*BEWARE* *Light Spoilers*

My Immortal Assassin is the third book in the My Immortals series but the fourth book I've read in the series.

I enjoyed My Immortal Assassin but it is not one of my favorites in this series. I'm not exactly sure why but this one didn't really resonate with me - and I'm going to put it down to not being 100% in love with the characters.

I do want to note that while My Immortal Assassin is not my favorite in this series...it is a very important book in the series. I would consider this book a necessity for the complete story arc.

Grey and Durian have both had it hard: Durian was made mageheld and tortured near to death in My Wicked Enemy , including vivisection. Durian survived the vivisection but was kept mageheld until he was severed in My Forbidden Desire . Durian is now free but he's still healing from the torture. Grey was kidnapped by Christophe dit Menart who also killed her sister. Prior to her kidnapping, Grey was a professional ballerina. Christophe dit Menart had Grey kidnapped because of her latent magical ability. Demons are getting scarce and dit Menart wanted to breed his own army of mageheld demons. And Grey was to be the first mother. *shudder*

My Immortal Assassin follows Grey and Durian as they free her from Christophe dit Menart and discover dit Menart's evil schemes.

I am really enjoying the My Immortals series. I can admit that the My Immortals complete story arc as a whole is a lot more interesting to me than (most of) its individual parts. Each book seems to address some cultural wrong in some way and My Immortal Assassin is no different. A lot of the issues discussed in My Immortal Assassin are consent (primary) and power (secondary). dit Menart is a mage of significant power. Originally, the reason dit Menart and other magekind kept demons mageheld was to protect innocent human life. But absolute power corrupts absolutely and dit Menart is (another) extreme example of this. Demons are getting scarce: so many have been made into mageheld slaves and/or ritually killed for power. Instead of being happy about this (the disappearance of demons), the magekind seems to be more interested in creating more demons because demons = power. The ritual killing of demons gives the magekind more power and extends their life. The holding of demons mageheld gives the magekind slaves that physically cannot say no to any given task.

The corruption of the magekind means that the magekind - not the demons - are attacking, abusing and killing innocent humans. The corruption of the magekind means that the demons - not the magekind - are now the ones protecting innocent life. Full circle.

This series. I'm so loving it.

I liked My Immortal Assassin a great deal, it was dark and sexy with intense tension building in the romance and I really liked both of the leads the good demon assassin Durian and the and the woman, Gray, who has escaped her imprisonment by a power hungry mage but who through the final act of a sacrificial victim is human no more. Even though the pair start on uneven footing, I really liked that Gray is strong enough that she truly becomes and equal to Durian who has centuries of experience to draw from.

I also really like the intensity of the emotion that stone cold killer Durian comes to feel for Gray – is it the “mine” which is the keystone of PNR but with the twist that Kin are so connected that others are drawn into the attraction. Jewell however never crosses that line physically keeping the romance one on one but occasionally Jewell does bring a mental voyeur along for the ride. But while she does walk the edge of kink for the most part, the romance does cross over into territory which may make some readers uncomfortable, since demons are irresistibly drawn to humans, and though it is forbidden without permission, they are only fertile when they shift into their natural form and the urge to shift is strong.

A newbie could read MY Immortal Assassin since the heroine, Gray, gives a good initial summary about this world of mages and demons when she tells Durian what she ‘knows’ about demons and there is a glossary to clear up terms. There are two other books in the series and one more coming soon.

re-read on April 19th, 2015. Again, I stand by my review.

If you are reading My Immortal Assassin you are (probably) already a fan of this series. Then you already know how good the world-building is and that this is a PNR with a darker UF edge.

If you are not a fan, you should start from the first to fully appreciate it. It's not necessary, I think you could read this and get an idea. But you can understand a lot more and, above all, you will like My Immortal Assassin more. :)

Both hero and heroine are survivors: strong, tough, somewhat bitter. Contrary to Xia's story that really was too fast to be fully believable, here the romance has a very slow pace. And contrast beautifully with the action which was very fast.

