Another great installment to the series.

Vol. 13 starts by wrapping up the incident in the previous book, delivering a conclusion to Julius and Barbara's story, before Mia returns to Tearmoon for summer break. This year, she brings some of the SEEC program children home to figure out why Patricia was sent to the future. That question remains unanswered for now though, as this book is still setting up the plot for the upcoming climax. There are new characters introduced, as well as a new conflict that will have to be settled in a horsemanship contest. Can't have a Tearmoon Empire book without horses, you know.

This volume is also hinting that Ruby's romance with Vanos might see some progress soon, as well as giving Keithwood a potential future partner. It's been a while since we saw Ruby after all. Keithwood's focus had always been on Sion, but Sion has resolved his own issues a few books ago so they finally have room to breathe now. Not gonna lie, I actually really enjoy seeing all the side characters finding their own romance. Especially since Mia and most of her friends have been nicely paired off with each other.

Oh, and while this is shown in a really subtle way… this book proves that Bel, after receiving a better life and education in the future, has also become more clever overall. She can read the room and think for herself much better than she used to. Even if she's still struggling with her academic grades, at least she no longer has to spend the whole summer at school due to bombing her exams. Baby steps, but it's still character growth.

My only complaint is that while the overall translation quality has improved from vol. 12, there are still a few mistakes and typos. They're not that bad, but it'd still make you wonder how they got past QC. Mistaking the word "wary" for "weary" should be something basic, and yet it happened twice in a single chapter. Hopefully this will be improved in the next book. As always, if you need proofreaders you can always hire me!

The story from last volume concludes in a pretty satisfactory way, then Ruby returns with romantic woes. A nice, low-stakes volume. And yet, I didn't find it really satisfactory.

The author doesn't seem to know what to do with Mia all of a sudden. In the first volume, Mia, an absolutely worthless aristocrat who was guillotined but somehow traveled back in time at the moment of her death, had to try to prevent the conditions that led to her execution. So her retainers thought she was being virtuous and saintly, when the reader knows she's being completely self-centered. But it felt like her character was developing over the course of story, right? She ultimately cared about her friends, even if she initially courted them for cynical reasons. Here we're suddenly back to Volume 1 Mia. In reference to some kids she's looking after, "I know for sure that Miss Rafina would get mad at me if they returned to Saint Noel emaciated!" Is the implication that she'd be fine with the kids starving if she weren't afraid of Rafina? Definitely not--a few pages later, she has a clearly genuine conversation with one of them. But then how are we supposed to be taking these constant asides telling us how venal and selfish Mia is secretly being? The Volume 1 jokes don't work with the Volume 14 character.

In other ways, this volume is simply tired. It's not especially funny that Mia can't cook, and I don't want to read another horse-racing arc, which we're now being threatened with.

Also, I don't know if these volumes are genuinely uneven in terms of typos, or if I just sometimes notice it more depending on my mood, but after what struck me as a basically functional translation last volume, this is pretty messy, with frequent ungrammatical phases ("Sir Ludwig has dispatched us with civil officials." No, he dispatched the civil officials to you.) and incorrect word choices ("weary of him" when it should be "wary of him").

A fun installment in a favorite series. While this isn't quite as good as some of the other volumes, it was still an enjoyable read, with lots of horses, cute romance, and some lurking trouble to come. 3.75 stars, rounded up.
