, who I thought was going to have a bigger role in this book, but alas, it was not to be. Hopefully he'll pop up again somewhere down the line?
Fans of LJ who were a bit underwhelmed by Corralled or were turned off by the characters' actions in that book should find Saddled and Spurred more to your liking. It's a more traditional erotic romance--no ménage here or anything really kinky--just some hot, intense lovin' and a little bit of humor (look for a scene involving Bran's goats--really funny!).

What made the book especially enjoyable for me was the likability of the characters. Bran was a little moody, intense and demanding at times, but also could be sweet and caring. Harper was a hard worker who put others happiness before her own, and was sweet to others and just a bit sassy to Bran--they had some awesome chemistry. I cared what happened to them which made me more connected to the story. This was one quick, hot story, and came darn close to the best of the Rough Riders series. I'm eagerly anticipating the next book in what now looks to be a very promising series. 4 1/2 stars

Today I finished your erotic masterpiece ‘Saddled and Spurred’. Ms. James there is something special about your stories. I have a bad habit of forgetting I have two small children needing my upmost attention and a hubby waiting for dinner when Im reading your books. I think im in need of a dirty spanking. Well in my defence I only think this way because you seem to always include spanking in your books and all the chic’s love it.
I was so excited when your second in this series was released. You have such a knack for weaving in all the secondary characters – it leaves me hanging for more of your books. You have the most wicked imagination for sex. If only I could be half as naughty as you. Your characters always come with the standard baggage – but who cares, cause there HAWT!
I am however finding a repeating trend in all your novels. One being, all the men have to been dominate in the bedroom while little miss Sass has to surrender. Two being; there is always, always, always anal play. And when we combine the two it becomes ‘Me man, me shove cock up arse, you like it” followed by the man beating his chest in a most animalistic way – oh! And he has to ‘ROAR’ when he blows his load. Now I see the potential in this series!! I am a diehard fan of Lorelei James'. I love her Rough Rider series and thought the first book of Blacktop Cowboys was good, but lacking compared to Rough Riders. Saddle and Spurred has made the turn back to what I love about Lorelei James; hot, hot adventuresome sex with characters you love and good stories. When I am finished with a LJ book, I can't wait for the next one to come out because the potential characters and story lines are alluring and enticing. I didn't feel that after Corralled, but my anticipation after Saddled and Spurred is red hot! Many sexy details and story lines about future cowboys came out.
Harper needs a job so she can take care of her bratty sister who is about to graduate from high school. Her mother is bad news and ran off with a married man leaving behind a bad reputation and many strikes against her daughters because of it. So Harper a beauty queen and girlie girl takes a job as hired hand on Bran Turner's ranch. Bran is in desperate need of help after his employee breaks his hip working for him. He hires Harper unknowingly after being manipulated into it by their mutual friend Celia Lawson. Bran reluctantly takes on Harper fighting his instant attraction and realizes she is a hard worker and it is only for 3 months. They both want each other so bad and finally give in after some good sexual tension. Their first time together is awesome because Bran doesn't live up to his hype and her expectations- those cowboys need to be taken down a notch every once and awhile. Let's just say Harper is never disappointed again and there is many, many agains. I liked how there wasn't game playing between Bran and Harper, they were very real with each other and you can see their love grow. I also loved the fainting goats and had been looking for them after the many comments and reviews they were mentioned in. What I found the most ironic about them was that they were given to Bran by one of his ex-girlfriends. What a creative and annoying gift.
My only slight knock to the book was with the ending, not that it wasn't good, it was fabulous, but was very reminiscent to my favorite book from LJ, Cowgirl Up and Ride. CU&R has an incredible ending too and I have read it over and over again when I need a cry and a sigh. Harper's speech to Bran and his gift's to wooing her back is similar to Cord's speech to his mother and Cord's map to AJ's heart in wooing her back. It didn't give me the "wow", but I still loved it.

