More than a simple biography, this book examines the times Francis lived in and how that influenced the development of his philosophy. It is readable and informative. I highly recommend not putting the book down after the final chapter, but please read the Epilogue as well for a thoughtful analysis of how Francis's role as a person of tremendous impact was a result of the times he lived in. The author suggests we cannot recreate the original Franciscan ideal of worldwide brotherhood, but rather we need someone in our time to step forward with potential life- and world-changing ideas.

Gives great context to the Life and Spirit of the worlds most popular saint! It goes beyond Francis as the Icon of Environmenatlists and the "green" movement as well as Catholic conservatives who see him as a loyal son of the church at any cost. This book will force the reader to re-examine everything they assumed about Francis. HE IS LARGER THAN ALL OF OUR IDEAS and IDEALS!
