Crime and grime are everywhere, at least in Maggie Phillips' opinion. Deep in the throes of a New England winter, Maggie's still adjusting to her new role as confidential informant for the Hudson Police Department. When a suspicious fax is sent to one of her new clients, Maggie is sure she's unearthed a conspiracy. With no crime to investigate, however, the Hudson P.D. can do nothing—that is until a wealthy trophy wife disappears and the FBI is called in to the hunt.

On the home front, her twelve-year-old son is growing up way too fast, while her brother is back with a few surprises destined to wreak havoc on the household. To frost the whole crappy cake, her best friend's marriage is falling apart, which leaves Maggie worrying over her own. All of the family drama is put into perspective, however, when Maggie is arrested for kidnapping and blackmail.

Between economic woes and a now tarnished reputation, Maggie is in way over her head. Yet out of the ashes of frustration and failure, something great might emerge. If she survives the birthing process that is...

Maggie is cleaning lady with an elite clientele. She's also a police informant and feeds information on criminal behavior amongst the upper echelons of Hudson. When she stumbles upon a threatening note on a clients fax machine she immediately storms the police station with her tip. Unfortunately she's jumped the gun and the police dismiss her tip...but she knows something is hokey.

When the lady of the house disappears, apparently kidnapped, she finds herself on the suspect list and with the police looking her way, it's up to her to clear her name and catch the culprit.

I read a lot of this type of book. Quirky mysteries with a female sleuth. There are certain things I see a lot, things that drive me crazy. It really bugs me when the heroine needs to be saved by the hero. It really bugs me when the heroine should be a Darwin award recipient because the decisions they make are so completely stupid. It bugs me when the hero treats the heroine like a child.

There's none of that in here. It's a book about a smart, snarky and confident woman who just happens to stumble into crimes and does a pretty good job of solving them and entertaining me. Jennifer L. Hart is good for my sanity, her characters definitely don't make me crazy...for that I thank her.

A free Kindle download, lightweight mystery.
Dagnab it. I was willing to overlook the plethora of typos and grammatical errors because it was a free book. I even forgave the mysterious statement that the protagonist sat on the couch with her feet tucked under her knees. Unless her legs bend backwards, I don't see how that could happen. Well, maybe she was sitting cross-legged, Indian-style; nevertheless, it needed more explanation if that was true. I was ready to give this book an "okay" rating until I got almost to the end and was told that the heroine stepped out of an elevator and since she was rummaging in her purse, didn't notice she was in the basement until her boot heels clicked on the concrete. Then a few pages later, the reader was told that her sneakers didn't make any noise as she crept towards the killer on the concrete floor. That trashed Ms. Hart's rating in my book. Poor editing wasn't responsible for that!

The second book in the Laundry Hag series, I enjoyed this one but didn't love it like I did the first, which was a bit disappointing.

Having survived her ordeal with a corrupt cop in the first book, Maggie Phillips is still cleaning houses for the elite and is still working as a CI for the police department and an overzealous one at that as she wants to solve cases, not just provide helpful information in regards to them. Working at one client's she "discovers" a mysterious fax which the police dismiss until the wife of the recipient disappears and Maggie suddenly finds herself having to prove she wasn't behind it. And if that wasn't enough, her brother Marty has reappeared, this time with a pregnant girlfriend in tow, her best friend's marriage is over and her own marriage seems to be on the rocks as well - mostly due to Maggie's own paranoia.

This was a quick, entertaining read. It wasn't quite as humorous as the first one but the characters felt more real: Sylvia's reaction to her cheating husband and Neil's reaction to Maggie being targeted and framed being among the best. I can't really find anything I would say was a huge fault with it (other than it definitely could have used a second set of editing eyes); the bar was set pretty high for me with the first one and even knowing sophomore efforts rarely measure up, I think my expectations were just too high. That said, I am looking forward to seeing what scrapes Maggie gets into next!

Sometimes you just have to let of steam - literally

Loved it. I got this in the box set that doesn't appear to be available now.
Maggie is back! One of her new jobs gives her plenty to think about. Strange faxes, dead birds and then a disappearing wife. As a CI she didn't expect to be arrested for blackmail or kidnapping but life happens. Now she has to clear her name. Plus her bFF's marriage has broken apart, her brother is back and her own marriage looks dicey. Murder, arson, blackmail and kidnapping shadow her as she tries to get to the bottom of who did what. Will she find the culprit or is she going to be one of the victims?
If you enjoy Colleen Helme's work you are going to love this.

This is book 2 in Hart's The Misadventures of the Laundry Hag and is another perfect cozy mystery. I am just in love with Maggie Phillips and her group of family and friends. What a group! The narration is perfect I love the southern-isms that come thru, being a southern gal myself it makes this read / listen all the more wonderful to read / listen. Hart does a great job of keeping us readers on our toes with twists and turns and suspects your just sure of...until your not! You won't see the who done it til the Hart wants you to. Maggie and Neil are a beautiful couple and I can't wait to see what troubles Maggie will find herself in next!

