Shimari is a centuries old demon, steeped in knowledge and experience. He has been summoned in ages past to assist great wizards and topple kingdoms. Apprentices do not dare to summon him, and even wise men hesitate. He has seen everything; nothing surprises him... until a young man, practicing magic illegally, summons him by mistake.
note: this story has been expanded and reissued: By Mistake
Megan is a long time resident of queer romance and keeps herself busy reading and writing it. She is often accused of fluff and nonsense. When she’s not involved in writing, she likes to cook, harass her wife and cats, or watch movies. She loves to hear from readers and can be found all over the internet.
This is one of those Megan Derr's frustrating stories which introduces you to awesome characters who obviously can burn the pages with their charm, mischief and hotness, hooks you with unique storyline which has enormous possibilities, makes you smile and giggle and then just... ends. *headdesk* I could easily see 300-pages novel in this and the fact that there isn't one is sad, sad, sad.
This book didn't quite get there for me. It was a little all over the place. The story starts with Shimari, a demon, being summoned by mistake and illegally by a young man who should not be using magic. Still, Shimari seems like a pretty decent sort of demon and decides to help his new master, Andrus, out. This part of the story was pretty interesting. I thought it was going to be a nice story between an unexpected blossoming romance between Shimari and Andrus. But then Megan adds a random third person to the story and it kind of lost it for me. I actually liked Shimari and I liked Andrus and I even liked Oresti, but Oresti was added towards the end of the story and the development wasn't there. It seemed this story ended very abruptly with no real closure except a few sentences of what they were going to do next to "fix" everything. Too short by far. This could have been a great, fully developed book.
Megan Derr's works are very interesting. Her story lines are usually fascinating and her short stories are either remarkably developed for their length, or they are cut off before getting to a satisfying conclusion. All the stories are good, but this one falls into what I call her "not quite there" category. Like enjoying a good lusty bout of sex and reaching for an orgasm and it's right there...oh yeah, right there...wait for me....not yet....wait for me...oh crap. You're done? Shit. Get off me then.
Wonderful story! I'd gladly read more about these characters and their universe. I'd rec this to anyone who likes male/male romance, historical fantasy, and a dash of intrigue.
The premise--an accidental demon summoning--is most fun, I love the characters involved, ended up snickering lots at the adorable, and was also very, very happy about the romance--was surprised, in fact, by how hard I rooted for the characters involved. Which says something, considering how sensitive I am about that subset of romance. Threesomes are generally not my cuppa tea, as so often the lovers involved don't properly balance each other, and end up lopsided in important ways. I didn't see that in the future of these characters, and was thoroughly satisfied by the ending.
Also surprising to me was that despite the Whodunit being pretty clear from the beginning, I wasn't upset; the characters were so stellar, and the sexual tension smoldering, that I can't fault the mystery since it wasn't the central story being told.
If you've got a little while and a dollar to spare, definitely read this. You'll be happy you did.
A typical Megan Derr MM fairy tale :) A sweet-no-sex 3some with a snarky, sexy demon, a lousy, forlorn little wizard and a powerful, brave prince. A perfect good-night read for fantasy fans! ;)
This is what its own name describes; a short story. It does not get into much outside detail or world building and it leaves the story off at a point when more could be told. The amazing thing is what is told within the short span of time.
Shimari responds to a spell summons and is frankly pissed when he gets there to find out it was an accidental summoning by an young untrained amateur. He is angry, but soon finds himself confused and uncertain about his new human master. The matter is further compounded when he needs to feed and another wizard enters the picture....
The story leaves off in a way that elicits much imagination of scenarios in the bedroom and in their future lives. A whole setup is laid out and in such a short time I was captivated by the diverse characters; a warm summers day, a cool breeze, and a crackling summer storm. They compliment each other immensely and make the quick read even faster as I yearned to find a solution to allow them to come together amenably. This happened in a wonderful way and yes, it did leave me wanting more, but I love the story nonetheless. Excellent as always.
Or more like this (I'm not even one for using gif's in a review but this is really appropriate):
In short, the world YES, the characters YES, the threesome starting out here GOD DAMN IT YES!
;_; I need more of this.