If I have to find a problem, I'll point to the heroine's past captivity. Given how harsh and cruel the experience was, I think it should have impacted her more. We get her thirst of revenge, but it isn't that strong (she surrenders it quickly during Durian and Nicodemus' argument). We do get a glimpse of it, but I fear it's not enough... .

I agree with Naysa, it's the best this far.

It's more of a 3.5 or maybe 3.75.

I won this book from a giveaway over at oddshots, picking the third book in the series, despite not having read the first two, because I had the impression that I would love this couple. And I was not disappointed.

***spoiler alert***

I love a strong female lead. The last heroine with a (former) dancing career made me want to wring her neck because she was such a whiny, little...But Grayson? Grayson kicks butt. Probably quite literally if the need arises. I started to like her when she faced off Durian when they first met, and I seriously loved her when she protected him from the mageheld sent after them. I liked that she didn't back down, no matter what they threw at her, no matter that she was scared or creeped out by some of the things she had to go through, that she was able to held her own despite the trauma she suffered. And I also liked that she didn't take stupid risks. She screwed up occasionally, but she was more focused on fixing her mistakes than whining about them. That's a heroine I can seriously get behind.

I had my problems with Durian at times. He's very gentlemanly, but then he goes and binds Grayson with an oath of fealty that forces her to protect him with her life, at a time when he doesn't think she's able to protect him at all. In other words, if anyone had attacked them before Grayson got some training, she'd be killed in a useless attempt to protect someone who's more capable of doing that himself. So not gentlemanly at all.
But on the other hand, it was really sweet to watch him fall in love with Grayson. While there was instant lust (which I don't like that much, but I liked that there was a good explanation behind it), there wasn't instant love. Durian is almost stereotypical prim and proper, while Grayson tends more toward the chaotic, wild and rebellious. What I really liked about their relationship was that their personalities weren't changed to fit each other. Durian wasn't suddenly happy with Gray's choice of clothing, but started to like the fact that he didn't like it. Neither did Gray get all meek and agreeable, but rather shifted her priorities from killing Christophe to protecting Durian.

I'm not a romance reader. Give me some sappy love story, and I'm bored out of my mind within minutes. What makes me read paranormal romance books is the setting, interesting worldbuilding and the characters, and this book had plenty of all three. I loved the idea of demons and mages at war, and that you couldn't just side with one faction and declare the others evil. Fiends (the demons) might have once been a serious threat to humanity, but the mages who fought them got a great deal of power from enslaving and murdering them. One of the mages, Leonidas, sums the situation up pretty neatly: "What world do we live in when the demonkind have begun to protect humans from the magekind? The time for change is long past."

The story left me with lots of intriguing questions, and I really hope we get to read Kynan Aijan's story. Because, wow.

I'm definitely going to read the other books in this series.

Carolyn Jewel has been a guilty pleasure of mine for several years. She was one of the first paranormal authors that I ever read and helped introduce me to the genre. I was lucky to have started with her. This is the third installment of the Witch series and it doesn't disappoint. I really enjoyed the interplay between Gray and Durian. It is a real pleasure to watch the love between them develop and grow. There are some real page turning moments that are action packed.

Grayson first meets the smartly dressed, calm but deadly, Fiend when he foils her assassin attempt on the man who wronged her. Gray, is pissed to say the least. The Mage she wants dead not only killed her sister but stole Grey and bonded her to one of his mageheld with the plan to farm babies. However, as it happens, when that Mage killed the Fiend Gray was bonded to, the Fiends essence went into Gray not the Mage. Turning her from a normal human to a powerful weapon. And she desperately wants to use those powers to hill him but this infuriating Fiend is standing in her way.

