It was not the getaway she'd planned

Emily Musgrave fled Spain with her young nephew, running from the boy's possessive uncle -- business tycoon Alex Gomez. Help came from a heroic stranger -- Sandy "call me Mac" MacPherson who claimed devastating kisses as his reward and refused to leave her side as she crossed Europe searching for refuge.

It was as if they were characters embroiled in the plot of one of Mac's bestselling spy novels. Mac was their savior, and yet Emily instinctively felt he was the wrong man in the wrong place at the wrong time. Something simply didn't ring true about Mac. Except, of course, the way that he kissed....

Re Catch Me If You Can - Anne McAllister tries out a road trip romance with this. The h is the legal guardian of her young nephew, on the run from her sister in law's duplicitous and slime slurping family, who cut off all contact with their daughter seven years earlier when she refused to marry according to her family's wishes and married the h's brother instead.

The h was a model who was engaged to a wealthy guy. When she found out that he only wanted her for a showpiece and was keeping his true love mistress on the side, the h dumped him right before the wedding and went to one of her married artists friends for help.

There was big tabloid scandal, but the h was through with the fashion modeling grind and then she got a letter from her sister in law. The h's brother had died three years previously when his Navy jet went down, leaving his wife and young son behind. Then the h's sister in law became ill with a fatal blood disease.

Since the sis in law's entire family turned against her when she refused to marry the man they wanted her to, (in fact the sister's older brother tried to kidnap her before the wedding and held her unwillingly until she got away,) the h's sister in law requested that the h take over guardianship of her nephew and keep him away from her family.

When the book opens, the h is in Spain with her grieving nephew and the sister in law's brother is closing in. The h knows that the sis in law's family is very wealthy and powerful, she worries that legal guardianship or no, they might be able to either kidnap or take the h's nephew, Tom and so the h decides to run.

The h manages to escape on the train with Tom, but she sees a man she thinks is the Tom stealing Uncle following them, (the h doesn't exactly know what the other family looks like,) and she accosts a stranger to pretend to be with her to put the lurking suspicious guy off the scent.

The stranger the h asks for help turns out to be a famous writer and he 'helps' the h and Tom escape with several roofie kisses and a tiny bit of tart shaming for being a model thrown in. The h is very attracted to her writer H, tho he claims his father is dead and he has to run the family business for his poor invalid mother.

After a week of skipping through Europe together, the H and h declare themselves in love and have a big Pink Passion Lurve Mojo moment. The next morning the h answers the phone and it is someone asking for the H. When the caller gives the H's full name, she finds out the H is her sister in law's older brother and he has been playing her all along.

The h is furious, but she doesn't take Tom and get the next flight out. She lets the H guilt her into taking Tom to see his mother, who suffered a mild heart attack. The next bit is we all go to England, where the H's mother uses her illness and supposed fragility to con the h into staying around and tries to get the h to marry her son, the H.

(AMcA tries to present the H's mother as this sweet old lady who only wants to see her grandson, but srsly, the woman was a viper who would smile sweetly and say "bless your heart" as she slid the stiletto in. She claims that her husband wouldn't let her contact her daughter for seven years, and that her estranged daughter held a mean grudge. But I wasn't buying that, as this woman was really more implacable than a glacier in getting her way.)

So the h is furious and hurt and wondering how she got such lousy taste in men. The H, now that there is no chance for him to get his groove on with the h cause they are staying in the family home, turns into a passive-aggressive beta wimp who can't do what he wants, which is write his best selling novels full time.

The H claims that he has to run the family empire because it is his mother's sole income and it is his responsibility, I totally call bull manure on that. These people were mega-wealthy and the H could easily hire someone to manage things while he kept a general eye on the overall business.

He also has a younger brother who could do things as well. But no, his cotton-mouth viper mother wanted the H to do as his father wanted, even tho the abusive bully has been dead for a while. The H just can't stand up for himself or even find his dangly bits really, his mother has a firm grip on them and she is obviously not going to let them go anytime soon. The woman does her best to manipulate the h too.

The H goes off on some business crisis and Tom is pretty much seduced by the wealthy, whatever he wants lifestyle. The h finds out that the H, who keeps insisting that he loves her for herself and not because he might lose a custody battle, is also wining and dining the longtime family friend wealthy widow next door in London while he is supposedly there handling some business crisis.

The wealthy widow next door is presented as being superficially nice too, but she seems to be warning the h that the H will marry her because his mother considers it his duty to keep Tom around, plus the wealthy widow's young snotty daughter is all about how the H is going to be her new daddy.

So the h gives up. She has money and she wants to go back to college in the U.S., but she has nothing set up yet and clearly Tom will be better off with the H and his viper mother, tho her sister in law specifically said she did not want that to happen.

(The H's mother tries to claim that her daughter was willful. But I suspect the younger woman knew her family much better that the h did and had good reasons for her insistence that the h keep her son away from them. However A McA glosses over the whole thing, which was kinda odd as it is the premise of the book and the h thinks that maybe the sister in law was just hurt by their rejection or something and that Tom will be fine with them.)

The h goes to Wales, to hang with her artists friend and his wife, they are welcoming and she has a mopey moment while she tries to get over losing Tom and the somewhat dubious love of her life.

The H shows up and starts shouting at her when she is walking along the cliff ledge by the sea and for some reason the H thinks she is going to jump and commit suicide. (Which tells you lots about how the women around him manipulate him really.)

The h looks at him like he is insane and explains she was enjoying the sunset. The H is abashed and he tells her that he came to give her a legal document relinquishing any legal rights to Tom, who wants to be with the h.

The h decides that is good enough for her and she loves the H and he promises he loves her back and that his mother will let her borrow his dangly bits for an hour every third Sunday, so the two fade off into the sunset with a happy Tom, who gets to keep his pony for the pretty lackluster HEA.

This one was not my cuppa. The H lies for too long and goes from aggressive gropey hand caveman to Mama's boy whiny beta in one chapter. The mother was as conniving as her dead husband and I just wasn't buying that the woman couldn't go look up her daughter once in seven years or manage to get around her husband if it was that important to her.

I think that really they only cared when there was a next generation heir to mold in the family image and traditions and the H's mother saw yet another way to extend her insidious influence to her archaic wishes of keeping her family to certain "standards".

The wealthy widow next door was not really explained satisfactorily to my tastes either, the H claims his brother is going to pursue her, but I can't help but wonder if that wasn't to the dictates of the cotton-mouth viper mother too.

Needless to say I wasn't feeling the lurve on the this one. But as always, mileage varies and A McA does manage to keep the plot moving along at a fairly quick pace. So one HP voyager's 'not my cuppa' could be another's 'best cuppa chocolate ever' - so don't be afraid to give it a trial for an HPlandia outing.

I love this author's writing style. This one in many ways was a typical HP but I enjoyed it. The heroine is a former model who jilted her groom when she found out he was a cheating douche and came to take care of her nephew and ailing sister in law(SIL). Now, her SIL is dead and she has custody and her SIL's family who rejected her brother and SIL's marriage are trying to make contact. She has heard bad things about them and their money and power, so she runs. She meets the hero who helps them and she falls in love with him. To me who the hero was, was obvious, once the deception is out she starts doubting everything, his offer of marriage, declaration of love, some drama ensues and HEA.

A bit of a silly premise, but it worked surprisingly well. Main characters are likable, though at times rather impetuous. 3.5 stars
