One Last Shot

Rate this book
Ava couldn’t be less like her popstar twin sister—and now she needs to take her place.

A two-month tour impersonating her pop-sensation twin sister Eva—or Nova on stage—sounds like Ava Blakely’s worst nightmare. For one thing, she can’t sing, and being on a stage is her idea of torture.

But it might be the only way to save Eva’s pregnancy.

Tour photographer Freja Callister just wanted a vacation and some pizza, but a last-minute request to shoot the Nova tour pulls her in—especially when the popstar seems a little different than she remembers. And much too interested in Freja now.

For Ava, falling for her photographer while hiding her real identity is a catastrophe in the making. But hey, what do they have to lose?

One Last Shot is a 100,000-word twin-swap popstar romance, and Lily Seabrooke’s and Jacqueline Ramsden’s first collaborative book, featuring a dysfunctional band that learns to work together, a secret identity, and a tour fling that turns a little too serious. Content warnings for open-door sex scenes, a creepy older director who wants to get young pop idols naked, Cecilia opening doors, and Mister Pippins definitely, absolutely having thoughts and feelings.

Jokes and comedies are more likely to make me cringe than laugh. This book though brought me a lot of joy, not only because it did make me laugh several times but it made me do so with tenderness.

Ava grew up thinking she couldn’t be more different from her twin sister Eva. Everything Eva is and likes is everything Ava hates. So when Eva, now a famous pop singer under the name Nova, shows up at her dorm room door and asks Ava to impersonate her for a couple of months, Ava wishes she could say no. Circumstances, however, push her to agree and thus begins an unexpectedly illuminating journey of self-discovery for the quiet History student.

I’ve read a few of Lily Seabrooke’s books and enjoyed them all and I’ve been wanting to read one of Jacqueline Ramsden’s for a while, so when I saw they had co-authored this one, it seemed like the perfect opportunity. Also, they’re one of the cutest couples on social media and I know that shouldn’t count but it added to my motivation.

So much so that I didn’t read the blurb and I’m glad I didn’t. Twin swap? Slapstick comedy material. Not my thing. Huge cringe potential. Ava is so relatable though, and Eva isn’t as shallow as she seems to be, and let’s not forget how hot Freja is, in so many ways. I loved that there’s a very good romance as well as a rediscovering-who-my-sister-really-is arc and that both are funny and sweet and heartwarming. The story dragged a bit somewhere in the middle of the second half then picked up speed again with a series of twists.

I hope this won’t be the only time Seabrooke and Ramsden write together. And I want to start reading the latter’s books even more now.

I am a huge fan of both authors and when I heard they did a co-write I couldn’t have been more excited. As different as their individual writing is, I was curious how they write a story together. Don’t get me wrong I didn’t doubt for one second that it will be an amazing book, but like I said I was totally curious about the how. Of course I was also curious if I notice who has written which parts. You see so many things to be curious about and there is just one thing you can do about it, which is to read the book.

My excitement grew even more as soon as I started to read this book, because the start is just fantastic. We get to know why Ava dislikes her twin Eva so much, even though it’s not what twins do. You also get to know what important role the Boogeyman played. They definitely couldn’t be more different and there is only one reason Ava agrees to cover for Eva and that’s because she has the biggest heart. Her big heart is also the reason she is going to do all the things she never wanted to which is to make music and be Eva or Nova for her fans.

What she didn’t expect is how everything starts to grow on her the more time she spend with the band and on the tour. Of course having a hot photographer in form of Freja doesn’t have anything to do with her liking what she never wanted to like. But this can’t be because Nova isn’t gay, even though she isn’t Nova.

For Freja it’s definitely not much easier. She knows Nova from before, but the person she is spending more and more time with is so different. And so not straight. Or is she? Have I mentioned I loved the whole complications on their way to the end? Because yes, I had so much fun. I also felt like Freja and Ava couldn’t have been any more perfect. It should have only been some fun on the tour for them (and they definitely had some great fun), but what can you do when you notice more and more that you complement each other so well?

