"It’s going to be a complicated Valentine’s Day.”

Such a cute read.Since I'm super sick and lying in bed for the past four days, this book managed to make me laugh and relax.Just what I needed.

description

The characters are super adorably awkward and the chemistry between Elyse and Patrick is undoubtedly amazing. I love how the author portrayed a fantastic female friendship in this book – Elyse and Dina are very different but together they make a great duo.Patrick…ah,I love Patrick. He is such an amazing guy and those pen-buying/driving scenes killed me.His grandpa is the best supporting character in this book, let’s be real – he is so funny and both he and Elyse’s mom definitely ship Elyse and Patrick haha. They were doomed from the very beginning! The “panda” party was both awkward and wonderful.I really enjoyed reading about these characters and that epilogue will be the death of me.Dina deserves her happy ending too.♥

Great, quick and funny, funny read!

First impression:
I must tell you that I had a horrible day .. so when I started reading this book I just didn't know that it was about to change my day..
Thank you Anna H. for bringing my smile back, and thank you for this story that I like so much.. It's perfect for me: funny, with a lot of sarcasm and great characters, not to mention the fact that it's about a girl that can't drive - I can totally relate to that ;)) ... So I love it so far, and I am so glad that I decided to read it today. This book completely made my day :D

Later Edit:
There are few books that made me laugh this much, and there are not many characters that I liked as much as I did with these ones. One word: FUN!

Elyse was such a nice girl, with all her sarcasm and her (bad)luck. Even if a lot of things were wrong in her life, she still had a positive thinking in some way. She was a good friend, had a great relationship with her mother, and cared a lot about some people in her life. The only problem is that the men in her life (dad, ex-boyfriend) were jerks and she lost her faith in finding a good guy .. for her.
So, we have problem one - she doesn't let boys in her heart/life anymore (even if some would love to be a part of her life/heart and would do anything to deserve it)

Also, Dina, her best friend was a really nice character, even if she was a bit naive and silly. You know, you don't see often good (realistic and nice) relationships between friends in books... and these two girls were really good friends and you could feel this - not only hear it from the main character - and they cared about each other a lot.
This brings us to problem number two: Elyse knows that Dina has to get over her obsession about her jerk ex-boyfriend (because we have this understandment that all ex-boyfriends are jerks, duuh) and find a nice guy to be with.. and she kind of thinks that this 'customer' Patrick... the sweet, funny, kind, amazing Patrick... is the right guy for Dina. Or is he?

In fact Patrick works in the same place, and lives next door to Elyse, and is kind of her driving instructor (and drives her crazy sometimes :p) and Elyse kind of starts to like him .. a lot - what were the odds, huh? And he is amazingly-and-annoyingly nice to her, always there for her, not pushing at all, but waiting for her to figure out that he is that 2% of the men kind and he even sais once that he likes her, but Elyse already got Dina to be interested in him and she wouldn't want to break her heart (like her ex-best friend did to her once), not after all that happened with Damien, Dina's ex.

So things are and get more complicated and as Elyse sais about this kind of romances (talking about a movie): " boy meets the girl, they fall in love but - oh - they can't possibly be together because of some terrible but really very easy-to-resolve misunderstanding [...] "

Now, I know the subject is not new, we've seen this before, what makes this book amazing is how funny it is. I kept laughing all the time, and the writing is really good too, and the conversation is realistic and fun to read, and the story is just sweet... I could have read this near Valentine ;))

I'll tell you this:
I loved Patrick (even if he really was too good to be true, but who cares, right? It's Valentine - every guy should be too good to be true :P) and I loved the moments with Patrick and Elyse (some cute, some sweet, some funny, some hilarious!), and I could totally understand why Elyse tried to make Dina like Patrick, and how she fell for him after that, and why it broke her heart not to be with him because the plot was well constructed (her reasons were expressed in some realistic way - I could feel her struggle, and I understood), and I loved the driving lessons, and the pen-buying-scenes, and the cookies, and Japanese bush, and the furnace problem, and -oh - the song, the stupid-cupid, the parking-cake .. Oh well, you think I'm talking nonsense of course, but you will love all these too :p

So, yeah, I loved it.. it is not profound and it will not change your life in any way (even if it changed my day) ... but it's so sweet and funny.. so the romantic people like me will love it :D

Sometimes the greatest gift you can give someone is to accept whatever it is they've got to offer you.

Elyse Phillips doesn't particularly care for Valentines day, since the heartbreak a year ago. She sworn off dating and the whole event all together. But, it's not to easy to avoid when she works at a card shop surrounded by sparkly mushy cards and singing (annoying) cupid dolls. Soon enough she meets charming-Mr.pen-obsessed Patrick Conner who works at the mall, finds out she's his new neighbor and her mom assigned him as her driving instructor. Oh, and it seems like he's got the hots for her best friend.
It's a good thing she sworn off guys...right?

