Having just finished Lynn Viehl's latest Kyndred novel FrostFire I have this to say, this is one of the most CONFUSING AND FRUSTRATING series I have ever read. Allow me to explain. Both of her series, the Darkyn and the Kyndred kind of intermingle, in that some characters are Darkyn and some are Kyndred but they both are and were wanted by Genero and the bio tech companies, they both are immoratal and have some unique characteristics as enhanced people, but some of the way their gifts present are different. Here's the thing though, the way Lynn writes, nothing is ever clear. Nothing is ever fully explained the way I at least like it to be. Its not about me being simplistic, its about me wanting a clear explanation of what the heck is going on. I'd like to know what Lilah's gifts are and what she transforms herself into and what happens when she gets mad or has a bad dream. All we know by the end of the book is she has some kind of super Dr. Doolittle thing going on, but why does that make her transform. How does Guy/Guide/Walker go from Darkyn to whatever he is now, and what is he now? Still immortal, human what is he, and is he a were-animal? Was he always a were something or had the ability to be a were animal... This number of questions, this gluttonous caucophony of unanswered stuff is what pisses me off about a Lynn Viehl book. Sure its written well and it has some great points but there is so much about it that is still unanswered, it makes me super angry, then you get to the next book and its nothing.
I read the book before this, Dreamveil and the one before it, and though Dreamveil was good, in so much as it clearly explained Rowan's problem, it left this GAPING hole explaining what the hell was going on with Luc and his second half, alter person/alterbody, alter personality, and then it didn't explain why he was the carbon copy of Michael, a Darkyn. It NEVER explained his origins or how he came to be. Its almost like Ms. Viehl came up with a list of the craziest most out there conditions she could think of, gave these characters those conditions, and said, "genetic testing and vampires should cover it" and just decided not to explain where this stuff came from.
The characters themselves, their interactions, all interesting fine and good, but what I want to know, what I think everyone wants to know is never addressed or solved.

Kyndred beast 'whisperer' Lilah's very bad day takes a turn for the deadly when Lilah is drugged, kidnapped and handcuffed to a dead marine, both destined for DNA harvesting to fuel Genhance's efforts to recreate the experiments that created the Kyndred. But it turns out that the marine, Walker, is not as dead as he seems and soon Walker and Lilah make their escape in the snowy mountains of Colorado. But even as they find refuge in a remote town filled with secrets, they aren't out of the woods yet. With multiple parties hunting Lilah and Walker - both separately and together - their allies are just as dangerous as their foes.

Frostfire takes a while to get rolling, there are just so many threads setting up the members of the very large cast - both the leads, their hunters, another of the Kyndred, the residents of the isolated mountain town, and also past Darkyn leads, Nicola and Gabriel, who also on a hunt for a rogue of their kind. I did really like one of the side pairs - the sheriff and his really interesting one night stand - but I have to admit that I was a bit impatient with some of the other parts of the setup. I was dying to find out more about the mysterious Walker and rushed though some of the other threads to get back to the parts with Walker and Lilah. I was eager to get back to watching their relationship develop, as the mysterious Walker finds in Lilah the woman who can soothe his savage beast and bring him back from the edge of rage and madness, and Lilah finds in Walker someone with whom she can share her secrets and someone to end her loneliness and isolation.

Once Viehl finally gets all of the ground work in place though, she does pull everything together with plenty of action, some steamy bonding, and a pretty amazing display of power by Lilah. So even though Frostfire didn't end up being my favorite of the Kyndred books - I really liked the first two - Viehl manages to pull off a surprising revelation at the end of the story that fans of her Darkyn books will appreciate and that made the story for me. So with the next Kyndred lead, the crippled 'touch sensitive' Samuel already waiting in the wings I am ready for Nightshine now.

My rating: 4.5

Lynn Viehl's has a way of building a tantalizing world around alluring characters that just fascinates this reader. Like every book before in the Darkyn and Kyndred series, Frostfire was no exception and I fell headlong into reading it.

Frostfire is a page turner with a plot that grabbed my attention with the mystery that surrounded the different secret groups, who all seem to be trying to get the upper hand in the secret world of the paranormals this time around by controlling Lilah and Walker. The couple, Lilah and Walker, in this paranormal romance had me pulling for them throughout the whole story with an ending that was a terrific surprise. I'm mean, just WOW! The romance between these two was palpable and awesome in it's steaminess. I also liked the cameos from characters in past books for these series.