Durian was once Mageheld but he’s free now and sworn loyalty to the Warlord Nicodemus. That fealty ensures that despite Durian’s hatred of Mages, he will stop any attempts to kill them. This strange female included. When he finds out how exactly she came to possess the soul of a Fiend, he realizes that she’s not at fault and is in danger. So, he makes her swear fealty to him. And in doing so, gains himself not only a powerful and deadly weapon with absolute loyalty to him, but also a companion whom he very quickly falls in love with.

Again, I was enraptured with this series. It’s a lovely feeling to go into a new book and know deep down that it’s not going to disappoint. Well… I have to say that this book wasn’t as fantastic as the first two in the series and it did sort of lose steam towards the end. HOWEVER, I still very much enjoyed it.

Grayson was a badass character and for a female, she was one of the strongest warriors I have ever read about. She could definitely handle herself. To the point that Durian, the badass Fiend, didn’t really do a lot of fighting. Must have saved him a ton of money when not ruining his fancy suits! I liked their dynamic a lot. The woman being essentially the bodyguard to the assassin. They had a true and deep bond that never wavered and perhaps that was what I found a tad bit lacking. I wanted more drama between them but they were devoted to each other almost from the jump and that didn’t change throughout the story.

Sad to think there’s only one more book in this series!

Enjoyable reading experience. I have not read the other books in this series, this is the third and stands on its own. The action keeps moving and keeps the reader engaged. The characters are likeable and unforgettable.
I'm looking forward to reading the rest of Gray and Durian's story.

I've been a big fan of Carolyn Jewel's books since reading, Scandal (see review), one of my Top 5 historical romances. Since then, her My series has become one of my Top 5 paranormal romances. It's been a long wait for Durian's story (the previous My Forbidden Desire was released May 2009), and I was really happy when the author offered to send an early copy of My Immortal Assassin to me.

One of the things I really enjoy about this series is the originality of the world. The demons (known as the kin, among themselves) are engaged in a struggle with the magekind. Dark mages use enslaved demons to provide power and as coerced minions. Witches, too, often get caught in the crossfire, becoming pawns for the dark mages.

Over the course of the previous 2 books of the series, the leader of the kin, Nicodemus, has brokered a tenuous détente between the mages and demon kin (aka fiends). It's amidst this precarious cease in overt hostilities, that the assassin Durian encounters Gray, a witch whose life was torn apart by a dark mage.

Gray has been indelibly changed, transformed into something "other" as a result of the mage's failed power grab attempt, and now she is determined to exact revenge upon him. Durian is sworn to uphold the peace agreement, but is drawn to Gray, and promises to help her learn how to control her new powers, if she will bind herself to him.

This is a lot more set up to a book review than I usually do (I usually prefer to use the book description to do it), but the series story arc, and as a result, the book's plot is a very complex one. There's a lot of "meat" to the story, and that's one of the reasons I really love this series. My one regret about My Immortal Assassin is that I didn't re-read the previous 2 books to refresh my memory of the series details. (Something I like to do with some series.) I'd really recommend reading this series in order, if you haven't already read the first 2 books.

One of the things that made My Immortal Assassin a stand out in the series for me is the relationship between Gray and Durian. More than any other book in the series, there is a give and take to their relationship that is really refreshing. While Grey has "submitted" (not in a D/s way, but in a magical way) by binding herself to him, rather than being subservient to him, she is pledged to protect him, and becomes his bodyguard. As Gray increasingly comes into her power, she assumes a more protective role toward Durian that male heroes more typically take on. I really liked this shift in traditional power dynamics.

And, despite this reversal, Durian is as bad-ass as ever, struggling with his increasingly protective feeling towards Gray, while relishing her growing abilities and her desire to protect him. He sees her protection of him and it affects him in a way that it new to the usually cold and detached assassin. Gray's and Durian's chemistry is great, and they both feed so much from this dynamic.

I really enjoyed the direction the larger story arc took as well, and where the series will go in the next book, My Dangerous Pleasure (to be released June 2011). The introduction of the mage Leonidas is showing a more complex image of the mages, and should complicate the storyline nicely.