Loved it. Harper was sweet and strong and Bran was so delicious. I really loved them together. I also liked that she wasn't so hung up on not wanting to be her mom that she put Bran off over and over. I hate when a character is too stubborn. This flowed a lot better than the first book for me. I think with the first book of a series there is so much set up and character introductions that sometimes the story between the main characters isn't as prominent as I think it should be.
Having said that, I loved that we got to catch up a little with the other characters, Hank and Lainie and what's up with Kyle and Celia...hmmm can't wait for that to play out. Oh and Abe and Janie, that looks like it'll be interesting too.
Can't wait for the next book. Looks like we get another Rough Riders book before Wrangled and Tangled.

GOOD LORD!!! I picked this book up on a whim and it was fabulous! Hot, Alpha rancher who has a very kinky side meets down-on-her-luck former beauty queen and sparks fly. The banter between Bran and Harper was genuine and real and witty and the sex is TOTALLY off-the-charts naughty. I was completely engrossed in small-town Wyoming life while reading this story, and it was perfect for a few hours of escape. I haven't read Book #1 and these characters all stood on their own, but I feel a binge-read coming on. HIGHLY recommend this one!!

4.25 stars. Enjoyed most of this story but the ending (although sweet enough) fell kinda flat for me. Sex scenes were hotter and more detailed than expected.

Hot, sweaty, sticky and sweet...just how I love my cowboy stories. And this one had it all...real, ranching, raunchy cowboys...smart, sassy, sweet women and a whole lot of "gettin' to know ya" smexing.

Harper moved back to Muddy Gap during her third year of college to take care of her baby sister, while her older sister was in the Army. Bailey, the younger sister, takes her sister's money, kindness, and car...and does whatever she wants, whenever she wants to! Harper is a marter, an ad hock mother and a mess! She works two and three jobs to keep her and her sister afloat, but can never catch a break.
Bran is a real cowboy, raised by his grandparents, richer that the whole county, but afraid to let anyone too close. Bran has hidden his real self for so long because he believes his just isn't good looking and interesting enough to keep a gorgeous woman around unless she were to find out about his money. Bran goes out of his way to live on what he makes ranching, and spends even less than that!
Without a second job, Harper is desparate. With an injured ranch hand, Bran is working double shifts. Celia, Harper's only friend in Muddy Gap, suggests Harper work for Bran. While the first day is a test, Harper and her hard working grit earn her the job. Bran is actually impressed with her and as the two spend time together, their mutual lust that has always simmered just below the surface, boils over.
I loved these two together and their mutual exploration of where their passion can take them. I loved Bran's dominant side, but I also loved when they switched it up and other times were just plain kinky (a dressing room scene comes to mind)...be warned, the one backdoor scene was totally unnecessary and I skimmed over it.
I can't wait to read the next one...Abe and Janie are sure to be explosive. I love a jealous ex who hasn't yet finished what he started...and I love when they tell their women that they haven't finished with them yet! Janie has waited 8 years for Abe to claim her, I hope he isn't a day late and a dollar short!

Saddled and Spurred is the story of Bran and Harper. Bran needs a ranch hand after an accident sidelined his employee during calving season….and Harper needs any job she can get. A mutual friend brings these two together. It was only supposed to be temporary…
My thoughts:
I am a huge fan of Lorelei James, but this book wasn’t her best. It was ok. It was hot and cold...there were points I was jumping up and twirling (that’s what I do when I am reading a romance that makes me feel all giddy...picture Julie Andrews on the mountain...at least I don’t sing...the neighbors can barely handle the twirling) and there were points when I was rolling my eyes and skipping pages...already knowing what was going to happen next. The characters were likeable (for the most part) I enjoyed Bran...I mean what’s not to like he is a sexy cowboy...even with a little awkwardness...but he did frustrate me when it felt like he didn’t stick up for Harper to Les (another ranch hand). I definitely stopped twirling then and lost some respect for his character. Harper on the other hand... was a great character. I really liked that she was both a pageant queen as well as down to earth, smart, loyal, independent, hard-working, and sacrificed her own plans to raise her sister. The two together...never gave me the butterflies in the stomach feeling. It just didn’t seem like they were connected. There were some weird instances in the book that made these two feel even less connected. I know this is before they “get together”, but at one point when Harper first starts working for him, she has an accident and Bran calls a large animal veterinarian to check her out. A doctor that normally works on heifers...it was bizarre. I also thought it was weird that the first sex scenes were clumsy...and according to Harper unsatisfying. I know some may argue that this made things more realistic, but I read fiction because it doesn’t have to be. I want my romances to be magical.
At the end of the day...I did enjoy the read and will pick up the next book in this series...and hope for more butterflies and twirling. Im just a girl constantly searching for the next HEA!

