I read this book over spring break and it really got me pumped up for summer. This book made me decide that I want to go to a summer camp and I've started looking into some options. I really loved the situation the author put our main character in. Younger sister, not really that outgoing, and even though I'm nothing like her, I can seriously relate to some of the problems she had at her camp. For example, in the book when the main character, Jordan, decides that she's gonna jump a horse, I had that same feeling at the first ever summer camp I went to. The only difference was that I was going to be barrel racing, not jumping. I love how thoroughly the author describes the camp as if we've been there before, since Jordan had been there before. I also really enjoyed how the author incorporated a dance with guys into the book, just to add a little more excitement here and there. My by far favorite part of this book though was right at the beginning, when right before they leave, Jordan throws up....

Fearless, like the other books in the series, has a good summer camp setting, and I like that Jordan's character is a bit better developed than some of the other MCs in this series. Not sure I agree with her definition of "fearless", though.

I was so sure I was reading these in order, but apparently, I have Fearless and Tug of War switched around. It doesn't really matter, since each book is self-contained, with only a few references to events of the other books, but I thought I'd mention it in the interest of full disclosure.

In this book, we meet Jordan, a second-year camper whose mother is good friends with Eda, the camp director. (She lives on the other side of the bunk shared by Kelly, Reb, and Jennifer in Pranked.) Jordan comes to camp with her older sister, Madison, who is a CAT (Counselor's Assistant in Training), and her best friend, Molly. She also comes up with a slight reputation. Jordan is known for being afraid of practically everything. A few years back, she refused to come to camp at all, and last year, her family likes to say, she barely survived. As she gets ready to leave for camp this year, her mother, stepfather, and sister all tease her about whether she will get nervous and throw up.

At camp, though, Jordan starts to wish she could change. Not only does she want to perform a jump on horseback by the end of the summer, she also wants to perform on stage in front of everyone in preparation for possibly acting in a play when she gets back home. But Jordan is her own worst enemy, and she psychs herself out at every turn. Molly, who is a Titanic fanatic, keeps likening Jordan's fears to those experienced by Titanic travelers, saying that Jordan would have died because she would have been too afraid to jump into a lifeboat. The analogy is annoying, and Jordan gets sick of it pretty quickly, but she does have to wonder - will she ever overcome the fears that keep her on the sidelines, or will she find the guts to become fearless before the summer ends?

Once again, Katy Grant really impressed me with her knowledge of tween psychology. I shared many of Jordan's fears when I was attending day camp, and I find myself wishing, even now, that I'd had the guts to overcome more of them. Grant really lets the reader feel Jordan's anxiety about jumping with her horse, asking boys to dance, and performing in front of large groups, and she doesn't allow Jordan to overcome it easily, either. Even when she decides she absolutely doesn't want to be afraid anymore, Jordan has to get past the little voice in her head that keeps her from taking risks.

For girls who are naturally adventurous, this book will give a good insight into what it's like to be scared, and for girls who have felt these fears, it will help them see that they're not alone, and that there is a way to overcome being afraid. It's also a good choice for horse lovers, since there is a lot of horseback riding in this story, and a lot of lovable horses.

12 year old Jordan is both excited and nervous to return to Camp Pine Haven. Because she has a nervous stomach and her 16 year old sister is ,'perfect' Jordan decides to announce that she will jump horses at Pine Haven. She instantly regrets her decision. Jordan also wants to ask a boy to dance with her and perform onstage, but again constantly battles her nerves. This is a fun summer camp story that has a positive message of facing your fears. Part of the Summer Camp Secrets series.