Frostfire is one of those books that you want to read in one gulp and a definite read for readers of this series. Now, I'm anxiously awaiting the next book Nightshine...there was an excerpt at the end of this copy of Frostfire that left me desperate for it. Seriously desperate.

A note to those who haven't read any of the books from the Darkyn or Kyndred series, I highly recommend you start with the first book, If Angels Burn in the Darkyn series. You won't want to miss out on one bit of the Kyn world.

This is, for me, by far the weakest book of the 3. I'm glad I've got it but it will be a while before I read this one again.

Lilah can 'speak' to the animals but suddenly, she can understand human thoughts too. Their powers were also unexplained, the descriptions between them often refers to heat and then his ice cold (the Frostfire of the title presumably) but this is again, never explained. Why can she do things with him and not by herself? The connection is never explained and so lost in the story. Her counterpart in this is a question mark in himself. Who is he? What's his past? Why are the Darkyn after him? Who the hero turns out to be is meaningless if you have not read Darkyn books and even then, as he is so characterless, it does not tie in at all with the earlier story. And how he is turned/not turned is not revealed at all.

There is a lot in this relatively small book but too confusing to be enjoyed. Maybe it will make more sense of a second reading but a really good book should pull the reader back a second time to appreciate the layers, not to simply understand what went on in the first place.

With Frostfire we get Viehl’s take on werewolf lore and, as always it’s unexpected. The thing I love about Viehl’s books is that she always holds something back along the way to keep you guessing. I hate that about her books too because I’m always like, “okay. just give already! Gaaak!”

But in the end, she delivers… as she did with Frostfire. It was fun to discover the true identity of the hero, (you know all along his name is indeed not Walker Kimball), although it made me want to go back and re-read the novel he was first introduced in because I don’t remember him as he’s portrayed here. And I loved Lilah and her powerful abilities. (Though nothing we haven’t seen in comic books/ X-men stories already, which, now that I think of it, the Darkyn/Kyndred novels sorta remind me of anyway considering their abilities and all.)

The beginning of Frostfire starts out with Kyn orphan child, Lilah, (whose beginnings are still part of the overarching mystery of The Kyndred series), drugged and captured for Genhance, (the big bad trying to replicate the Kyn’s supernatural DNA), languishing in the back of a freezer truck with a cadaver… whom isn’t as dead as their captors think.

Picked up dead in Afghanistan, Walker Kimball knows, for him anyways, there are varying shades of death. But what he doesn’t know is that his DNA is shifting… literally.

Whatever’s going on he has to get away and he’s taking the mysterious woman he’s handcuffed to with him. They eventually make their escape into the snowy Colorado mountains- straight into a hidden enclave whom are somehow connected to Walker’s metamorphosis.

Lilah and Walker’s combined DNA seems to affect not only them, but their environment too and when they come together as lovers it changes everything- for shifters and DarKyn alike!

Actually, I really enjoyed this entry into the Kynred series, thankfully I already had the next in the series bought because Frostfire story made me want to read it- immediately.

That was one wacky soap opera. Every time I read a Lynn Viehl book, she stretches bounds. Viehl's Frostfire includes furry people, copper-allergic vampires, and animal whisperers- yes, animal whisperers. Watch out Caesar Milan, animal control officer Lilah Devereux can tame the savage beast. Enter stud and former soldier, Walker Kimball, also a captive of the greedy gene therapies giant, GenHance.

Escape from GenHance, mystery of the hairy people, a rogue Darkyn vampire, and the trials and tribulations of Lilah's clairvoyant friend Samuel Taske-- enough plots for you? There's more. LOL.

I loved it all, even though introducing the freaky Chahanat was pushing it. Only Viehl could go there, and by the end, I was fascinated by them too. Can we have a book for one of them?

Once again, Viehl employs tight prose, a fast pace, brief, newspaper flashbacks, seedy characters, and female spies doing the dirty for the good of the cause, and once again, we learn about the hero's emotional history late into the narrative. I would like that info -which informs our opinion of him- to come earlier, but Viehl did resolve his emotional/personal issues at some length, so I appreciated that.

I liked seeing the tresori in more depth.

