Tweetonomics: Everything You Need to Know About Economics in 140 Characters or Less

Rate this book
Economic news has been making major worldwide headlines in recent months, but those among us who live outside the esoteric world of high finance are too often mystified by bankers' and economists' jargon. Author Katie Huston has come to our rescue with Tweetonomics, an entertaining and informative book that explains each of the most important economic terms and ideas in 20 "tweets" or less. Limiting her explanations to 140-character "tweets," she resorts to clear, simple English that flies straight to the point. In nine chapters she explains how the economy works, the role of governments, the big economic ideas, and the thinkers like Adam Smith and John Maynard Keynes who created them. Here are short and sweet definitions of terms that include--

Free Market * Supply and Demand * GDP
Balance of Trade * Monetarism * Keynesianism
Marxism * Derivatives Market * Stock Options
Hedge Funds * Dow Jones * NASDAQ
Credit Default Swaps * Fannie Mae * Freddie Mac . . . and many more.

In these extraordinary economic times Tweetonomics is a book that belongs on everybody's must-read list. Brief, pithy, and to-the-point definitions are complemented with clever cartoon illustrations.

Nic Compton is a writer/photographer specialising in sailing - but with a keen interest in environmental issues. After an idyllic childhood on boats in the Mediterranean, he returned to the UK at age 14 to complete his formal education, including in a degree in English with American & Commonwealth Arts at Exeter University. After a decade or so working as a journeyman shipwright, he studied Journalism at City University, eventually fetching up at the offices of Classic Boat in land-locked Croydon. He was deputy editor and then editor of the magazine from 1994 to 2000. That was when he gave up the security of the monthly pay packet for the vagaries of freelance life. Since then he has travelled the world as a writer/photographer, contributing to a variety of magazines, and has written 15 books mostly about boats. He recently completed an MA in Global Political Economy at Sussex University, and co-wrote two books about economics. He currently lives by the River Dart in Devon, UK, from where he sails a Romilly 22 called Ramona. More information at www.niccompton.co.uk.

Tweetonomics: Everything You Need to Know About Economics in 140 Characters or Less

You can’t argue with a book that has pre-emoted you on its brevity (140 chars or less). So take this as a very easy skim and reminder of economic terms that you think you know, or suddenly realise that you don’t!!

Very good quick basic overview of the topic. However, the index could use some work.

I'm not an economist, but I love twitter and I care about the economy. So getting this book was a no brainer. Simple. Quick. To the point. Great.

The summary of Economics is really arranged into Twitter Style. For somehow, it refreshed my mind about the topic.