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Fun and Funny!

I just have to say that this series is so much fun to read. I get such a kick out of these characters I really do. When I first started this I really wasn't sure what kind of style it was going to be but once I began reading I was hooked. Maggie is a housewife who likes to clean and eventually ends up starting a cleaning business, from which chaos ensues. I have to give major props for Jennifer Hart, thank you Ms. Hart for sharing your talent and heart with us, it is very much appreciated by myself for sure. I would highly recommend this series to anyone of reading age. I'm now heading on to book #3.

This book was awful. It seems to have been written by another person. The style was so different, yet, the author teied to capture the easence of the first story. Didn't make it. So many characters to keep up with, when the person who did it was identified. I had to go back and figure out who it was. The language!!! Why use gratuitous f bombs in writing? They add NOTHING to the story and their use was so out of character for all of the original characters. I will not be continuing this series.

The shenanigans continue with he laundry hag and her nosy self. This book is full of sarcasm, blunders and miscommunication that’s cause wild disarray in the house! Her brother Marty shows up with pregnant girl friend in tow, her best friends life changing revelation and some one new trying to get her sent to the big house make for humorous calamity! It’s a fun read to be enjoyed. I don’t agree with all her thoughts but I am enjoying the ride of crazy.

Swept Under the Rug

Seems like this is too be funny, but doesn’t get it done. Also written to be a mystery. . . somewhat does the job. Took me well into the story to get interested. Therefore, it took forever to finish reading. The writing style should have made it a quick read. Just not that interesting to me.

Audiobook Review.

Entertaining Mystery.

The story is nice, even if it contains some unbelievable events and the language and sex make this a hard boiled mystery at times. Jennifer Hart knows how to push the buttons to get a reaction from her readers, and that is one of the strong points of her work.
I found the performance a bit underwhelming, confusing at times where voices were mixed up.

Laundry Hag Review

If it wasn't for bad luck Uncle Scrooge (The Laundry Hag) would have no luck at all. It was a great story, it kept me in suspense. I am looking forward to book 3.

Good mystery and fun to read to try to solve. Main character makes the whole story. Supporting characters fun to get to know. Quick read.

Book 2

A little slow at the beginning, ok by the end. Less funny, than book 1. An ok story, not as clever or original. I will move on to book 3. I hope it is better.

This was back to the quality of "Skeletons in the Closet". I am really happy that I didn't let "Who Needs a Hero" convince me to skip this one. I think I liked this one even more than the first one. The emotions in this one felt a lot more raw. While it still had a lot of humor, I think the story pulled you through a lot more. I really liked the up and down movement of the main characters relationship with her husband and friends.

I recommend that if you want to read these, just skip over Who Needs a Hero. You don't really miss anything by not reading it, and the other two are so much better!

I listened to the Audible version of this.Suzanne Ceretta does a great job narrating this farce.Maggie is an undercover cleaning lady. She cleans houses and listens to the dirty deeds of her employers for the local police. In this story she sees a suspicious fax and comes to a conclusion that her employers are in trouble. As usual she's not taken seriously and is even considered a suspect at times.Add marital issues to it and it's a confusing time all around. It's funny,it's gruesome and it's a must read!

Different but funny and thought provoking misadventures

Different but funny and thought provoking misadventures

Slow to start, almost stopped reading then the action picked up. Enough laugh out loud moments and learning to deal with real life bumps provided to keep a reader wondering what will happen next. Love and caring for family and friends gives this story depth. The positive interaction leaves you feeling good. The murder and mayhem are wild at times and unrealistic enough to be interesting. A good clean light story for a rainy afternoon.

Witty Mystery

I love the series thus far and have even taken to using some of the laundry hags witty quips. The series is fresh, exciting, filled with "who done it" that changes every chapter. Trust me as a person who reads the plot on the description and figures out everything, this is a nice change of chasing the rabbit.

Dialog vs description is perfect, no ongoing fillers of past book or about this book. Grammar and spelling are edited perfectly. Can be read as a stand alone...but you'll want more.

The audio books will bring the characters to life, read along.

I am enjoying this series. Unusually, let me give you the low points first. Maggy's constant reference to her husband being a former SEAL can irritate but there is a good reason why she does it. More would be a spoiler, so I'll move on. The plot is not always realistic.

However, the book is good fun and cuss-free. I'm putting my fantasy book on hold and going straight to the third one in the series

Adventures of Maggie. Mom, part-time cleaning lady, part-time CI for the local police department. Cleaning other people's houses gets Maggie into some serious trouble that involves the Feds. If that wasn't enough to deal with, her best friend's marriage is crumbling, causing her to worry about the state of her own marriage. She and Neil see a therapist to work on their communication problems, which actually helps her solve the case.