Readers liking soft and cuddly heroines will love Lilah (versus the harder Rowan Dietrich from book #2, Dreamveil). Meanwhile, I liked the reappearance of a certain Darkyn, even if I did think his personality flipped 180°. Now I want to read Evermore from the first series again. On an unrelated note, more Richard and Korvel, please. They are so great. I'm a little skeptical about Samuel (he's either fatherly or saintly) as a hero, but I will read #4 anyway. :D

I have been anxiously awaiting the newest Kyndred book; not only did I have it on preorder for my ereader, but I won an early copy. For those of you who are not familiar with the Kyndred series, it is an offshoot from the Darkyn series, which is being featured this month. A lot of the characters from that series show up in passing in the Kyndred books, but unlike the Darkyn the Kyndred are human and mortal.

Established in the Darkyn series, Kyndred are people who have been biologically altered. They have evolved separate from the Darkyn and are subject to a whole other set of hardships in life. Unlike the Darkyn, there is not set society to help protect them. The Kyndred are in the world, for better or worse, on their own and more often than not they are on the run because of what they are.

Frostfire melds a lot of storylines together. I’ll admit that about halfway through the book if you aren’t paying attention closely you will be confused. There are characters that show up from not only the previous Kyndred books, but from the Darkyn series. However, I am possibly the worst person about forgetting names with complex plots that jump around, and I followed it pretty well. There were only a few places where I had to flip back and forth to double check who was who that did what.

I laughed, I cheered, and I’m going to go reread now – because there won’t be a new book from Lynn Viehl for a few months and that makes me sad.

I keep wondering with this series if the author is deliberately trying to be confusing. This story could have easily been a bit more straightforward without losing any suspense or mystery. Attempts to be creative have run a bit amok here. There so many things I'm still confused about that I would have considered central to wrapping up the plot of this story. What is the nature of lilah's power? How is this power connected to Walker? Why are their abilities so strangely varied?
I'm still trying to figure out how Walker/guy/whathisname got furry. It's never explained and I kept wondering if I'd missed something. But even after checking previous stories, I'm still confused.

The problem with this series is the potential for a really great story is usually there and the plot keeps just missing it. I know romance plots tend to rush to the "love you forever" bit but I was still caught by surprise by what is essentially an overnight romance between two people who spent large parts of their initial contact unconscious, immobile, and mildly incoherent. But I would have been willing to put that bit of unbelievable aside if the plot bothered to answer the questions it raises about the characters.

This is a really hard book to review, while I liked it, I was confused for much of the book. There were all these groups, they didn't seem to be connected at all, but as the story went on you could see the connections. What made it harder to figure out what was going on was that it seemed everyone one had more than one name or identity. It was really hard to figure out who were the bad guys and who were the good guys, but that can be very subjective as people can change.

One thing that I really liked about this book was something that I have been waiting for...the Darkyn and the Kyndred to cross paths. As these 2 different series reside in the same world with the same rules it is great to see. I am hoping that there will be more of that in the next book.

The couple in this book were fun, but in a weird way. They each had a quiet way about them that just made you like them. Each one of them had secret upon secret and just when you thought you had heard them all a new one would come out and really throw you.

I really liked the resolution to this book. I found the little Colorado town to be an odd place, but one where odd people sure fit in.

This is the third book in the Kyndred series by Lynn Viehl. I'm partial to stories that have shifters, animal communication, etc.

I liked the main characters of Lilah and Walker. The emotions were believable as were the interactions and relationship between them.

I like twists and turns and this book had some well placed ones that made this story an enjoyable read.

I can't believe whose story this is...

One of the most romantic by Ms Viehl. I'm not sure I bought the love, but the story was satisfying as usual.

You know when you go to the fair or the circus and you watch jugglers? Only they aren't just your run of the mill jugglers throwing up three weenie little balls. These guys are juggling nine balls, six clubs and three flaming knives. Blindfolded.

That is what reading this book was like. As we delve deeper into this series there are so many characters, so many side plots, so many story developments that come at you blind it is like watching that juggler. It could get messy, it could all go out of wack and everything could fall down in a second. But while it is happening, there is a control, and elegance and mastery of it all.

In this installment the main character is Lilah a Kyndred whose special power is to talk to animals. She is kidnapped and thrown into the back of a freezer truck and handcuffed to a cadaver so she won't escape. But that cadaver isn't really dead. He is a Mysterious Guy that Lilah can somehow mind-meld with.

They manage to escape, natch, but they do it while up in a remote mountain town that is very isolated and the townspeople have a big secret.