Well I guess to find out you need to go on this ride with them and Nova‘s/Ava’s/Eva’s almost constantly bickering band members, their sometimes grumpy but lovable manager, Mister Pippins, an all the time gross director and many more. It’s definitely a hell of a ride with lots of fun. In the end I felt happy and definitely vote for another co-write of these two. I feel like they fit together as authors like they do as partners. And in case you were wondering if I found out who wrote which part. I guessed wrong very early in the book but just a bit later I got it. And now you better get this book and enjoy.

Identical twins switching identities - that's been done before but coming from the duo of Seabrooke and Ramsden - that caught my eye.
Eva and Ava may look alike but that "twin thing" ends right there. Different interests and mindsets coupled with childhood memories sets them apart. Ava can't stand her sister and is concentrating on completing her history degree. Budding popstar Eva/Nova is signed up for a two month tour that could really break out her career then the unexpected happens and the switch is on.
Along comes Freja, tour photographer for the two months. She knows Nova from before but sees subtle differences now. They mesh quite nicely but Freja is gay and Nova is "straight" - right?
I like the back and forth between Ava(Nova) and Cecilia. Her manager will prove to have everyone's best interests at heart. As written, the band is a squabbling mess and label director Hooper is nothing but a scumbag. There is angst, bits of humor, snappy dialogue, utter cluelessness (on Eva's part) and heat. Talents are uncovered but who is who and who knows what? Nothing good comes from a long, big lie. When truths come out will Ava and Freja be hot and happy together?
My burning question, who is Casey's daddy? Is that a teaser for more to come?

A different take on the twin switcheroo from a new writing duo = 5 stars. Cheers!!

The Twin Switch!

I have read books written by both authors and was therefore thrilled to hear that they are co-authoring this book.

Twins with completely different personalities swapping places with each other…I was wondering how the swap would work without people noticing. But the authors made it happen.

The storyline was engaging and it kept me interested throughout. It was really nice to journey with Ava as she goes on tour as Nova with Cecilia, the band and the crew. She was completely out of her comfort zone but managed to fit in and made her presence known and felt in this chaotic group. Ava was very likeable and certainly has a big heart. It was nice seeing how she got along with each individual member of the band.

The romance between Ava and Freja was sweet. There was an instant attraction between them with real feelings to follow. I was initially not a fan of Freja but she grew on me and I liked her in the end.

I do wish there were more interaction between the twins. And would prefer if there were less expletive language used throughout the book.

But overall a very enjoyable read. Recommended!

This is the wildest tale about the music industry I can imagine and I've been part of it, the touring and all, until I got too old at 36. It is funny, too, the whole idea to start with, but even more the dialogues.
All of the characters are well worked and the romance is everything you expect, too. A great read.

I couldn’t put this book down! Having two young children forced me to but I just wanted to keep reading to find out what would happen next! The characters are so relatable, funny and secretly sweet! Even the side characters. The MC relationship had so much steam and hope, chaos and compatibility. Love this trope (mistaken/fake identity) but sometimes they are very predictable. Not necessarily a bad thing but this story keeps you guessing, wanting to read and not wanting it to end. The relationships with the side characters add greatness to the story and the MC’s. Whether you’re a fan of these authors, this trope or even just sapphic romance then don’t pass this one up! Well-written, positive and hea.

I was really looking forward to this one, happy to report it delivered. I’ve read a lot by Lily and one from Jacqueline (so far), in the beginning I felt like I could sorta tell who wrote what. But soon I became engaged with the story and could no longer tell.

Ava (Nova) who switches places with her twin (Eve, somewhat confusing, but they are such different people it wasn’t difficult to catch on), meets Freja, a photographer who is hired to tour with the band. They catch the feels, and you know the rest. I really enjoyed Ava navigating a world she didn’t know to help her sister while falling for the hot photographer, there was some great spicy in this story.

As always with Seabrooke and Ramsden, there was really funny banter and some great secondary characters. I really hope they team up again (or more!)

This was everything I've come to (happily) expect from Lily and Jacqueline and more. Devoured it the moment I got the copy and wasn't disappointed for a moment. Angst that makes you understand instead of getting angry, balls of energy that never leave you bored for a moment, good intentions and two gay disasters. Lily's usual prose that smacks you on the head with life lessons while you walk away still feeling like she was subtle and gentle. Jacqueline crafting another gentle character who just wants to be there for her loves and doesn't know what to do.

