INTERESTING AND HAS PLENTY OF POTENTIAL. I LOOK FORWARD TO THE NEXT INSTALLATION! This story would have been better if the slow burn wasn't...stilted. It might be unfair of me to compare with highly-rated fae stories I've read with well-paced and better written chemistry/sexual attraction because I honestly didn't feel any REAL or NATURAL attraction between the MCs. IT WAS (a little) AWKWARD.
Only till the end was I more convinced that the male lead ISAEL was truly captivated by our heroine, because she started off with the ugly duckling vibes before turning into a swan. That SWAN version of her, made him changed his attitude almost overnight, so you can imagine my disbelief.
ISAEL is the high lord of elves and much more. Frankly, the book is quite heavy on the politics and yes, naturally there's a lot of world building stuff to take in, so pardon me if I addressed his position wrongly. Was it boring? No, in fact, it was entertaining and intriguing, though I would have liked to read more ISAEL and CERA bonding time. Mostly, their conversations were platonic, doubtful and polite without a hint of attraction. It's like trying to cross a roomful of sleeping children. The attraction building wasn't fluid (more like I was being TOLD instead of feeling their burgeoning feelings), and it soon plunged into insta-love territory - at least on ISAEL's part. Despite having a glimpse of his character, there wasn't enough to warm me up to him, so hopefully we'll get to see a softer side of ISAEL later - MORE- than what we've seen here. When the blurb mentioned him as "cold", yeah no kidding, apart from sex, ISAEL acted quite like an impenetrable statue with plenty of discipline.
That being said, I had HIGH HOPES for the heroine who was SPECIAL enough to MOVE A STATUE...but I have to say I wasn't impressed.
CERA's a little bland for me. Neither dull-witted nor entirely captivating either. Compared again to other heroines I've read, Cera lacked colour. Maybe she's meant to be that way, and she'll blossom in time given how she has lived her life being rejected and castigated for being the daughter of a "whore". A princess only in terms, but still a low-born good enough for bargaining. Growing up in her stifling and toxic childhood, Cera's part doormat who accepts her lot in life too easily. Easier to submit than to put up a fight right? Well, that's what made her dull to me. But we have hope! It seems after ingesting ISAEL'S blood and being reborn as an elf, she now manifests unforetold power that could shake the kingdom upon its foundation. Fingers crossesd!
OVERALL this was interesting, PLOT wise, but it lacked real chemistry and attraction I prefer in terms of the romance. In reverse, the world building captured my attention more than the MCs love story who I still have doubts about. Of course, there's the second book to consider and I hope it'll satisfy my current qualms. Unfortunately, if you're looking for good smexy times, there was only ONE (rather awkward and mayhaps rushed sex scene) at the end, but certainly no thrill for readers who enjoy erotica. Nevertheless, it was still an interesting story and I'll wait for the next book!
