An essay that explains very well the differences between a disease like COVID and one like AIDS. Then starting more from the differences than from the similarities, the author gives an excursus on what has happened in the last four years, how there is no good reason to think that COVID will become anything but endemic, and how we could use what we have learned from this pandemic to prevent others or at least try to manage them differently.
I am not a doctor, but the words used by the author are understandable by anyone as well as the pictures and statistics.

I received from the Publisher a complimentary digital advanced review copy of the book in exchange for a honest review.

The HIV perspective and assessment was very good, and overall public health from an infectious disease doc, but I found some SARS COVID-19 opinions troubling and didn’t finish the book past chapter 3 (of 7).

How can an infectious disease (ID) doc support not masking as a way to support vaccines? And her opinions that the vaccinated catching SARS COVID-19 and recovering with mild symptoms from the vaccine ended the progression of the virus, similar to having the flu are troubling. This medical professional didn’t seem to give any care or consideration to the fact that long COVID should be a priority in NOT catching COVID in the first place, regardless of mild symptoms or not.

In May 2021, the CDC & Biden admin announced that vaccinated people could safely stop wearing masks. Since then (as of May 2024), over 750,000 people have been killed by C0VlD in the U.S., including many vaccinated people. Over 28,000 have died in 2024. Over 25 million now have Long C0VlD.

Perhaps I didn’t give her a chance in the three chapters, but I couldn’t go on with the downplaying of the virus seeming to end when symptoms of the acute virus ended. Troubling.

Wasn’t sure how this one would be because the pandemic is talked about so much and I am tired but it did provide a new and interesting perspective for a post pandemic life

Dr. Monica Gandhi presents a compelling case regarding the mishandling of the Covid pandemic; both at a public health and popular media level. As an infectious disease specialist Dr Gandhi compares the pandemic to another public health crisis-AIDS. She highlights the development of effective treatments and humane care to mitigating the deadly effects of AIDS as well as misinformation. She also explains the disparities in treatment.

The AIDS epidemic is then contrasted with the public health response and the media's portrayal of Covid. I believe she presents an obiective and incisive exposure of what went right and what went wrong with the response. A well referenced account emphasizes the importance of vaccines in reducing cases of serious illness and debunks the benefit of public school closures and extended lockdowns. She presents a compelling case to show how certain policies created disparities in economic classes and suspended much needed healthcare.

As a nurse practitioner I can personally attest to the stigma experienced while working in various long term care facilities.

Thank you Dr Gandhi for presenting an honest account with a compassionate demeanor; deciphering this confounding virus and proposing sane and well-researched ways to combat future pandemics

An excellent, rational and balanced analysis of the Covid-19 pandemic and the United States’ public health response to it. Easy to read and understand- highly recommended for anyone wishing to think critically and compassionately about pandemics and public health.
