this is a bible. thank you mr. curious gorge for showing us all the cool waterfall spots. so dreamy! my gf wouldn’t stop talking about how much she loved this book it almost drove me crazy.
This is not the most aesthetically pleasing book, but it totally gets the job done. Once upon a time, Oregon was a blip on the screen. Portland wasn't just, "Portland" it was "Portland, Oregon" not to be confused with "Portland, Maine". But the blip has become the main attraction and Portland is Portland Oregon unless otherwise noted. So, for those of us that grew up here (humble brag), it is continually surprising that the local spots are now THE tourists spots. If you're going to hike Angel's Rest get there EARLY, or go LATE, Weekends...forget about it. Quick trip to Multnomah falls for thermos coffee and a nice view? -ha! not anymore, not unless you like Disneylandesque crowds. I love Oregon, I like hiking, I prefer to avoid crowds - and this book does a great job of pointing out spots (hiking spots, as well as places to eat, and what-not) that are less crowded, or out of the way. It's got the biggies like Dog Mountain, Crown Point, etc, etc, but it's got lots of other options that, after 40+ years here I hadn't known about and have since enjoyed.
The way I started reading this book just because our airbnb had it… but we ended up reading it cover to cover and taking it on all of our hikes. Literally the best guidebook ever. Rick Steve is shaking. PLS WRITE MORE!!!!!!!!!
Very well-done hiking guide book. I love the chatty tone, the inside information. I've gone on several hikes in this book, and am glad I did. Though I do need to say that Cook's idea of a moderate hike is a 50-year-old-woman's idea of a strenuous hike! Loose gravel and near-vertical ascents get tagged "moderate" and, well, let's just say I was surprised.
