A Sociology of Commercial Flight Crew

Rate this book
"Developing a sociological understanding of front-line staff and of pilots' working environments is an important step to developing a more detailed understanding of this increasingly important sector. This book performs such a function and also adds to our understanding of pilots in general, from those who work for flag carriers to those who fly for regional or corporate jet operators." The readership includes the general public, industry legislators, regulators, managements, employees, trainers, journalists, academics and students of sociology, psychology, organisation theory and business management.

“It is not possible to understand pilots' outlook and behaviour without appreciating their vulnerability. The airline business exists in a state of permanent revolution. The industry's only constant is change.” | For the exact reasoning presented in this quote, studying the ‘social beings’ of airline employees is truly fascinating. This read does a great job taking a numbers-based industry and personifying it through the lens of pilots. If you’re a commercial aviation employee or enthusiast, you’ll like this book. If you’re a sociologists, you’ll enjoy this book. And, if you happen to be a former flight attendant turned sociology lecturer (like myself,) you’ll love this book dearly! My appreciation to Dr. Bennett for studying this niche of a niche!