If you read romance to warm your heart, keep you entertained, and make yourself a better person, this book is excellent. Would recommend to literally anyone interested in sapphic romance - whether they're an avid reader or just now dipping their toes.

I've read from both of these authors before and really enjoyed their books, and their writing worked so well together here! I really enjoyed this. At times you do have to suspend your disbelief, because how is it so easy for her to pass as her famous twin sister, but no one in her day-to-day life has ever mistaken her for her sister or guessed they were twins? But who even cares when the book is this much fun?

I will first state that I got hold of this book as part of the ARC program.

I will also disclose that Lily Seabrooke is one of my favorite authors, and that Jacqueline Ramsden is another favorite, and that her book 'The Art of Growing' is one of my favorite lesfic novels, period.

So, finding out that there is a book by both authors threw me into a tizzy. Grabbed a copy, burned through it.

Lily has a fantastic talent for writing characters who are flighty, she also has a great talent for writing characters who are seriously snarky. Putting the two together into the character of Ava makes for a fun read.

The other MC, Freja, is also a lot of fun. She's serious, but also funny, and can trade quips with the other characters with ease. She doesn't seem to be afraid of anything. The downside is she also comes off as extremely aloof.

The Good: The characters. The characters were pretty decent all around. The manager Cecilia was a fun read, with threats of unimaginable violence that could never be done. The band mates are fairly enjoyable to read, especially once they start getting whipped into shape. The friendships that Ava built, especially with the female bandmates were great.

The overall plot isn't twisty. No surprise villains in the 3rd act. But it's comfortable, and it works.

The Bad: Some things seemed to be left unfinished. Ava's sister Eva never really reveals who the baby's father was. Granted, that's ok, but it did seem like there might be some possibility of it being one of the bandmates. My curiosity was piqued, and I want to know!

I would have liked to have seen Ava and Freja's relationship more fleshed out. Didn't need more of the sex stuff, but it would have been great to see them being... them, together more.

I'd have liked to have seen more scenes where the band conquers the things that oppressed them in the beginning.

I was disappointed that at one point, Ava's having a crisis that is caused by the monumental favor that Eva and Cecilia have requested of her, and she never goes to Cecilia and lowers the boom on her to get that helped out. It seemed like it would have been a fair play for Ava to throw it back at her. Granted, the twinswap wouldn't have been full circle in that situation, but it does seem like a bit of a loose thread of plot.

I feel as though Cecilia's nurturing came through in very brief glimpses, and I would have liked to have seen more of that leaking through.

More comeuppance for the bad guy! He got screwed in the end, but a follow up about karma taking him down would have been great.

I would say that one of my biggest gripes is the use of the word 'Decimated' in terms of destruction. Decimated means 1 in 10. Replace it with Devastated. I only saw it once in the book, but it sticks in my craw.

I was lucky enough to receive this as an ARC from Lily and Jacqueline.

To summarise: I loved the plot, and the writing, and the MCs - I just had a couple of tiny gripes that knocked the fifth star off.

Now let's see if I can do this review without spoilers...

I was absolutely hooked from the beginning. It only took me so long to read because life (and my other commitments) got in the way. The twins' predicament was set out quickly and clearly, and I'm not going to lie, given how different they were as characters, I didn't see how they were going to make it work. (They did. Obviously.)

My biggest gripe was the sheer number of characters. I know it's not nearly as much as some other books, but I think because most of them were introduced about the same time, without a whole lot to distinguish them, they started to meld together in my head. Not Cecilia - I dare anyone to forget Cecilia, she's written so well and is such a unique character - but the bandmates, and the crew. It was only in the second half of the book that I managed to start untangling them.

My other gripe was the character of Eva - she struck me as someone who would probably irritate me in real life. Absolutely hyper, endlessly so, running at a million miles an hour. But I can see why it was necessary for her character to be that way, as it definitely enhances the plot.

Moaning over. Now onto the things I loved. And there are many!!