Also, I'm chomping at the bit for Kynan's story and Iskander's story, as well as hoping for more about Gray's sister, Emily.

My opinion: Ok to start out I'll give you a little insight into the "beings" in this book. First there are demons (no explanation needed really there). Fiends are a subspecies of demon. A mage is a male who practices magic. Magekind refers to people who practice magic. There are also those called Mageheld, who are fiends (or other demons) who are basically enslaved by the magekind. Also notable in this book are warlords, fiends who have other fiends that are loyal to them.
Grayson Spencer is determined to kill the mage, Christophe dit Menart, the man who ruined her life. She lost her sister and Tigran, who was mageheld to Christophe but transferred his magic to her at the moment of his death to make sure she survived. Their deal was that she was to destroy Christophe by any means necessary. Durian is an assassin who swore fealty to Nickodemus, a powerful warlord. He stops Gray from killing Christophe (there is a certain treaty present and Durian has swore to protect the mages from harm) and knows that he should kill her. But he just can't bring himself to do it. He doesn't like Christophe any more than she does, however he has to have a sanction from Nickodemus to be able to do anything about it. So until Christophe screws up and they can get proof, they can't do anything to him. Gray and Durian form an unlikely alliance, as he tries to help her harness her new magic powers and learn how to fight. As they work together, their passion for each other rises. Christophe is determined to get Gray back; she stole some of his magic when he killed Tigran and he wants it back. Will Durian be able to protect Gray, or will their feelings for each other make them both vulnerable.

It is so hard to explain this book, there are a lot of details that would take too long to go into, you just have to go read the book because it is awesome! I was worried when I started reading this book because it is #3 in a series, but luckily it stands alone just fine! Gray is one tough cookie, she has been through a lot. But there isn't anything she won't do to get revenge against Christophe. Durian sounds smoking hot, and right away she has trouble resisting him (who wouldn't?). Some of the things he asked of her, such as swearing an oath to him and becoming blood twins I thought she would rebel against because she wouldn't want anyone to control her, but I think she figures she doesn't have anything to lose. Plus I think somehow she knew she could trust Durian; he was like the lesser of two evils. There are a lot of other characters in this book, it kind of reminds me of the Demonica and Black Dagger Brotherhood series; each book follows a different characters journey. I like reading series like this because they also follow characters from past books as well, so you can find out what happens to them. I definitely want to read books 1 and 2, and look forward to the next book coming out! If you liked those other series I mentioned, then definitely check these books out. You won't be disappointed!

Grayson was just a normal human until Christophe dit Menart took her and planned to breed her with one of his bonded demons. But things didn't go as Christophe planned. Grayson is able to escape the powerful mage with powers of her own that she plans to use to take her revenge. Before Grayson could do this she is stopped by Durian, a deadly demon assassin, who understands what Grayson has been through. He has agreed to take her in and teach her how to use her new powers. The desire that quickly develops between Durian and Grayson is all consuming and threatens Durian's loyalty to the warlord he is sworn to.

I like Grayson because she is a survivor who doesn't want to hide from what happened but use it as motivation in her training that will lead to getting back at the person who ruined her life. She is intelligent and a quick learner who doesn't want to be coddled because others see her as a victim. Durian does try to hold back on a few occasions with Grayson but she is having none of that. Durian respects Grayson and admires her strength. She is a complete stranger to him but he still takes her in and teaches her about her newly acquired magic. He is a really great teacher and he in turn learns a few things from Grayson. The relationship between the two is not just about sex. They really get into each others minds and make a connection that is far beyond physical.

