Midnight Omen, The Déjà vu Chronicles Five stars from me There’s a very evocative sailing ship on the front cover and I’m drawn to books like that. When you read the blurb, however, it begins by telling you about a nurse in an emergency room, which seems to put the story in the modern age. So how does Marti Melville put those two time frames together? The answer is: Skilfully. Our heroine, Katherine, has enough of Life’s traumas to occupy her in the ER, but then she is taken on a voyage of discovery back to the 18th Century and, amid the hazards of that age, finds out what drove her into nursing in the 21st Century – she has a load of magical gifts, whose origins lie in her Celtic heritage. Well, we’d all like to do our ancestry investigation, but Katherine’s time travel doesn’t allow her much time for reflection because she’s kidnapped by a gang of pirates. The action comes thick and fast and is driven by a masterly writing style. And don’t worry, romance lovers, there’s plenty of that as well. One of the most important requirements of an historical novel is that it gets its facts right. I’ve done extensive research myself on the 18th Century and I was impressed with what came out of Midnight Omen’s pages. It was spot on.
Marti, the Author, is a real sweetheart with a love of adventure and enjoyable characters, and shares this passion with the rest of us with this fun escape. Katherine, a pretty young lass is taken against her will onto a ruthless pirate ship. A fate that would sure to fare badly for any young beauty, but its the cutthroats that end up disarmed as her old world Celtic magic proves to be a protection for her. That, and her knowledge of medicine end up being beneficial for the crew's well being and helpful on their endeavors. But it was more then just magic and skills in medicine that disarms Captain John Phillips, and the feeling is mutual. A feeling that will have to wait at being acted upon in this adventure, as the one experiencing these long ago memories of a past life is reawakend to the present time. Questions to be answered are wanted by Katherine, the main character living this adventure, and draw the reader to the next book in the series.
I was excited to read this book given to me by the author for an honest review. I've always been intrigued by pirates and their superstitious ways and this book has it all. Adventure, growing passion, supernatural and a decent heroine who I liked immediately. It also harks to Wales, my homeland so I was interested in how it would progress. The pirates are pirating and easy to visualise as is captain Phillips who had me very interested!! I wondered at some people and their stories but as it's the first book of a series then I presume they come into their own? Had a problem with timescale days turning into weeks and not seeing the captain or someone else and considered as to whether this is viable but it didn't ruin my reading and found myself grabbing the iPad whenever I could to read the next chapter. Katharine is an ER nurse and has a gift of magic. When she delves into one of her past lives, she finds she was once a teenage girl kidnapped by pirates. She was taken to be the healer on the ship, as they head away from her home in Wales to the Caribbean Sea.
It was ok. I believe it's meant to be a trilogy and I'm not sure if I'll continue or not, but the ending of this one does have me a little curious.
Midnight Omen is a very adventurus Book. It is part 2 of the series. The relationship between Capt. John and Kathrine is very hush hush because of the articles of the shift. Morrigan doing her best to get at Capt.John by sending evil to kill his crew and to do what ever she can do Isolate him from Kathrine. There was alot more action in the first book than in this book so I'm hoping the last book has alot more action in it.
I really enjoyed this first book in Marty's series. I thought I was starting off in the ER in present day and had an adventure in the Caribbean with a pirate and an enchantress. could not put the book down the twists and turns were fabulous. When I was finished I couldn't wait to start the second book in the series. encourage anyone who likes romance, fun, pirates to read on.
This book was written by a friend of mine. It is being made into a movie. It will be a trilogy and book 2 is on the way out. I really thought it was a fun read!
This book was such a ride. I loved how the author explained the details so well, but still allowed my imagination to soar. So happy to hear there are 2 more books. Cant wait to get my hands on them.
I really enjoyed how Marti takes us back in time and tells a great love story. i normally get confused when a Author switches back in forth but not with this book.
I got about halfway through this book, and while I did enjoy reading the current time stuff, the main part of the book is set in the past and for some reason I could not connect with it. I found myself constantly putting this book down or skipping pages hoping something would draw me in further.
I'm sad I wasn't able to really fully read this because I did get this book in a giveaway on goodreads and the author was super sweet but 250ish pages in and still struggling tells me it's time to give up.
Step back into time and into the Caribbean with pirates, witches, and folklore. Marti Melville magically weaves historical 18th-century Caribbean folklore with actual events and real pirates. The possibility of "what if" permeates through this fictional account of Captain John Phillips and his soul mate, Kathryn, a Celtic witch.
Midnight Omen is the first book in The Deja vu Chronicles paranormal, historical romance series by Marti Melville.
From screenwriter and film producer, George L. Heredia (May 2017):
"Just wanted to send Marti Melville some kudos on her book Midnight Omen. Wow. WOW. This is what pirate tales should be about, not that whiney cartooney Jack Sparrow. Seriously, this needs to get made into film. Thanks for an amazing tale. We loved it."
Marti Melville's Deja Vu Chronicles has you on the edge of your seat throughout the whole book. Wonderful getaway from the day to day chaos. Escape to the Caribbean waters where pirates abound. Love this book and it's paranormal elements. Great read.
Definitely 5 stars!!! I could not put this book down. So excited to read more. Suspenseful, thrilling, captivating with a little romance (hoping for more of this, wink wink!) I would definitely recommend this book!
Midnight Omen by Marti Melville took a while for me to truly get involved. There were a few scenes I felt were unnecessary to tell the story, but I still liked it. This is a tale of a girl who was a witch in a past life. As a witch she gave her life to save the life of a pirate Captain she fell in love with. In this life, the curse she’d been faced with back then has returned. She must learn about who she is and what exactly she’s dealing with.
The beginning of the novel flips back and forth between the present and past. Unfortunately it wasn’t until after the main character, Katherine, visits a shaman and undergoes regression to remember her past life that any of it makes sense. By this point, you’re a quarter of the way through the novel. The regression is perhaps the most interesting part of the story. It follows Katherine, then Kathryn, as she and a pirate Captain fall in love. She is kidnapped and initially forced to stay on the Revenge as the new surgeon due to her healing capacity. Soon, she finds one reason to stay aboard, Captain Phillips.
Aboard the Revenge (quite aptly named), Kathryn finds friends, love, and multitudes of enemies. She also discovers more about her gift of “healing” and her abilities as a “witch.” By the end of the story, I was certainly prepared to pick up the next book in the series. I’d love to tell you why, but I don’t want to spoil the surprise. But I can tell you that Katherine wasn’t the only one dreaming of gorgeous pirate Captain Phillips.