I've already mentioned Cecilia, but... Cecilia. What an icon. Especially when she stands up to the bad guy. I definitely don't envy her position, but she absolutely rocked it. (Pun not intended.)

Ava and Freja were written perfectly. It almost felt like I knew them in real life, because they were so three-dimensional. And I was SO rooting for them, through the good times and the bad - I think I would have staged a one-woman riot if the ending hadn't been so perfect.

I have to dedicate a paragraph to Jovi. He really struck a chord with me, because I see a lot of myself in him. I promised no spoilers, so I won't give any more details, but I think he was my favourite character (no offence to Ava and Freja).

And Jovi's friendship with Freja deserves its own paragraph. It developed amazingly across the book.

I could say more, but I've probably bored most of you by now anyway. All I will say is... BUY THIS BOOK! You won't regret it. Thank you for the opportunity Jacqueline and Lily - you rock!

This was an awesome novel. I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected, which was delightful. It was incredibly fun to read. This novel was also a lot more realistic than I expected considering the convoluted and ridiculous plotline; characters acted realistically and reacted appropriately to the events taking place. I really appreciated this, as I think realistic stories with unrealistic plotlines is one of my favorite things. It was well done! There isn’t much more to say considering that I have nothing to nitpick or complain about. 5-stars, recommended!

Highlights:
-The author successfully (in my opinion) justified all of the elements that I would have found unrealistic given the plot of the story. For example, they needed a lot of auto-tune magic to make this deception work and instead of shying away from this detail they mentioned it repeatedly (how much she sucks at singing). I fully believe that they could auto-tune an amateur into a star. It was a bit of a stretch how much the band was chill with the idea of an amateur slotting in and performing at their level, but I suppose they just really liked her by the end of the novel.
-The characters! This was the standout element of this novel for sure. Ava of course was well developed and had a great voice. Eva was absolutely delightful, and I loved every time she came onto the page; I also enjoyed how she was surprisingly competent despite being portrayed as mostly a clueless ditz. The manager was an awesome character that I loved, and every member of the band was developed reasonably well. Most novels don’t give this many characters this level of development.
-Ava was a showcase of a disaster lesbian at their finest. It was very entertaining to see her fall apart and stumble, despite being otherwise well put together and capable. It was very “human” and a great angle for the character.
-Their relationship was on-point. It was steamy, there was great chemistry, it was fun, and they handled their issues in a surprisingly mature manner.
-I liked how . This was a little detail, but it added a lot to the realism of the novel, because of course that is what would have happened!
-I don’t know why, but I am incredibly happy that the author cut to black every time they got on stage to do a show. We simply didn’t need to see the actual performance, and I am sure I would have ended up nitpicking it. The events leading up to a show, and after, were the important parts for this story.
-Little details. There were a lot of little details that added a lot to the novel, both the enjoyment and the realism factor. I loved the mic stand. The stage hands with actual names and reoccurring appearances. Little things like that add a lot to a novel.

I love the twin-swap trope, one that goes back to my childhood with the original version of The Parent Trap. It's rare that I find a story that executes this premise well, let alone perfectly, but Lily and Jacqueline have done just that with One Last Shot.

Ava and Eva are identical twins, but seemingly opposites in every other way, with little contact since Eva became a famous pop star with the stage name Nova. When Eva contacts Ava with a plea to pull off the swap and take her place as Nova on a 2-month tour, Ava is hesitant, but eventually goes along with it. What unfolds is an often hilarious series of events, with Ava trying to convince everyone she is Nova, including Freja, the tour photographer. Freja never really took notice of Nova before, but suddenly finds herself drawn to her and she can't quite figure out why. You'll have to read the book to find out the rest, but rest assured this is a very sweet romance. In addition to the romance, I really loved the other relationships formed along the way, including the one with Eva. Also, I'm a big fan of Eva-isms (you'll know what I mean after you read the book).

