In the old days, what my grandchildren call ‘back in the day’, a well educated Englishman would have a reasonable grasp of Greek History, at least as far as Athens and Sparta and perhaps Argos and the Argoli, as well as a decent understanding of Thucydides and Alexander the Great’s campaigns, either the Egyptian or the Indus Adventures but probably not both in any depth. If such a person had further enjoyed an English Grammar School Education they might well also have touched upon Greek Mythology and had a good handle at least about the major Gods and Goddesses; Zeus, Athena, Medusa, Perseus. They might even have vaguely heard about the Ottoman Empire.

It is, however, highly debatable if they would be aware of, or broadly well educated in the complex and very lengthy history of the Greek speaking people as can be achieved by reading and absorbing these three interrelated volumes. The first deals with the prehistory of the city states, their flowering and then the setting up of the widespread colonies around the shores of the Mediterranean Sea to decant the excess people and give them agricultural land and room to develop and true growing space. The second volume then deals with the period after the Roman conquest when the somewhat moribund Greeks were taken over by the peoples from the east, mostly the Turks of the new Ottoman Empire and the outfalling of these after the First World War, including the Greek monarchy. Finally in a very useful addendum, the overly complex myths which underpinned much of the pre-Christian Greek mindset, are untwined and explained in a modern but compelling manner which removes much of the encrustations of complexity that had developed when stories, mostly oral and very long in the telling, had become overladen with decades, even centuries if misunderstanding and confusion.

These three books are a very good follow up to the earlier two on the Persian and Iranian Empires and these publications, especially the first two, serve as companion pieces to those earlier books by the same author.

The first part looks at the history of Greece from 7000BCE to the 1900s AD, broken down into four parts: the Neolithic Age to the Bronze Age Collapse, the Archaic Years to the Roman Conquest, The Roman and Byzantine Periods, and New and Modern Greek History. This is a compact history of Greece, looking into the evolution of eras and the impact the history has to today. The book is structured with rhetorical questions and narrative quotes to make the content engaging and informative.

The second part looks at Greek Mythology from From Chaos to Uranus to The Odyssey and the Return of Heroes. This part shows an overview of the Gods and Goddesses followed by their interaction and stories that are known today, such as Herakles and Hera. These myths exist to demonstrate human nature.

Overall, a great insight into the events and myths.