Also, I have to add that I'm usually really put off by the way threesome's are written. Don't get me wrong, I love threesome's and I want to read a threesome story that leaves me feeling fulfilled at the end of it. This has only ever happened with Megan Derr's stories for me. Even when they don't go all the way. When she brings her three characters together, everything just clicks into place and I think... (oh well, why not, let's use another gif)
So yeah. I loved it. And I want more. That is all.
The story ended with these words: "eager to see what would happen next" And immediately I thought: "YEAH I WOULD LIKE TO SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN NEXT" Damn these characters were so good, the plot was so nice, I could easily read a long trilogy about them. I love short stories because more often then not I lack the patience to start long books or incomplete series. I can get the feel of being immersed in a story and finish it soon so I can focus on my daily responsibilities without losing myself to daydreaming (not much at least), but god I wish this was one very long story.
Imagine my surprise to find out that there's a book from this author that I hadn't read yet. I'm not talking about newer works but the older ones. And it was in my local library (Libby)!!
I was so excited and it started out great! And just as I was all invested, it ends!
This author is a master at short stories (I totally agree with one of the reviews I read because I looked at some because I was all, did the book I borrowed missing pages?!?!) but my goodness, I so wish there was more of this!! (I'm going to have to look to see if there are any follow up stories or something!).
Normally I think Megan Derr is a master at writing a short story. She seems to have this incredible ability to cram so much action PLUS a satisfying ending into few pages...I normally love her work. I just liked this one, though. The ending left much to be desired and I so wish it had been longer. WHY ISN'T IT LONGER???????
This certainly won't turn me from this author, though. I love her stories and will continue to read ALL of them. :)
This is a light, fun book. It is a children' connect-the-dots, where one can see the path and the endgame both but always fun to do it anyway. The writing and the romance are fast-paced and funky. If you love your tropes and are looking for a quick triad fantasy romance fix, this is it.
For fannish people, this is a "pwp without p". It read like a one-shot shounen-ai, in terms of dynamics and easthetics.
Again I love everything this author does but sometimes the stories make me feel like I'm reaching my arm out and I'm about to touch but my fingertips only glaze. It drives me crazy!!! I just felt like there was something almost there almost like a climax and yet it ended instead. Still a freaking good read though.
Sweet. I expected it to be a love story between Andrus and Shimari. I was really surprised when Oresti turned up and it basically became a threesome. I liked how unashamed Shimari was of what he wanted, Oresti's amusement and Andrus' fluster. Though it felt more like a set up for a longer, deeper story.

This was a promising introduction - wait! What? That was it??? I am sooo disappointed! This was really really good, but it read like chapters one and two of a much longer book. I am far from satisfied. Consequently, I am deducting a full star for leaving me "high and dry" :-( Hopefully the author can be convinced to turn this into a full book ...
Wish it would've been longer and more drawn-out, then I'm sure it would've been a full five star! :) But I loved it nonetheless, just thought it all happened so very soon - I wish there were much more... :)
I love this author's short stories and this is no exception. It's a sweet tale of a wizard who has never been taught how to control his magic and accidentally summons a demon instead of a fairy. Very enjoyable but had so much potential that I would have liked it to be longer.
...so what did happen next? - Loved the story, loved the characters. I can easily imagine another 100 or more pages. It's one of the stories when you want more and are disappointed that there is no sequel.
I really enjoyed what there was of this story, but for me it probably needed to be double the length. I wanted to know, not only if Andrus's problems got resolved, but how the King and court reacted to everything that had happened. An interesting concept, just not long enough for me
Cute and super sweet but my god I wish it was a full fledged story and not a short. I loved the characters and I would have loved to see the resolution of the murder plot. There was so much left unsaid, but I loved it anyway Maybe someday Megan will see fit to rewrite this into a full story.
The plot and characters are well thought out and very compelling! The only thing that kept it from being a 5 star, in my opinion, is that it felt slightly rushed. I felt like more exploration of the aftermath of their group-soul bonding would have really interesting as well.
Demon & wizards This is a fun, fantastic little gem of a story 😁✨😁 It’s a quick read with everything making Megan Derr a favorite of mine: easy, fluid story with striking characters in a dream fantasy world!
This was okay! While I really enjoyed Megan Derr's other short stories, I felt like this one was a little too short for me to get attached to the characters or the story. This could have certainly been a little more fleshed out.