The premise is super cute.
You move mountains for love. For every kind of love!
Initially, I had trouble coming to terms with this twin dynamic. Of course there are twins who, like normal siblings, don't like each other, but I hadn't read about it that often.
Eva and Ava are two really very different personalities and they are like fire and water.
It was all the more difficult for me to believe that ava actually fulfilled her sister's request.
Although one can understand the motives.
However, it's not that easy to imagine being able to replace a pop star.
The story gets really interesting when Freja comes into play and the chemistry between the two becomes incredibly explosive.
Really beautiful scenes and the photo shoots, almost resembling a foreplay, make for hot scenes.
Many of the band members and also the manager are funny, ironic and also super cute supporting characters.
I liked the development of both sisters.
Both in their sisterly relationship with one another and in personal growth as a person in difficult situations
…and there are many to overcome.

Eva and Ava decide to switch places for a couple of months for the last tour or so. While pretending to be Eva/Nova, Ava discovers the director wants her to go in a different direction that’d fund his greed. By meeting Freja the tour photographer, and being in front of her camera lens, Ava learns to be more comfortable on stage despite the short, tight clothes tat the director wants. Ava overhears the director saying some things that tell her that the director has less than honorable intentions. Ava and the band decide to give it ‘One Last Shot’ to prove they have what it takes and to turn this “last shot” into a possible forever.

I really enjoyed reading how Ava became more comfortable being Eva as well as meeting Mr pippins. I loved how Freja was able to break down Ava’s walls and become friends that might lead to more. Well done!!.

I loved how Lily and Jacqueline came together to write this delightful romance. I thought the perspectives for both Ava and Freja were delightful and more importantly unique - a challenge for sapphic romances!

I thought Ava's anxiety flowed nicely into her increasing self-confidence and overall growth as a character. I think Freja was a little less fleshed out, but a good balance to both Ava and Eva behind the scenes throughout.

I also thought the sex scenes were fantastic - one of the things I have always loved about Lily's books and Jacqueline did a great job in this regards as well.

Well the situation was far-fetched, I thought the character work around each person's reaction to it was believable - including Eva in the wings being an absolute nuisance, albeit a sympathetic one. I hope these two write together again!.

Eva Blakely, aka pop star Nova, can’t make the dates for the tour with her band due to a high risk pregnancy so she enlists her sister Ava’s help. The tour photographer Freja notices right away that Nova is not acting quite like herself but Freja kind of likes this new version of her.
The plot and author co-write with Ramsden and Seabrooke made me want to love this but unfortunately it didnt quite hit the mark for me. Ava and Freja had some good chemistry and I liked them but Eva drove me a little crazy. It also felt like the romance portion was very surface level and they didn’t seem to know each other all that well. There were also a couple plot holes and loose ends that weren’t quite explained. Overall it was an ok read but not quite what I had hoped for. Love both of these authors though so please dig into their back catalog!

I really liked this book. Lily is an amazing writer and her sensibility is in every single page. I only had a problem with Freja, she is sold like this mature person, almost a therapist but when it counts, she is just as judgemental and selfish as everybody else. She has a lot of chemistry with Ava and it's nice to watch it blossom throughout the book. I really missed knowing a little more about Eva, who's the father of her child? Why does she acts like a child all the time? Maybe she can find herself bisexual in a book of her own?.

What’s not to love? It’s got twin life swapping / hidden identity and pop star tropes going on. There’s quite a large cast of characters & they are all so different and well written. They all have little quirks but they are believable and you really want to know them.
I was concerned a joint write might seem disjointed but honestly complete forgot that while reading. I couldn’t tell who wrote what and only know because of end notes. I will also be checking out other books by JR who I hadn’t read before.
Totally recommend this one.

Super cute band imposter romance

When two great authors cowrite them you're in for something beautiful.

When two great authors who are super cute and in love cowrite then you get something so super cute, beautiful and loving that it's next level super cute.

Jacqueline and Lily are both outstanding writers on their own but they are a powerful pairing who imbue the most adorable characters with their own cuteness.

Is there a lot of cuteness in this review? Yes... Can you ever have too much?

The characters are fun and deep, the story is involved but not in an off-putting complex way.

I think Ava and Eva Blakely are my new cute heroes.

Again, Lily Seabrooke writes an awesome story. I've not read Jacqueline Ramsden before but I will definitely be checking out more of her writing.