In Carolyn Jewel's My Immortal series there are mages who think all demons are evil and seek their end and there are the demonkind who aren't all really that bad who are there to stop the magekind from their own despicable deeds. There are also witches and forms of slavery involved. In My Immortal Assassin the story continues and this time it is Christophe who must be stopped before more innocents are hurt. Grayson and Durian are a powerful and sensual pair. If you go by the physical description of Christophe you wouldn't think he was much of a threat but in reality he is vial and viscous and you hope a good ass kicking is coming his way. The way Grayson comes is given her powers pulls at your heart and the scenes with Durian and her where there were no walls between them were my favorite. I liked learning more about the importance and meanings of the alliances formed in this war of power. This series is for those who like some romance to go with a dark story line focused around magic and demons.

When not writing, award-winning author Carolyn Jewel is a Database Administrator. Other titles under historical romances include: Indiscreet, Scandal, The Spare, Lord Ruin, Passion's Song and Stolen Love. Other titles under paranormal romance include: A Darker Crimson, My Wicked Enemy, My Forbidden Desire, and My Dangerous Pleasure (coming June 2011). Carolyn resides in northern California with her son, three cats, a border collie, several chickens, and some sheep.

Anna "Gray" Spencer is determined to destroy the mage who ruined her life. But when her first attempt fails, Gray is now forced to seek help from a feared demon and trained assassin, Durian. Her new magic is barely under control, and she has not adjusted to being thrown from the human world into the demon realm. But she'll do whatever it takes to seek revenge on Christophe dit Menart, even if it means surrendering to a fiend whose very presence screams sex. Except Durian is sworn to protect all mages, and failing means upsetting the peace among humans, demons, and mages. He agrees to help Gray if she submits to his control. As Gray's powers intensify, so does the hunger between them. But the dark mage has secrets about Gray's past, and when he makes a play for her, Gray and Durian must become one or Christophe will end them both.

I thoroughly enjoyed one of the other books in this series, My Forbidden Desire, when I reviewed it, and I was very much looking forward to this one. Though part of a series, these books are stand alone. The author also has a glossary of sorts on all the terminology used to define her world.

I wasn't let down by this book. This whole series has a wicked, captivating punch to it. Not only are we escaping to a paranormal world, but the human emotions and backgrounds add a seriously powerful undertone of sadness. It makes the books hard to put down. Paranormal is difficult to write, and I have to bow down to any author able to make the unimaginable seem real. The secondary characters, both from previous books and upcoming releases, really added nicely to the storyline. Most impressive was the heroine, Gray, who was not the usual bad ass, beautiful woman we tend to see. Her flaws and insecurities made me root for her. Highly recommended.

Anna Grayson Spencer, now known as just Gray, is seeking revenge on the mage who ruined her life and killed her sister. While attempting to murder the mage responsible, she is intercepted by Durian. Durian is an assassin who works for a powerful warlord. Durian takes Gray in and in return she swears fealty to him. They begin to find themselves the target of attacks, and set out to find who is responsible. The attraction between them grows as the action builds, and Durian discovers he might be falling for the girl he initially deemed not his type.

My Immortal Assassin takes readers into a very complex world. The author does provide a glossary in the front which I referenced on more than one occasion. While I don’t think you must read these in order, I do think it would give readers a clearer take on the magic and characters the series contains. Even with moments of confusion over the terminology, I still really liked this one. Solid writing with loads of action.

The characters were strong and well developed. Gray was a spunky female heroine even though she had faced many tough situations in her recent past. Durian was the classic damaged hero that I’ve come to love so much. I loved watching the characters overcome not only present obstacles, but also past ones that were haunting them. I also enjoyed how well the main characters complimented each other. Gray’s sense of humor started to bring out a side of Durian that I’m not even sure he knew he had. Another huge win with me was the lack of angst in the relationship between Durian and Gray. The typical power struggle that seems to be present in so many romance novels wasn’t there. The characters trusted each other, and were willing to take a step back when the other advised it was best. While I admit angst is good for building the sexual tension, the lack of conflict between these two main characters definitely didn’t have a negative effect. It was present and intense.

This book does contain some dark moments, but Gray’s sarcastic wit does an excellent job of lightening the mood. I’m really excited to backtrack and read the first two books of this series, and continue with the next.