This is most definitely not a starting point for new readers to the series. There are too many returning characters and continuing plots from the previous Darkyn/Kyndred books that a new reader would be a bit confused. Even a continuing reader has to pay attention to unravel all the tangled plot threads going on here.

As in the previous books, the Kyndred who have created a secret network via Jessa & Samuel are briefly mentioned. Samuel himself is heavily involved in this book and we learn more about his abilities and the true price being exacted for them. It is Nicola and Gabriel's turn to appear in a Kyndred book. I loved them in their book Night Lost, but Nicola seemed really abrasive here.

The romance between Lilah and Mysterious Guy was quick and sexy. But it does take a back seat to all the stuff going on around them. Who is Mysterious Guy really? Who kidnapped Lilah? Who is the woman who seduced the town's sheriff and then disappeared? Why is Samuel trying so hard to discover Lilah's real identity? And what is up with that town?

I only gave this three stars because while I enjoyed reading it, it did feel a little messy and all over the place. Maybe we could have stuck with just the flaming knives and left the balls and clubs out of it? Flaming knife juggling is really exciting all by itself. There were a couple of side excursions I thought were just plot bloat. For instance, there is a point when Lilah has to snowshoe up a mountain to chase Mysterious Guy to tell him she loves him. That scene could have been cut and we would not have missed it one bit.

And again I am tickled about how much of a dud Gennaro is as the series bogeyman. Poor guy, he's such a megalomaniac with visions of world dominance and he is being bamboozled by pretty much everyone. I did love the little side plot that involved his assistant, though. Nice tie in to the whole Darkyn universe.

I did enjoy this, just a tick less than the previous two in the series. Looking forward to reading Samuel's story next.

The heroine, surviving the experiments done on her as a child, lives her life on the run. But's she's been found. Drugged and kidnapped by two men who put her naked body in the back of a U-Haul van, the heroine must find a way her escape. She has help.

The hero, also drugged, also kidnapped and also naked is right there beside her. Suicidal after his experiences in the war, he's lost the will to live but he must live to see the woman beside him safe. Together they form an instant and powerful bond. The hero soon realizes that he's experienced the labs as well and has come away with a mental instability that comes in the form of uncontrollable and vicious blackout periods of rage. But he's also got the power to control ice. As the drugs begin to wear off, they manage to escape their prison and escape into the woods. There they encounter another threat in the form of werewolves and sketchy town forks.

I really like this book up until the point they escape from the van. I found they connection to be great and the bond that forms between them lovely and so sweet. The hero I loved- tortured and angsty as he was. I loved the heroine who was cool and calm and full of patience and understanding for the wounded creature he is. BUT, I found the second half of this book to be a cluster fuck.

This author has the habit of jam packing sooo many different plot twists and points of views and timelines into a book with only 300 some odd pages. It results in a whirlwind of everything happening at once but me not really caring about any of it. The romance between the two characters-though starting out strong- was totally unbelievable and lacked any such evolution. They fell madly in love in just 3 days. And most of that time was spent drugged up or running through the woods. And the hero turned into that typical 'I'm too damaged for you' guy who honestly can't tell that the heroine orgasms mean that you didn't rape her. God, I love tortured heroes' but only when they have a damn reason to be tortured. I don't know, I just find it hard to connect with any stories written by this author. I rated it higher than a one star only based on the fact that I really liked the start of this book. The fact that it went downhill so steeply and so quickly was a real disappointment.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy

FROSTFIRE is not my first Viehl novel (and it certainly won’t be my last). She writes just about every genre around under various pen names. Oddly, this is my first paranormal from her.

If you skim through the reviews for FROSTFIRE, one word keeps reappearing: Confusing. And yes, there is a lot going on in this book that never quite clicked including several shady organizations, a huge cast of characters who cross over from both the Kyndred and Darkyn series—most of whom have different abilities (vampires, werewolves, and all sorts of physics), and then there are three different couples: Nicola and Gabriel, a Sheriff and his one night stand, and the main protagonists Lilah and Walker.

I think I would have preferred reading about each couple separately. Jumping from couple to couple every other chapter really cut the romantic tension. The relationship that suffered the most was unfortunately the main couple. They had a fantastic setup when they first met: handcuffed together naked in the back of a refrigerated truck (they literally melt the ice!). But after that, it was mere hours later before Lilah was basically composing love sonnets for Walker. I’m totally fine with extreme situations triggering extremely quick emotions, but this had to be some kind of record.