Rhymes with Cupid is a really great book about the bitter and cynical side of love. Valentines day. And how love can slowly heal a broken heart when you least expect it.
I really enjoyed this book, it's quirky, cute, funny and made me smile.

Elyse is a very conflicting character, but I still found myself being about to relate.
When you get a broken heart you put up walls around yourself so it wont happen again. Time after time she would push Patrick away and eventually it started to get upsetting to witness. Don't get me wrong here, I liked her a lot, she's a great friend to Dina and just wants good things for her mom, but when it comes to herself, she shuts down and has a real issue with just accepting help when she needs it. Her attitude is justified, but it wasn't always easy to read. I'm thrilled that she finally got the right perspective at the end.
Now, Patrick...how do I describe him? You know those really nice guys who go out of there way to show you that they care? They pretty much would do anything for you even if it means going out of there comfort zone to do so? Well, that our Patrick. Some may be annoyed with the kind of guy who goes that extra mile, who seems to good, to sweet, to..unreal. But I thought he was just too adorable for words. Funny, genuine, generous, sincere, and an absolute sweetheart.
If more guys were like him, the world would be a brighter place.
Just, don't ever ask him to teach you how to parallel park...just saying;)

Dina was another character that I also found adorable, she has a way about her that I could only describe as this actor and if anyone knows her then knows that she has one of the most bubbly voices around. Well, that's Dina to me. Save the animals, overly sweet, optimistic, slightly flighty and not a single bad bone in her body. She's also one of the better best friends I've ever read.

Canadian author, Anna Humphrey writing is very well done, but unfortunately I found it a tad unevenly paced. The initial storyline is wonderful and it has some great dialog and fun and funny moments which I thought she total nailed, but there were some scenes that would drag on a little to long with a little to much detail. Also, the usage of the last names ( Matt Love) repeated was semi-annoying, but that's just me being picky. Still, the writing is good and it's an awesome start for a debut novel.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It's a wonderful light and heartwarming story perfect if your looking for a fun Valentine read.
I'm looking forward to seeing what Humphrey comes up with next!

Well done!

Valentine's Day might be over, but if you're looking for a little romance, then Rhymes with Cupid might be just the heart-shaped chocolate you need.

Elyse Phillips hates Valentine's Day and you can only imagine how that makes her feel trudging to work everyday to the mall gift/ card store. I mean, how can she possibly escape all of the Valentine's Day cards, heart-shaped chocolates, and that annoying singing cupid doll every customer wants to push? (on a side note: you don't have a heart if you don't feel for those workers who are forced to listen to those annoying dolls day in and day out!).

After what happened with her last boyfriend, the last thing she needs right now is another relationship. But when a cute boy walks into the store and her mom pushes her to be friends with the boy next door, things will never quite be the same.

This is such a fun, light-hearted read with such an intriguing main character. Girls will relate to Elyse as she makes her way through what Pat Benatar likes to call a battlefield. Elyse is smart, down-to-earth and not to mention humorous. Readers will definitely enjoy the dressing room scene! Too funny!

Another cute little Valentine’s Day read. The main character hates Valentine’s Day after catching her boyfriend cheating on her with her best friend the vday before. She has a job working in a hallmark-esque stationery store where she meets a guy that she decides would be perfect for her best friend. I didn’t like the love interest as much in this one. He was okay, but didn’t seem terribly realistic, especially for a teenage guy. Elyse was likable enough and had some funny inner thoughts. While not a favorite read, I would definitely recommend it for seasonal readers like myself.

Also, I love the title!

~2-2.5/5

[Read more at my blog, Geeky Reading!]

Honestly, this was just a very bland, meh book for me. I was hoping it would be a lot more cute and lighthearted, but maybe I’ve just grown out of these types of books.

The type of book featuring a character who is very not interested in any form of attention, whether from friend or romantic interest, to the point where they’re rude or absent. And the type of character who has sworn off love, is avoiding all person of their sexual preference. I think, at this point, I’d just rather read about a character who wants that, is maybe even looking for it, but is overall open to any form of relationship. Although maybe it was just hard to believe in this book.

So Elyse has sworn off love because her boyfriend, a year ago, cheated on her with her best friend. And then she moves and her new neighbor is a very sweet, nice guy who likes her. But she’s trying to push him off on her friend, to get her friend to stop daydreaming about this boy who is showing absolutely no interest in her, even while she’s getting upset about this.