I’m stealing the blurb for this one, because honestly, this world confuses me. I found myself rereading numerous pages and the glossary, trying to cement in my head the difference between mageheld, magekind, fiend and Kin. There is a glossary at the beginning which definitely helped me out but at the same time, I have to say it felt a little bit like too much work to read this book. Maybe it is just me! I don’t know.

But don’t get me wrong. Although I never fully connected with the world building, I did enjoy this book. I really think the heroine, Grayson or Gray is really well done. When we first meet her, she doesn’t know nor trust Durian and she has that “fuck you” attitude that I totally bought into. She works the spunk, and is eccentric and eclectic. I love that while at first she doesn’t trust Durian at all, she is smart enough to realize that her chances of survival are best placed with him – and she doesn’t fight it. She knows absorbing magic from the man Christophe killed (her former lover) is out of control inside herself and she wants to learn how to better herself. So while she is very independent and a bit sassy, she is also willing to depend on others, and I love that in a heroine.

Durian is sworn to the warlord Nikodemus. He is their assassin and is proud of the job that he does. In this world, Durian is sworn not to harm other magekind, even though at some points it is obvious some other magekind have committed sins. I enjoyed that the males in this book, don’t necessarily have that brotherly camaraderie, – their relationships take on a very interesting tone. Not always trustworthy, yet there are a few scenes with Durian, Gray and some others that are very intense. The villain is done well with a very creepy tone who is constantly plotting for more power.

Like I said above, it was hard for me to absorb the world in this book, but I did enjoy reading it. I think this can be read as a stand alone.

My Immortal Assassin by Carolyn Jewel
Paranormal Romance – Jan. 3rd, 2010
4 stars

My Immortal Assassin by Carolyn Jewel is a paranormal romance that features a heroine named, Anna Grayson Spencer. Gray is bent on revenge but must make a deal with the devil or in this case a demon.

Gray has escaped from Christophe dit Menart and is seeking Nikodemus, the Demon Warlord of the free fiends. She is unprepared for the changes when she was endowed with magic. She seeks vengeance against the magekind who sacrificed her lover Tigran and murdered her sister. Unfortunately, she knows nothing of the gifts Titgran gave her and knows she needs help, to learn how to use them if she plan to get her revenge on Christophe.

She finds unlikely aid with Durian, a demon assassin. Durian agrees to teach her how to manage Tigran’s magic. But he also has a deeper interest in Grayson Spencer. He recognizes how her DNA has been manipulated. Humanioid, magekind and fiend have been blended to change her into a being with strong powers. Powers that she cannot control. And when she blasts him and he is able to read her he is troubled by her emotional memories. But Gray is a loose cannon. Although Durian agrees that Christophe needs to die, he is torn between keeping the fragile peace even if it means killing her.

My Immoral Assassin by Carolyn Jewel is a fast paced, suspense novel that is richly detailed. Just when I thought I had figured it out, the author surprised me again and again. I enjoyed how the author kept me on my toes. The suspense kept building until Gray makes her ultimate sacrifice to bring down Christophe.

Included in the book are other characters that add to the story and made it all the more fascinating. If you love hot love, intrigue and a good mystery then this is the book for you.

I have to say, I love connecting with other authors on Twitter. Ms. Jewel was kind enough to send out some of her books to eager readers via a Twitter giveaway. I anxiously waited by the mailbox for my package! I've read both My Immortal Assassin, and My Dangerous Pleasure.

I need to rewind and get the first two books of this series. I didn't realize that there were other books until I was well into this one, and I wasn't about to stop.=)That is a pet peeve of mine (not to begin with the first book of a series), but I wasn't lost about the other characters in the book.

THERE MIGHT BE SPOILERS!

I am a brutally honest person. So here's what I have to say. I have read MANY paranormal books. It was hard for me to get into this book at first. My first apprehension was the glossary in the beginning of the book. That made me a little apprehensive. If not for that glossary I would have been lost for sure. (DUH! it was the third book) I kept getting the terms changed around.