Confusingly complex plotlines and lighting fast romance aside, Viehl has written another fast paced, action packed story with plenty of scorching hot scenes and bad guys you really want to sink your teeth into. Don’t worry about jumping into this series midway, as each book features mostly new characters. NIGHSHINE is the next Kyndred book and will be released later in 2011.

Only suitable for adults, very explicit sexual content.

3rd book of the Kyndred series, and if you read the previous books and the books from the Darkyn series where this one is derived from, you know that her writing grabs you and will not release you until the end. As with all her books, surprises, suspense and the unexpected is never lacking; her stories are unpredictable, you might think you know where she is heading, but you’ll soon find out that it is very different of what you expected.

Lilah is been avoiding exposure ever since she found out about her ability to control animal minds. She knew that, if it went public GenHance, (a company that experiments with DNA from special humans like her) would find her and convert her into a guinea pig. One day, after answering a call at the Animal Rescue, to save a kid from a bear, she is caught on camera and instantly becomes a target. They find her and are able drug her, capture and handcuff her to a stranger in the back of a refrigerated truck. Walker, the stranger, she is attached to is different as well. Trying to escape they find out that when they are together amazing things can happen. They finally get away from their kidnappers, and the town they find themselves in, is full of secrets as well.

You will find answers to questions, more questions and a lot of hidden secrets along the story. I found myself backtracking to re-read some parts to make sure it was what I actually understood. You will not be disappointed with this installment of the series and I highly recommend the whole series.

As one of the genetically enhanced Kyndred, Lilah can read and control the minds of animals. Rescuing a group of kids from a wayward bear brings her to the attention of GenHance, the shadowy biotech company willing to murder to acquire super-human DNA. After being drugged and abducted, Lilah wakes up handcuffed to a half-dead man in a refrigerated truck.

Walker, a soldier critically wounded in Afghanistan, is brought back to life by Lilah's warmth and determination, and resolves to do anything he can to free and protect her. But as the two struggle to escape their grim fate, they stumble upon a remote town hiding a dark secret, and learn that Lilah is also being hunted by someone she never expected to fear: a Kyndred friend.

****
I loved the Darkyn series, but I have had trouble falling in love with the Kyndred series. I spent most of this book going huh?? Never really sure exactly what was going on. It seemed as though there were several separate stories going on with unclear ties to each other. Walker and Lilah are a great couple, struggling with their tragic lives, only to find each other and find the other half of their soul. Most of the questions and huh moments were pulled together at the end. I still want to know more about the "people" of Frenchman's Pass and how they will tie in with the series. But all in all, I liked the book. I'm glad I didn't give up on the series

OK, I liked it, but then again I didn't. I love the stories of the Kyn and Darkyn Viehl has written previously, but this one didn't come up to scratch. There was a mixture of old and new characters; a bit of scheming and underhand dealings; a lot of secrets; the occasional bloodshed, and a 'feel-sorry-for-him' dark hero in Walker. Enough elements to make a ripping good story. So where did it fail?

IMHO the story never flowed - principally because it was broken up into bits and pieces depending on who was the MC in that part; there was also a lot of back story, intended to explain things, but only confused me more when reading the current-day bits. Lilah is a case in point, and I was more than half-way through the book before I realised who she COULD be. Nothing could have prepared me for the ending where Walker's real character is revealed - there was no hint anywhere (and he'd only been a minor character in previous books!).

There were several loose ends I would have liked to be cleared up: especially, why did Mr Hunter (the stable manager) 'save' Elle and how did he do it; and why did Lilah's blood affect Samuel in the way it did; and why did Lori/Valori return, and who does she actually work for;and why did NO-ONE know about Ethan, Nathan, Paul et al in Frenchman's Pass?. See? Lots of problems.

Although disappointed, this is not going to stop me from reading anymore Darkyn novels, they're usually a very good read!!

"Frostfire" by Lynn Viehl. Book 3 in the Kyndred series.

LOVED this book about Lilah and Walker!! Absolute favourite so far! The main reason I loved it so much was because questions get answered that I had at the end of the Darkyn series. I was left hanging and now FINALLY I got the answers! Loved it.