I'm conflicted about this book. Objectively, I'm pretty sure it's a good example of erotic romance and a couple exploring beyond "vanilla" sex. My ratings are subjective, though, and I can't say it was more than just "okay" for me. I found myself skim-reading the sexytimes to get back to the plot. Unfortunately, I thought the plot itself was rather bare-bones and couldn't hold my interest enough.
I initially liked the characters a lot. Harper, the surprisingly down to earth and friendly beauty queen, began as a super sympathetic character, but then I found myself squirming that she was TOO easy-going and doormat-ish, letting her family ride roughshod over her and taking such a submissive role in her relationship with Bran.
Bran was a cute and laid-back cowhunk, so it surprised me when he was all dominant and alpha in the bedroom (and the living room, and the dressing room, etc...) This aspect of the book was okay... Again, I don't know why, but I found myself skimming over the numerous variations of their having sex. I guess I just didn't feel any emotional connection between the two, which was reinforced by their entering into the relationship as a purely sexual one, thinking there was a predetermined "expiration date" that would occur when Harper moved away.
I also felt that Bran was using this sexual relationship to explore his kinky side, and it wasn't like Harper herself was special and brought that out in him. Rather, I got the impression he was just waiting for a "willing victim," if you will (sounds terrible, but that's what it seemed like to me). Generally, Bran would have been a decent character until Les (his curmudgeon of an up-til-then-injured ranch hand) entered the picture. At that point, I couldn't forgive Bran for not sticking up for Harper when Les bad-mouthed her.
That said, I'm not writing off either erotic romance or this author entirely. I think I had some issues with believing that Bran and Harper fell in love with each other, given that the extent of the relationship that we're shown seems to be mainly physical. I'm interested in reading Abe and Janie's book, though, because I feel the romance aspect might be more believable when the characters have a long history behind them already.

I think I had some issues with believing that Bran and Harper fell in love with each other, given that the extent of the relationship that we're shown seems to be mainly physical. I'm interested in reading Abe and Janie's book, though, because I feel the romance aspect might be more believable when the characters have a long history behind them already.

I've read a large majority of Lorelei James's book and enjoyed them - some I loved - but the first book in this series was a total dud for me. So I was wary of this second book but I knew I had to give it a chance because LJ had proven time and again before that she can write a good erotic romance. And I'm so glad I gave this book a chance. I really enjoyed it, so much more than the first book.

Summary:
Harper Masterson hasn't had the best life. With a flakey, slut mother who up and left town, leaving Harper in charge of her little sister, Harper's had it rough. Along with that, she's got an undeserved bad reputation based on her mother's bad deeds. She can't wait to get out of Muddy Gap, Wyoming once her sister graduates high school, but things get tougher when she loses one of her jobs. Then a friend of hers recommends a job to her - as a ranch hand for local rancher Bran Turner.
When he opens his door to his new prospective ranch hand, Bran is shocked to see not only a female, but Harper. His friend hadn't told him who was coming by to interview. But Bran is desperate for help and Harper really needs the job so he gives her a chance. Surprisingly, things go well...and the sparks that ignite between the two and a total bonus. I was so happy this book ended up being leaps and bounds better than the first book. I was soo disappointed in that one, after having enjoyed so many books by LJ. I wondered if her main stream debut series was gonna be a dud all around, but LJ really redeemed herself with this book.
My biggest complaint with the first book in the series was that I did feel the romance at all, and I didn't really care for the heroine all that much. The whole set up was just off. This time around, with this book, the romance is much better. I really liked Harper as a character. She's got a lot of spunk and determination, having made it through what she has in her life. She tackles things head on. And Bran is a pretty good guy as well. Both were likable characters that you felt like you really knew as you read the story. Together, they've got some great chemistry and I really enjoyed reading about these two, separate and as a pair. It was just a really solid romance.
And of course, there's plenty of hot sex, but not so much that it takes over the story and leaves everything else lacking. There's a good blend between the romance, storyline, and sex. But what there is of the sex is pretty damn hot. The kink factor is fairly mild (compared to some other LJ books)...you get some chocolate with your vanilla, but not much that would hit readers Yuck! button.
LJ also introduces you to a cast of other characters that we'll probably get books about down the road. So it's nice to see where the series is heading. And you get some scenes with the H/H from the last book. Always nice to see what past characters are up to.
Another great part of the book was the humor...not that I would call it a comedic book in any sense, but there were a few scenes that were funny. The best being the scene near the beginning with the goats. That was absolutely freaking hilarious. I was laughing so hard my eyes were watering. I think it's probably one of the funniest scenes I've ever read in a romance book...and that's saying a lot considering how many books I've read. But it was a great one and one I'll be remembering for a long time.
I don't really have any negatives to complain about. Nothing really bothered me on a noteworthy level. It was just an all around solid book that I read quickly and enjoyed. For you LJ fans who, like me, didn't care for the first book, I think you'll find this one much more likable.

