My wife and I liked this book so much we have bought two copies, we expect to wear the first copy out from referring to it. This is an amazingly thorough history of not just Deadwood but Lead and Spearfish as well. The one problem with many histories of the region is they only focus on that initial goldrush period from roughly 1876 to 1879, this book runs up to the centennial year of 1976. What you see in reading it is how the region evolved from it's 'wild west' beginnings to a community largely revolving around the gold mining industry of the time. I literally treat this book like a reference book than a narrative history. This is the book I often come to when I have questions about the early history of Deadwood or the northern Black Hills.