Durian was a dark and mysterious character, very appropriate for an assassin. Gray was feisty and broken, they were a very good fit. I found her description of making love to a demon particularly disturbing. For some reason the black teeth keep flashing in my mind. It gave me the heebie-geebies. It was easy for me to picture the scene in my head, and honestly it creeped me out! LOL But that's what makes this book interesting and different. In the end, the writing was superb. I enjoyed being taken on their journey.

Would I read it again...most definitely. Especially now that I understand the terms much better. Should you download it on Kindle or buy the book...yes, you should.

MY IMMORTAL ASSASSIN by Carolyn Jewel
Book #3 in the Witches Series
01/11 - Grand Central Publishing - Mass Market Paperback, 384 pages

Worlds collide, hearts are won over and love dances onto the pages

Anna Grayson Spencer saw life in a certain manner until someone she loved died and willed his magic to her. Gray went from human to magekind and needed someone to help her learn how to deal with this new found life. The man for the job is Durian a warlord’s assassin set up to help Gray not only by helping her embrace the magic but learn to use it against the forces of evil trying to kill off the human race but first she has to swear fealty to him – seriously?

Gray has lost so much in her life and walked away from her family burying secrets about herself so deep even she forgot about them, but Durian is going to open and heal those wounds and keep her safe especially from herself.

The more time Gray spends with Durian the more drawn she is to him and realizes that he is the missing piece she has been searching for. Their voyage involves fighting the darker side but even that moves them closer together as their two souls become one.

What an engaging story and such wonderful characters that keep the excitement moving from page to page you will not want this book to end. The storyline is easy to follow and well laid out which for some is a challenge with this genre. A great author knows how to tell a story everyone can follow and Ms. Jewel has done just that.

Durian is a fiend that was a slave to a mage, until he was freed by Alexandrina and Xia. He is a warlord that owes his fealty to Nikodemus, and the peace that he is working on between the mages and the fiends.

Gray wants only to kill the mage that took away her life, and killed her sister. She is also dealing with all the new magic flowing thru her.

What neither of the expected was each other and the feelings that they have for each other.

One of the things that I like best about Carolyn’s books this one included is that for most of the book the hero and heroine are completely alone. It is all them, dealing with what each other is and coming to terms with the feelings that they have for each other. There are other characters in the book, because a book with just a hero and heroine would be rather boring, but the way that she combines the two makes you want to keep coming back for more.

If you like a great paranormal story with a great romance and excellent characters than I recommend picking up this series. I do have to say that this is one series that does need to be read in order or you will feel lost about what is going on with the mages and fiends.

My Immortal Assassin is book #3 in Caroln Jewel's Witches series. It is always good to read series books in order however this book can be read as a stand alone book. I was able to move threw the book with out needing to get the other two books to figure out what was going on in book three.

I fell in love with the characters from the start and was pulling for them all the way to the end. The author does a wonderful job with all the character descriptions. My favorite romance books are paranormal romance and this one has held up to all my expectations. I would recommend this read to anyone who loves romance and paranormal romance books. I rate this book 4 stars.

I enjoyed this book but I’ll admit, I was a little confused by the world building. I had read the previous novel, My Forbidden Desire, but I guess it was so long ago I didn’t remember much. Typically after a few chapters I can get the gist of what is going on or jump start my brain to remember but I don’t know if it ever really clicked with that story. That said, I think this tells me that this story would have been more enjoyable if I read the series closer together. I say this because I enjoyed the heroine, Gray. I liked the fight she had in her and that she recognized that with the new powers she had in her, she needed help. She didn’t have any TSTL moments and I respected her for it. I loved that she turned to Durian for help because he is one sexy, alpha man. They had some great chemistry and even though they had some initial trust and communication issues to work through, they made a great combination. Fun read, I’d be intrigued by the rest of the series but I think I’d need a quick reminder of the world before I start the next.