This is the second in Lorelei James’s contemporary western series called Blacktop Cowboys. The first was Corralled and some of the characters are featured in Saddled and Spurred. However, Saddled and Spurred can easily be read by itself.
In this enjoyable western, Bran Turner is a rancher down on his luck in a depressed area of Wyoming. His only ranch hand suffered an injury during the busiest time of the year and help is no where to be found. That is until his friend’s younger sister plays a trick on him. She offers him a worker to assist him but Bran is startled to find it is the super feminine and sexy beauty queen Harper Masterson. Bran is torn, he needs a hand desperately and Hare is certainly easy on the eyes. But can she actually help?
Harper desperately needs help. She and her sister are stranded in this poor town when her mother up and left, leaving behind a scandal and some serious town resentment But Harper wants her younger sister to graduate before they get out of Wyoming for good. However, in this small town, work is difficult to find and her she has just been let go from her latest job. In a fit of self-pity, she bares all to her best friend who tells her she might have work for her. But Harper really has no idea what is in store for her or how much this job will change her life.
This book was a pleasure to read. The author really gives the reader a feel a small western town down on its luck. She also delves into Harper and Bran’s personality so they felt like real human beings. I also liked how Harper slowly adjusts to the fascinating world of ranching/farming and begins to really appreciate it. Bran is a hardworking, modest guy who you can’t help liking. Compared to the first book, I think this book goes more into the relationship/dynamics between the two main characters. While it still has some very steamy scenes, I would say it doesn’t quite have as many as the first since the relationship between the main characters starts slower.
Saddled and Spurred is an emotionally satisfying western. Readers who love westerns will be sure to appreciate this wonderful romance.

Don't let the inspirational cover look-a-like fool you! =) This book is hawt! After finishing Corralled, and even though I liked it, there was something missing. I think that something was the family and community bond that is now present in Saddled and Spurred.
Hank and Kyle, the men of book one, are actually all part of a group of friends that we learn more about in this book. Of course there's Hank's brother Abe, and one of the buddies is Bran. Reserved, calm, cool Bran. Excellent rancher and excellent fisherman. Not the guy that is the best looking to always get the girl. Definitely the guy that thinks a beauty queen like Harper would never look his way.
But I have a secret to tell you, I am falling a little bit in love with Bran! Not that I've personally had a cowboy myself, but maybe Ms. James could introduce me to a Bran?!?! Because he rocked my world! Bran is a dirty talker to boost, and I just love that Harper is willing to give herself over to him.
And Harper was no slouch either. I adored her. Beautiful as she is and yes a beauty queen, she is no primadonna. She's struggled to make ends meet doing whatever she has to do to support herself and her sister, and put her through school, giving up on her own dreams. And now she ends up working for Bran as his temporary ranch hand!
Then there's the secondary characters. Hank's sibligns, Abe and Celia, I can't wait to read about them! The new resort in town is bringing with it some new characters to stir things up. I can't wait for Abe's book next!!!