Ava and Eva are identical twins who really don't get along. When they need to swap places, Ava falls for the photographer, Freja. But of course, she's fallen for her while playing the role of her sister - awkward.

I love these characters. They were funny and witty but also loving and caring. This was probably one of the best co-written books I've read as the both of their writing styles melded together so well.

I'm hoping there's another co-written book from these two as I'd love to read it!

Very engaging, unique twist!

Ava has agreed to a two month tour impersonating her pop star twin sister Eva who finds herself pregnant. Oh my gosh, these two could not be more different, but these authors did a fabulous job of creating ways in which they could pull it off. When Ava begins a tour fling with her photographer Freya, how will they keep it a secret?

All the characters were interesting, diverse and humorous with much drama on and off the stage. The side conversations between the sisters were spaced in when needed and helped to make the story gel. This is a book I'm not going to forget. Authors Lily and Jacqueline are a delightful writing duo!

Couldn’t be much better than this! 😍👍🥰

With a cast of unique characters, many of whom defy logic, this ensemble works beautifully to, not only entertain the reader, but pound home the realization that logic is in the eye of the beholder and that love is the only thing that holds this insane world together.
Any book with the name Lily Seabrooke on it is cover is almost certain to bring joy and laughter into the heart of any reader and her new partner seems to have brought even more empathy and heartfelt compassion into her creation.
I look forward to more of the same from this collaboration.

History student Ave is stunned when her rock star twin sister Eva shows up, begging her to body double for her while she has a baby. Including going on a two month tour.

(Have they not heard of Milli Vanilli? A lipsynching controversy could kill her career.)

Okay, Cecelia the manager knows the risks. The band is self destructing, the label sucks, so if it all goes bad they can just move on.

Freja, a photographer, is covering the tour and is Ave's type. If only her sister wasn't straight. Plus she immediately picks up on the band falling apart, too.

Also, Eva is honestly a airhead .. unlike Ave

3 out of 5 stars, it's cute but had suspension of disbelief issues.

An Interesting Twin Win!

I love the way Lily Seabrooke tells a story. Add in Jacqueline Ramsden’s style and you have a winner. I was hesitant to read this, afraid it would come off as a Parent Trap twin copy. I was so glad I stuck with it. Twins Ava and Eva are your leads as the story begins. The characters are strong but vulnerable. The story takes you on an adventure and your know something is going to happen but the twists and turns is what makes this story lovable. A must read!

I genuinely cannot overstate how much I freaking loved this book. Everyone in it is a dumbass! And it's hilarious and heartwarming! This book is everything I love about Lily Seabrooke's writing and Jacqueline Ramsden's writing all rolled into one amazing, ridiculous story. I laughed, I cried, I recommended it to my therapist and forgot to mention how steamy it is. 😂 I genuinely think this is the best book I've read by either Lily or Jacqueline. There's something really special about them writing together. And they are both amazing!

The twin swap trick leads to happiness.

Ava wants nothing to do with her rockstar twin. Eva, or Nova, needs her more than ever. The tour needs a Nova, the band needs the tour. The tour needs a photographer to capture the moments.

Can Ava manage to be Nova for this tour? Can she manage not to rip everything apart at the seams? Cana lie told for a good reason be an okay lie? Does love forgive lies?

Good book

This was worth the read. As twins go yes they always try and fool people in guessing which one is which, but with Eva and Ave, Ave wanted to be different from her twin sister. When Eva and needs her sister help because she is pregnant Ave is there for her. Ave is now Nova the popular pop singer and she is very nervous. Freja is the photographer for the band and is fall for Nova after they have a photo shoot together. Trying to save the band and trying to be her sister. This was an emotional of ups and downs but a wonderful book

Twins Eva and Ava do a life swap when Eva or Nova, her stage name, discovers that she’s pregnant and it’s high risk. Ava is not a singer so this is going to be impossible as far as she’s concerned. Freda Carllister is a music photographer and is hired to document the tour. A crazy tour with a dysfunctional group of characters traveling the US and Canada. Absolutely loved the book and the two authors are a brilliant couple.
