Jinua is a paladin, granted powers by the gods and sent on missions to protect their interests in the mortal realm.
Ontiku is a necromancer, hated by gods and mortals alike.
After their unlikely alliance against Enejel, the two follow the evil queen's trail to the city of Capulstos, certain that they'll go their separate ways as soon as the mission is complete--assuming they don't kill each other, first. But what should be a simple investigation gets complicated by the presence of a city-wide plague, caused by Hetgarib, the god of disease.
As Ontiku risks exposing himself as a hated necromancer and Jinua risks the wrath of the gods, the two find themselves once again unlikely allies. Though neither one knows whether this alliance--or their lives--will survive a city full of death, disease, and vengeance.
Excellent novella in what I hope will be a lengthy series!
Hetgarib's Curse takes the young Paladin and old Necromancer on what proves to be a step along the way of each of their parallel quests, through a divinely plagued town, where they pause for healing and setting things aright. Hijinks ensue, and we get to know these characters strengths and integrity a bit better, as they do of one another. One appreciates the depiction and touch of the divine in these books. If you like Lois McMaster Bujold's imminent five-fold deities in her Chalion & Penric books, you may be intrigued with these gods and their servant and, er, non-servant in C. M. Alongi's work.
I'm loving this novella series! Book 2 continues the journey of unlikely duo Ontiku, a Necromancer, and Jinua, a Paladin of the god Jadiim. The pair finds themselves in a city cursed with a deadly plague caused by a curse from the god Hetgarib. Jinua and Ontiku throw themselves into healing the sick and dying before pinpointing the city's King as the reason for the curse. Despite their differences and the ingrained prejudices against each other, Jinua and Ontiku together use their powers to effect good, as they continue to unravel the mystery to which they have been assigned.
Plague book!!! A really fun follow-up to the first with the same fascinating and more fleshed-out world-building. This time our favorite duo had to deal with the politics of both kings and Greek-god-esque-petty gods. We got to know them both a little better and there's some solid character development. I loved experiencing Jinua's unsubtle approach to entering rooms and seeing her and Ontiku's friendship develop.
A rousing adventure following Jinua and Ontiku as they continue their mission of finding the necromancer's financier! I like this one. A great continuation from To Kill A Necromancer, the characters continue to grow, and the story just keeps getting better. Some tense moments, and some annoyance with the people our mains were dealing with were the only downsides. I quite liked the side characters Mila and Despyna in this. Eagerly awaiting the next installment.
This world could easily be turned into a comic book or tv series with a new monster or curse or villain with every issue/episode . Watching Jinua react to her first real time in the world that isn’t as black and white as she always thought but still be committed to being a good person is refreshing. How do we react when supposed allies fail us and the stereotypes of our enemies are revealed for the lies they are.
The way the main characters interact is extremely entertaining. The bond between them growing stronger as well hits in the feels as well. I am having to pace myself reading the set so I don't have long to wait to read the next one. I would HIGHLY recommend everyone to read this series.
A Thrilling continuation of the Blackwing series, we get to delve deeper into the personalities and morality of our main characters and see more of the world at large and how the gods affect the world in which they live. a thrilling story that had me biting at the bit to see just how much of a mess they have gotten into. spoiler, it's a big one!
A wonderfully touching story with very real feeling protagonists and excellent world building. I want to know more about the people, gods and world with every drop of information I get, yet I never feel as if I'm missing something I need to know.
I enjoyed the plot, characters and world building. This series is a nice, cozy fantasy story. I am interested to learn more about the unique magic system as the story continues.
This was even better than the first! I really enjoyed how the main characters' relationship evolved and the hints at where later books are going. Can't wait for the next!
A really enjoyable sequel to the novella "To kill a Necromancer" I really enjoyed watching the characters grow. The plot was compelling and well realized