Best LJ book ever, even beating my favourite of her Rough Riders series - Cowgirl Up and Ride. I can't put my finger on every little thing that made Saddled and Spurred spectacular except to say that each aspect of it was quite simply perfect.
The hero - Bran - was hot, hard-working, gruff but not rude, caring but not sickly sweet. He wasn't overly Alpha but still permeated a strong, silent type of vibe.
Harper, our heroine, was fantastic. YES! FANTASTIC HEROINE AT LAST! She was a former beauty queen with brains, decency and common sense. I loved the fact that such an amazingly beautiful woman could still get her hands dirty as a ranch hand.
As with most James romantica, I couldn't put it down. I think what made this one different from the Rough Riders series was the fact that the sex didn't overtake the storyline. Not to say that it always does with RR, but it can feel a little tedious at times... using the same moves and arcs over and over.
The Saddled and Spurred storyline was believable and had a lot of feeling. This was the sort of book that I wish I could wipe from my mind just so I could read it for the first time over again. I don't say that too often nowadays but it really was that good.
Also an FYI - this is Book 2 in the Blacktop Cowboys series. I skipped the first one, Corralled, because the threesome vibe of it just didn't appeal to me. I knew that I'd get frustrated by the heroine so have steered clear of it for now. The fact that I skipped it didn't really affect my grasp of the series background at all, you can find your way easily enough.

Desperate for a job, Harper Masterson, former beauty queen and nail technician, finds herself working as a hired hand on Bran Turner's cattle ranch. With her strong work ethic and willingness to learn, Harper impresses the skeptical Bran who soon finds himself incapable of resisting Harper's many charms.
An intriguing premise that has the potential to develop into an entertaining office type romance with numerous conflicts based on Harper's inexperience, Bran's bias and the community's reactions. Unfortunately, what emerges is nothing more than a sex-fest.
While Harper and Bran's characters and backgrounds are fleshed out well and provide excellent material for an opposites attract or love/hate relationship, this fails to materialize and there is very little development of their romance other than the numerous sex scenes, which ultimately merge one into the other.
The secondary storylines involving other characters feel like filler in between bouts of sex and it is difficult to care about any of the townsfolk. That said, some of the best scenes are at the local beauty parlor with the local biddies providing minor comic relief with their somewhat raunchy comments and advice. Sadly, this fails to compensate for the lack of story.
In sum, this is my first Lorelei James novel and I might give another one a try at some time but it isn't a priority.

I had read the first in the series a little while ago but was a little disappointed with it so decided it best to leave them. I was in the mood for an ER last night and this one was close to the top of the pile so decided to give it a go.
I have to say that this was much better and although I enjoyed it a lot more, I still don't think this series is as good as the Rough Riders series.

