Inspired by a picture in the nursery rhyme book left on the barn floor, Mrs. Mooley, the cow, is determined to jump over the moon, despite the ridicule of the other barnyard animals.
John Wellington "Jack" Kent (1920 – 1985) was an American cartoonist and prolific author-illustrator of children's books. He is perhaps best known as the creator of the comic strip King Aroo. In addition to his own books, he illustrated more than twenty books by other authors.
Mrs. Mooley by Jack Kent- Children’s Illustrated Colour Picture Book- The book narrates the story of farm house where his pet animals reside in the barnyard. Mrs. Mooley is the name of the cow. Here friends Dog, Cat, Pig, Cock & hens, frog also reside with her. Farmer’s children have left an old Mother Goose Rhymes book in the barn. One day, Mrs. Mooley sees a picture of a cow jumping over the moon in a book of Mother Goose rhymes. Mrs. Mooley decides that she will jump on the moon. This information becomes talk of the barn. Pig, Cock, hen, frog realise this would a fantastic incident to watch. Mrs. Mooley practices first. In the night, Mrs. Mooley jumps and falls down. Her onlookers are happy. After the fall, Mrs. Molley is weak and she wakes up in the morning. Mrs. Mooley has recovered and now she is determined to jump at the sun. Coloured pictures help the reader to relate to the story. I have read the Hindi language translation of this book.
"All it takes is determination and a little practice," becomes Mrs. Mooley's mantra when the udder-ly determined bovine, inspired by a picture in a nursery rhyme book, decides that she will jump over the moon....then the sun...and possibly the planets....
Jack Kent's humorous illustrations add to the fun!
Cute book that explains how the cow jumped over the moon. This book could be read for an intro into the phases of the moon for a science lesson. Determination is the underlying theme here, and even if the cow couldn't technically jump over the moon, she never stopped thinking that she could. The barn yard animals could provide a lesson for cliques and even bullying, no of them ever believed that the cow could jump the moon, and even would laugh at her. My kids, including myself, love this book. Helps that I also make all the funny noises when I read it to them.