Lilah is a Kyndred with the power to control animals with her mind. But when she's kidnapped and placed in the back of a truck with an unconscious man, she finds out she can read his mind...sort of. Her powers usually only work with animals but this man may be more than he seems.

Walker doesn't understand the primal attraction he has to the woman he is handcuffed to. All he knows is that they have to escape and he has to protect her. His icy coldness is matched by her stunning warmth and he craves it. He won't let her get away.

I enjoyed all the different characters in this book. Ms. Viehl has a way of sucking you into the story with all the twists and turns in the plot. There is also a lot of play with names (ie: a character having more than one name) but in this book it wasn't as prevalent as in other her other books. The romantic element between Walker and Lilah was steaming off the pages! And the ending of the book?!?!? I literally gasped "F@&* off!!" Yes, this is a good thing! You have to have read the Darkyn series to understand the ending.

Loved it! Can't wait to start the next one!

While I enjoyed this and couldn’t put it down, at first it had too many bits and pieces of loose ends swirling around the storyline, making it hard to get into. The flash backs didn’t help as they came at odd times.

There are so many different storylines going on here: Elle & Huntley, Lilah & Walker, Gabriel & Nick, Samuel Taske, the citizens of Frenchman’s Pass (who would make a great spin-off hint hint) and the bad guys: Kirchener & Genaro. There’s even multiple years and locations so you’re jumping all over the place.

I really started to enjoy it when they began to blend together. And I’m glad Nick and Gabriel are prominent. Nick is so down-to-earth and they make a great team. Each book seems to have a different couple from the original series join into the current storyline. But even after finishing it, I still have some of the characters confused (Tina and Valori and Tomaseo) and what’s going to happen to the real Walker?

Quick Thoughts: 1)How in the world did werewolves get into what has so far been a vampire only series? Not that I mind, but it’s a surprise. Are the vampires from Europe and the werewolves from America? And now they are meeting up?

2)I’m not sure I like Samuel. I understand his motives but not the way he handles things. We’ll learn more next book.

Fave Scenes: Lilah & Walker’s escape from the van, Gabriel using his spiders, Lilah & Walker having breakfast and Lilah’s guardians.

"Frostfire" is the third book in the Kyndred series, which is an offshoot of Ms. Viehl's earlier Darkyn series. I should note that I received an ARC of this book for free from the author.

This book is my second favorite so far (I liked the second book the best). The story takes a while to get started, but when it does it rocks. It centers around Lilah, a Kyndred who can talk to animals, and Walker, a mysterious man who, like Lilah, has been kidnapped by unknown persons. They manage to escape their captors and find themselves stranded in a small town in the middle of nowhere that contains its own deadly secrets. Throw in some characters from previous Kyndred novels and Darkyn novels, and it's a great ride.

In particular, I love that Lilah had a backbone and didn't always wait for someone to come rescue her. Walker was protective, but Lilah stood up to him. I like strong female characters like this.

While I enjoyed this book immensely - and I have a review of the next book "Nightshine" coming up - I don't recommend anyone new to the series start with this book. New readers would be lost because of the references to things that have happened in the past and the inclusion of the Darkyn characters. New readers should start with "Shadowlight" (Kyndred #1) and then "Dreamveil" (Kyndred #2).

So I really like this series, which is why it pains me to say this. This one was disappointing. It was confusing as hell and I'm not sure it really made sense. At the very least, I didn't connect with it. Does that mean I'm going to stop reading this series? Hell no. Might I take a short break? Fuck yes. But you can rest assured I will continue reading Lynn Viehl's work and hope this doesn't happen again.

I would really like for there to be some kind of indication as to who is speaking in this book. It was really confusing to know whose point of view we were in - and sometimes when it even was. I get that she's trying to keep it mysterious - but there is a fine line between mysterious and just plain annoying. This one hit annoying for me.

The characters were good I suppose. Although, I didn't really believe this romance. Or what happened with the sheriff. Not that I believe in vampires or shape shifters! Just that, on an emotional level, I found the connections improbable.

I guess that's enough bitching. Here's hoping for improvement with the next book!

I normally like Lynn Viehl's books. But this book was a let down. I was so confused as Lilah was a human? Or what was she, I finally figure out that she is a Kyndred. She is kidnapped for her DNA and thrown in a refrigerated truck with a dead corpse, only the corpse is not dead. He is a soldier Walker Kimbal who was crtically wounded in Afghanistan and sold to the scum who have Lilah for harvesting body parts and doing experiments. When Lilah finds out he is not dead they decide to escape. When the do finally escape the do so in a town where so weird crap happens like animals that eat humans. Thank goodness that Lilah has a gift of communicating with animals.