Hot, Alpha rancher who has a very kinky side meets down-on-her-luck former beauty queen and sparks fly. The banter between Bran and Harper was genuine and real and witty and the sex is TOTALLY off-the-charts naughty. In this enjoyable western, Bran Turner is a rancher down on his luck in a depressed area of Wyoming. Reserved, calm, cool Bran. This was the story of ranch owner, Bran and his inexperienced new ranch hand - and former beauty queen - Harper. They dance around one another for a while, building the sexual tension nicely, but what completely took me by surprise was that the sex between them didn't begin that well at all. When does that ever happen? Bran and Harper were so wonderful together, and they didn't even fight it too much! I loved Harper, she worked so hard at everything she did and in the end even worked hard for herself. Bran was the typical sexy cowboy, but even as such he didn't fight falling for Harper too much. Harper Masterson needs a job. Unfortunately, the only one available is the ranch-hand. Now, to some people that would be the norm, but Harper has some issues:
1. she never really worked on a ranch so she doesn't exactly know what to do (of course, she is a fast learner so that shouldn't be a problem)
2.fainting goats, enough said (I loved that scene, it was so funny)
3. and the most important thing - her new boss, Bran.
Bran does need help with his ranch, but being stuck with Harper is not his idea of a good time. Two things to point out about the hero and Heroine:
*Bran Turner wasn't my type of hero, but I liked that the author showed his vulnerabilities and mistakes, in bed and out. In the bedroom, I thought the encounters between Bran and his HEA, Harper, were sort of hot, funny, and ..well..REAL.
*Harper Masterson falls for Bran, her boss, with no wiles, no chases, and no stuck in her head drama (mainly).
Hard on her luck and former beauty queen Harper takes a temporary job as a farm hand to the rather grumpy farmer Bran in this erotic contemporary Western. What I liked: The descriptions of day to day life on the farm gave a realistic atmosphere to the book. I really don’t know how accurate it was, but I believed I was reading about a farm. Bran Turner needs a hired hand to help him through calving season as his regular guy has been in an accident and broken his hip. However, no one has responded to his advertisements and he is on his own. Harper Masterson has been fired from her part-time job in a tanning salon and desperately needs money so that her little sister can go to college. This time we find a beauty queen who is as completely opposite of the stereotype as possible moonlighting as a ranch hand. Obviously when you are working for the to die for cowboy who loves to give orders ending up tied to his bed is inevitable. Also preferable.
Sex scenes were hotter and more detailed than expected. GOOD LORD!!! I picked this book up on a whim and it was fabulous! This book had it all, a sweet, fun, steamy, sexy, heart-warming love story. Bran is the gruff, charming cattle rancher who hires the loveable, strong-willed Harper as his helper. It was fun to see their working relationship evolve into something more and watch Bran turn inside out with his desire for Harper. She was gutsy and funny, everything I love in a female character. Laugh out loud moments, terrific dialogue and very hot passionate sex that is classic Lorelei James. Bran has the occasional bout of foot-in-mouth disease, but in the end he finds all the right words to declare his love for Harper….such a sweet HEA!
Longtime friends living in a small town is the appealing element in this series and should prove to be fun as each of them find a love of their own.

I really enjoyed this book, so much more than the first one, I knew that Corralled was a fluke for me because I am a great lover of Lorelei James and this book was more of what I love from her. This story felt more real to me, the love, the emotion, everything was so much easier to relate to!! Bran was the kind of hard ass Alpha that I love and even though Harper was 'technically' a beauty queen, she was one kick ass chick and I loved her!! Together they detonated off the pages!! Of course there was also the infamous goat scene, which had me laughing right out loud!!! LOL
I hope that book 3 in this series is just a wonderfully smokin' and I can't wait to read it!!

I'm really enjoying the blacktop cowboys series. This was the story of ranch owner, Bran and his inexperienced new ranch hand - and former beauty queen - Harper. They dance around one another for a while, building the sexual tension nicely, but what completely took me by surprise was that the sex between them didn't begin that well at all. When does that ever happen?
There was some low level angst and, once they discovered where each other's buttons were, some sizzling smut along with lots of info about life on a remote cattle ranch. This one is a perfect escape into another world for a few hours.
Recommended.

Opening line:"You're firing me?"
Cattleman Bran Turner (Bran, really!?) is left shorthanded during calving season and since rural Wyoming and in particular the sleepy town of Muddy Gap doesn’t have an overabundance of qualified help he reluctantly hires Harper Masterson for the job. Now while this down on her luck, former beauty queen may not look the part of your typical ranch hand (the gem encrusted sunglasses and leopard print gloves are a dead giveaway) Harper proves to be a quick study and more then capable of gettin’ er done.
What starts out as a strictly a professional relationship of course builds into something more; Bran just can’t keep his eyes off Harpers curves and she in turn doesn’t mind getting down and dirty. He can’t believe that this gorgeous beauty queen would have anything to do with the likes of him and Harper well, she can’t believe what she’s been missing, who knew sex could be so good.
Besides there’s no harm done right? They’ve both agreed that this is only going to be a temporary affair, just until Bran’s injured help returns and Harpers younger sister Bailey graduates high school. A few weeks tops, then she’s outta this dusty little town, and never looking back, right?
If you’ve read any of Lorelei James’s other books (I highly recommend the Roughriders series) then you’ll know what to expect from this one. Erotic love scenes, emotion filled storylines, a couple of dustups at the local saloon and a whole town of unique characters and situations to keep you interested.
I have to be honest though, this book didn’t quite grab me like her Roughriders series always does and I was honestly surprised at how difficult a time I had getting into it. Neither of the main characters made much of an impression on me until later on in the book (which ended up being awesome) and I just never felt their supposed “spark”. And while the sex scenes where certainly steamy enough they lacked genuine emotion or even excitement of the usual level I’ve come to expect from James. It just seemed like our couple was going through the motions (sexy as they may be) and I had a hard time caring.
However like I said at around chapter 16 it all seemed to come together. With the ranch job ending, Harper is leaving, Bran’s not stopping her and nobody is talking about how they really feel. I also enjoyed the storyline involving her sister Bailey’s bombshell decision and *sigh, Bran’s last minute attempts at romance. For such a strong silent style he sure came out of his shell. Interesting events also open up for book #3 in the Blacktop Cowboys series; Wrangled and Tangled.

