“This book was written for those who aspire to maintain peace of heart in all things, living in joy, simplicity and mercy. With very little, sometimes with just a few words which bring us back to the essential, it is possible over time to forge our inner selves...”
Not many disciplines survive the test of time. I was introduced to Peace of Heart by a friend in 2000, and it has called me back again and again to what is essential: “the trusting of faith” . For each day there is a simple thought or prayer, never more than 20 or 30 words, so I can read it first thing in the morning and last thing at night, surrounding the day with trust. It is surprising how often it fits with what is going on, evoking realities that, woven into creation and brought to life uniquely in human beings, open a way forward.
"Six centuries after Christ, a Christian thinker, Isaac of Nineveh, wrote these words of fire: “All God can do is give his love”. Those who understand this luminous reality begin to ask themselves: how can I communicate such a solid hope?"
The book is impressive in its depth but never departs from the realities of life. There is struggle and darkness here, the need to draw strength from God when others distort our intentions, an awareness of how the world’s demands can cause us to lose our way. It addresses complex issues in the human family with a refreshing directness without dishonouring fundamental mysteries. For example:
"Even if the Risen Christ is unrecognized, he is present, 'united to every human being without exception'"
Many books offer daily readings, usually from a multitude of sources rather than one author who has spent years in contemplation. So many of them are insipid, a form of poetic anaesthesis. Yet everyone, without exception, to whom I have introduced this book, has found themselves momentarily stilled. An encounter has taken place and we are stopped in our tracks like those who have been suddenly healed, and our direction is changed.
"With almost nothing, above all through the gift of our lives, the Risen Christ desires that both fire and Spirit be made perceptible in us."
A present-day expression of the desert tradition, it is a book steeped in prayer and waiting. Acknowledging the darkness without becoming overwhelmed, it draws the reader away from the author and towards the “source”, the wellspring of our joy.
"If we could only realize the simplicity of faith that Christ, risen from the dead, is above all communion...He did not come to start a new religion, but to offer every human being this mystery of a communion in his Body, his Church."