At the very end of the book I find out that Walker is not Walker but a Darkyn that I have been waiting for his book. Needless to say I was disappointed that this story went by without me knowing his identity. So I am giving this book 2 stars.

This book was one bit of drama to the next. It made for a fast, can't put it down read though.
I had some trouble with a few of the scenarios. Like the two vampires who stop in the middle of a crime scene to jig. After a few hundred years together they can't wait to get out of an active crime scene? While they were having sex they go from standing doggy to some type of missionary position. The way it was worded I couldn't stop picturing the woman laying on her back with all fours up in the air like she was waiting on belly scritches.
I also had a bit of trouble understanding the how main love story happened and why everyone was so attracted to the main character other than she was a big boobied redhead. Well, I guess I didn't have that much trouble with the concept.
It was a good time taker upper, but I've removed the rest of the books from this series from my list to read because it was mostly fast moving drama and not my thing. Four stars because I finished it in a week.

I really like Viehl's writing overall. She builds suspense well, and her characters are very well rounded. That said, the heroine Lilah was a little too milk-toast for me, and she and the hero just sort of fell in love without any real relationship development. Also, several characters had multiple names/aliases and this combined with some deliberately vague scenes (meant to build suspense) and constant jumping around between the various side-plots made for a confusing narrative. I'm a pretty intelligent person (I think), and there were several places where I was quite confused as to what the heck was going on and to whom the heck it was happening to. I loved the darkyn series, and I like the kyndred spin off enough, but this was not my favorite of either series. It's probably a fluke, so I will definitely continue with the series in the future.

While I normally Love all of Lynn Viehl’s book this one for me was just not up to par. There were some parts that fell pushed like she said he everyone else has shifters so now I should too. No you shouldn’t have the story was perfect just the way it was with Vampires and genetically altered humans. I think she should have stuck to what the story already was instead of throwing a loop in and taking the series in an entirely different way. I didn’t totally hate it I just don’t think it was as good as her other books she deviated from what she knew and it just wasn’t as good as it could have been. Plus she never really explained all of it unless I missed something at the end of the last Darkyn book. I wish she would go back to doing the Darkyn books or weave them more into this series. Until then I'll keep reading and hope the next one meets my expectations.

Well I definitely didn't guess this twist. This is my favorite Kyndred book, so far.

I liked both main characters, Lilah & Walker. She talks to animals. He's a colossally buff dead-ish marine that GenHance has tinkered with.

Cool twisty mystery with the town. But again, I feel like so much wasn't explained. Like what's embedded in Walker's tattoo, how'd he go from being A to B. where's the explanation on that? And how about talking about that cougar attack on Lilah, how'd it happen in California?

These books make me feel like I'm watching the third X-men movie without having seen the previous two. So I've got no idea why Logan sprouts metal claws & won't die. That's what these books do to my comprehension.

Can't Dr. Alex pop up to do a DNA test & tell us how they were mutated? I'd like more answers than "it was done in a lab."

First of all I must say that this series isn't nearly as good as the Darkyn series. Those books were spectacular while these are too damn confusing to be truly enjoyable.

Like this first two in the series, the format of the story is irritating and confusing. The introduction of innumerable characters with no connection to the main characters. Heck I couldn't even figure out who the main characters were for almost 100 pages! That is just unacceptable. The story finally started coming together and making sense about halfway through. But up until that point, I didn't know what the heck was going on.

I have book four, Samual Taske's story, so I will continue but I sincerely hope this is the final book in the series because I truly don't think I can take anymore.

One of the best Lynn Viehl books yet! As normal the author shows us seperate scenes and characters not really giving us the whole story but letting the reader make their own assumptions. If you're and avid follower of the Kyndred and the Darkyn, you will adore how they come together here along with a little new twist we've never seen before. SPOILER(Is everyone trying to bring the vampire and werewolf combo in to their books now? Don't get me wrong, it def works for Laurell K. Hamilton and every teen's favorite Twilight series but really? Come on Viehl, why succub to the fad???)

Anyhow, as always, Viehl brings a wonderful story together and leaves us wanting more...of Samuel's story! Can't wait for Nightshine!!!!