One of the things that I like most about Lorelei James' books is that she is such an adept world builder that I actually enjoy how she weaves characters arcs throughout a series and that the introduction of numerous new characters and plots does not overshadow the excitement of the central romantic relationship.
She excelled at this skill in Saddled and Spurred.
Feeling much more like a contemporary romance than her previous books, Harper and Bran take a bit of time to get to know each other before the action gets going. Bran is an awesome hero. I was really fascinated at the contrast between how Harper and the other ladies in the town saw him and how he saw himself (lots of insecurities). And while he was very much the man in charge he was willing to let himself be vulnerable to Harper.
Harper was also an interesting character. While outwardly her actions might border on being a martyr (she gave up her education and plans to parent her younger sister, she's worked a series of low-paying crappy jobs, her personal life does not exist etc.), she's a very nuanced character who has many different motivations, which are gradually revealed to both the reader and to Harper through the course of the book.
My only negative was that the book felt too short at the end. All the final conflict and making up felt too rushed. But I'm probably just being greedy because I could have stayed with these characters for much longer!

I just love Lorelei James and I love that she's creating a whole new town of cowboys for us to play in. The first book in the Blacktop Cowboys series, Corralled, was good. This one is bettah.
Harper is raising her sister and as soon as her sister graduates in a few months they are both out of the small town of Muddy Gap. The town has judged this beauty queen by her mother's whoring faults for too long and she is ready to be done with them.
Unfortunately the business she clerked for has gone under and she is going to need a job to pay the bills for three months. And that's when her best friend Celia sends her to talk to Bran Larson.
Bran's ranch hand has been injured by a bull and he just needs help a few months while his hand recovers. He's taken adds, called around and no one is interested in part time work, so he has nothing to loose when the beauty queen shows up wanting to give it a try.
I enjoyed watching them become friends first. Having them dispel their preconceived notions about each other. Neither of them is quick to trust and both are holding back, knowing that Harper wants to follow her sister to college.
This book also spends a good amount of time building the town and the other characters. Clearly Renner's new business adventure is going to be a focal point for the town.
I think LJ's fans will be pleased.

Lorelei James is one fantastic, sizzling hot blooded, truly talented lady and I would love the opportunity to buy her a drink, but alas, I live on the other side of the world.
I haven’t read a Lorelei James novel in a while. Mainly because she popped my erotica cherry and whilst immersed in the Rough Riders series my husband refused to keep up with my sexual demands and declined taking time off work to “meet my needs” whilst reading said series. It was sooo god damn hot that I had to take a step back and continuously chant to myself “I am in control of my lust, I am in control of my lust”, so I dived into books by other authors but by divine intervention I caught a glimpse of the ‘Saddled & Spurred’ cover and couldn’t get it out of my mind until I started reading.
I was NOT disappointed. I absolutely loved this book. It was sweet, it was sexy and it was panty scorching hot. I love Lorelei’s cowboys, every single one of them is individual but seems to have a great mix of intense masculinity, sexy, sexy bodies, hot as hell moves in the boudoir aswell as the right amount of romance.
Mmmm mmm mm, me thinks there will be sweet dreams tonight.