There is definitely heat but a lot of teasing until you reach the second half of the book)

From page one you are plunged into a world of Kin and Mages. Kin are powerful demons who use their magic to transform themselves into beautiful beings that closely resemble humans, while Mages are powerful wizards whose secret long term goal is to rid the world of free Kin.

Grayson Spencer, a human, is forced to choose sides when a evil Mage turns her life upside down. In an attempt to kill him she comes face to face with Durian, an assassin, a Kin. Unable to let Gray complete her mission due to a treaty the warlord he is bound to made with the Mage she wants to kill, Durian works with Gray to find another means for her revenge while trying not to fall in love.

Immortal Assassin is a great start to a new series. It moves quickly and is a refreshing change from the usual paranormal subjects of vampires and shifters. The characters are interesting and easy to follow. I would definitely pick up the next book in the series.

I heard recently this was part of a series. I had no idea, and frankly after reading the book, it doesn't matter. You can read it as a stand alone. I didn't feel lost at all.
I really like Durian and Gray, even if she had really bad fashion sense. I was rooting for them right off the bat. Their chemistry is pretty intense for the lack of sex in the book.
Don't go thinking there wasn't any sex, it just wasn't the focus of the story. Romance or not. It was mostly paranormal fiction for me.
The one thing I wasn't crazy about was the beginning. The very beginning, in the prologue, the author uses a 15th century term. You see more of this throughout the book. The problem is, when a chick is decked out like a punk rocker, and the demon-god man is dressing in Armani fashions, they're not likely in that time frame. Era-wise, I don't think the author had all that figured out. That's just me, and the best part is, it didn't ruin the book.
A lot of women are going to love this one!

My Immortal Assassin is book 3 in Jewel's witches UF series. It's Durian's story, and introduces some new characters, including the heroine, Gray.

I find Jewel's witches series particularly interesting, because her world and the inter-workings of the kin (or demons) are based on feudal-like alliances and hierarchy, as well as a notable bi-sexual & polyamorous undertones. I find it notable, not because I think it's bad, but rather because it is so unusual to find it so openly explored in mainstream romance, and because Jewel handles the topic with a deft hand.

The theme of this story seems to be consent --beyond the slavery issues of the kin and magekind. It explores consent of allegiance and intimacy as Durian and Gray grow to know and love each other.

Another fine addition to the series.

I picked this one up without the intent of reading it right away (especially since it was 3rd in a series). However, I was immediately drawn into the story and had a hard time putting it down.

I love the way the story played out and I'm glad it had a fairly happy ending.

Gray and Durian worked very well together. Gray is a very strong character and I hope to read about them in future books.

I'm looking forward to reading the 1st to books in the series and picking up after this one. I do hope that Gray's sister can be healed and I hope she finds a great "demon" to take care of her.

So, if you like a story with action, suspense and a great touch of romance then this is a book to read. (And apparently, it isn't a problem to read them out of sequence.)

This was a good, solid installment in the series that I enjoy as much as the first. This book had some strong development of the long term series plot that I was glad to see and really appreciated. These characters (Durian and Grey) were interesting and I really liked Grey. No moments of wanting to slap her. :)

Another asset to the story was that fact that all the scenes with the couples from past books were necessary as opposed to just throwing them in so you can say, "Hi!" to characters you know. There were a few scenes with other characters thrown in to give you hints about the future, but none were overdone. Overall, an enjoyable read.

I love this world and the voice @cjewel uses. I found myself pausing midway through the story wondering why I was reading it. Yet the main character, as difficult as I found her to really like let alone her "hero", continued to compel me to find her ending, happy or otherwise. The hints of depth given to other characters in the world kept me focused. In the forefront of my mind was Iskander, and that I needed to see how this part of the world developed to truly appreciate what he would face in the next novel.

Definitely worth reading, if you love this series.