I loved this book. LJ came through with another great story and in my opinion much better than Corralled. I really liked Bran and Harper and felt they were perfect together. I loved that Harper was such a strong woman and didn't take crap. She was a girly-girl but could get get down in the cow poop with the best of them. She was a hard worker and took care of her bratty, self centered sister. There were so many times I laughed out loud such as with the goat incident and the bunnies. These two had some major chemistry and some blazin' hot nekkid cowboy lovin'. MERCY! At the end when Bran told Harper all the things he loved about her, I just bawled at how sweet and romantic he was. Now, I can't wait to read Abe's story. That one should be good too.

I really liked this book A LOT, but I can't say that it amazed me.
The story was good, the characters very likable. It took a while for the heat to turn up but when it did, I think it blazed too much too fast and too often and the story lag a bit at that point.
If your a fan of Lorelei's then I highly recommend you give this book a try. It was well worth reading and I look forwards to the next book.

This story takes place in the town of Muddy Gap, Wyoming. Sound quaint? Not really. No B & B’s for this little place. Former local beauty queen Harper Masterson (love the Name) has a drunken skank for a mother that ran off and left her to look out for her younger sister, Bailey, who is a Senior in high school. The oldest sister, Liberty, is enlisted in the Army and currently stationed in Afghanistan. Momma Masterson ran off with some local putz, pissed off everyone in town, leaving Harper strapped for friends and employment choices. She holds down two jobs to support herself and Bailey, who is supposedly going to college in the Fall, and Harper plans to move to wherever Bailey goes to school to supply her younger sister with monetary and moral support. When she gets axed at the local tanning salon because of slow business, Harper is understandably distraught. Like a ray of light her best friend Celia calls in Harper’s time of woe, and gets an earful of sobs. But Celia has a devious plan for her BFF…….
Bran Turner is a rangy local cowboy who owns a modest ranch outside of town that he inherited from his Grandparents. He runs it himself along with his old and grumpy right hand, Les. When Poor Les has a little mishap with a bull, rendering him useless for a few months, Harper shows up at Bran’s door, ready to make some cash, mend fences, and start birthin’ some bovine babies.
We all know that chaos ensues at this point.
Bran is Proud. Bran is Cocky. Bran is kinda Sweet. Bran has a serious case of foot in mouth disease. Seriously, this guy has no filter, but you love him anyway. He says whatever he thinks and is a little rough around the edges. Unlike most Heroes in our beloved romance novels, Bran has a little insecurity about his appeal to women-especially this woman. He is in constant awe of Harper’s beauty and more or less sees a glowing aura around her at all times. I have to say this is kind of a new aspect for a hero and frankly very refreshing. Usually, it is conveyed that the main Male character of a story is very confident about his looks, and of course his sexual prowess...it hints at vulnerability if he is not. I feel like most Authors shy away from this, thinking that a man cannot possibly be “The Perfect Alpha Male” if he is at all insecure or shows any vulnerability before the big “fall” in the book. I disagree. Ms. James let him be a little unsure of himself, and therefore more relateable. I’m not saying he is a wimpy limp noodle or, gasp…Beta. He is just more humanized.
There was a lot of give and take between Harper and Bran. He wasn’t weak and neither was she. They both wanted to be worthy of each other, and had genuine love and affection, not just lust. Their banter was hilarious and is current with the times. Since Lorelei James herself lives in the Dakotas, you get the feeling she is pulling from some of her personal experience. I love that she can walk the walk and talk the talk. We learn all about ranching alongside Harper because of this. I always feel the best books are the ones were you feel like you’re living inside the story, and Saddled and Spurred delivers that to the reader in spades.
And we can’t talk about a Lorelei James book without talking about the Luuuuv scenes. In my opinion, this book and its predecessor, Corralled, are not as erotic as the Rough Riders series. Saddled and Spurred is very, very, hot, but the love scenes didn’t feel like as much of the focus of the book as some of James’ previous novels. To me, the scenes could possibly be a little disappointing to readers familiar with this Author’s other series because I would describe them as just a little kinky, definitely not vanilla, but maybe more like butter pecan…..however the love scenes are still great and consistent with James’ style. I personally felt nothing was missing. She has all the Wild West infusion and the periphery of characters that we will come to know and love just as much as her beloved Rough Riders. I can’t WAIT for the next book in the series, Wrangled and Tangled (Nov 1, 2011).