First off, it annoyed me that Elyse was still upset about her boyfriend who cheated on her, when it’s been a year. That is way too long to hang onto a relationship, that I don’t even think was that long to begin with, without growing even a little bit from it. And then she generalizes that all men are horrible. That just annoyed me.

Plus is bothered me that she was pushing Patrick, the nice sweet boy off on her friend, when it’s obvious that Elyse liked him and that he liked her back. That’s just dumb.

I did like her friend, Dina, who’s a sweet, emotional girl, and a very good, loyal friend. And I did like Patrick. I like nice guys, and personally think that there need to be more of them in books. I really liked Patrick’s grandfather, a really sweet, smart old man with bad hearing. The ending was good, I guess, but extremely predictable.

I don’t know. It was a meh book, I was glad to be finished with it.

It's going to be a complicated Valentine's Day.

My thoughts on it:
The two main characters: Elyse and Patrick.
Elyse meets Patrick one day at work and tries to set him up with her coworker-sappy-panda lover friend Dina who she is trying to help get over her boyfriend.
She soon finds out that Patrick is actually her next door neighbor that her mom has asked to help Elyse get better with driving (she's failed the test 3 times).
It's easy to see that Patrick is trying to get together with Elyse and not Dina. But Elyse is not interested in boys since her ex did the unthinkable.
Will Elyse come to a different conclusion in the end? Will Patrick move on?

It was a really good book. A typical YA romance. You've got the perfect guy and the perfect ending. First person point of view through Elyse's eyes. There were some points that I think could have been better developed and felt that they were just thrown in (her mother- work and coworker). But it is a book that I would recommend, really enjoyable and a holiday read (for those who like to read some holiday books around the holiday times). I really came to love Patrick and Dina.

I would give it a 4 out of 5 stars.

When I first picked up this book, I knew what I was getting myself into. A light-hearted, romantic, corny, cheesy, sugary and cute story that probably wouldn't keep me up all night wondering about the big questions in life. But then, who said that's a bad thing? I won't bore you with the synopsis, since the blurb pretty much says it all, it's not hard to guess what happens in the book. But what I can say is that this is a story about how love finds us when we least expect it. We can build our barriers, we can pretend we don't need love to be happy, but all that doesn't matter when you meet the right person, who is worth the risk of heartbreak. Sure, maybe love and life don't always turn out so well as it does in novels like this, but it doesn't hurt to have a bit of hope and optimism.

So maybe this book isn't exactly as fluffy as it is. Anyone who feels a bit jaded about affairs of the heart should really try Rhymes with Cupid; a sweet read that will definitely bring a smile to your face. Now, where on Earth could my Patrick be?

My rating is a 4.5 out of 5 star because the story was cliche, and I could expect what happened. Even with that in mind, I enjoyed it very much! I would definitely recommend this book to everyone that enjoys clean romance because overall, it is a great story with lots of funny parts.

The title of this story. Oh wow, it’s magnificent and so darn clever! The minute I saw the title, I knew I was going to like this book. But to be honest, it kind of disappointed me. A lot of my friends on Goodreads added this to their “to-read” list, so I made sure to get my hands on a copy as soon as possible.

For one, the entire book was based around a pretty girl. It’d be much of a better story if she wasn’t pretty at all –in fact, quite the opposite. That way, it’d be more understandable why her old boyfriend left her for her best friend. To be completely honest, I still have a hard time believing that guy –her old boyfriend, whose name I forget to remember– could cheat on her so naturally. Surely he’d feel a little guilt after cheating on her. Because no matter how “cliché” you want to make jocks appear to be, they’re still not like that. Everybody is good at heart.

I kind of knew Elyse was going to end up with Patrick the moment I read the prologue. And when he appeared, I’m like, “Oh my gosh, this is so predictable!” And it was. I could predict everything in the book and be right. It was quite annoying, but at the same time, I kind of liked how predictable it was. It just made up for being a light and fun read, which is also kind of cliché with the whole I-don’t-think-I-can-ever-fall-in-love-but-then-I-met-him plot. A bittersweet ending –one where Elyse and Patrick didn’t end up together –would be much better than the all-too-happy ending at last.

Oh. It’d be amazing if the guy who cheated on her came running back to her. It’d be more of a heartbreak disaster thing-o-majik plot. And also, it’d be much more sweeter, because the main character would experience loving and hating a person. With the new guy coming into her life –in this case, it’d be Patrick– she’ll only be experiencing love and nothing else.

The editor did a great job throughout this story. I don’t think I’ve noticed any typos at all. The entire story was quite-well edited, but I hated how the author sometimes didn’t make it clear who was doing what in dialogue.

For example:

“I don’t know how to do this.” He looked up. “What am I supposed to do?”

This wasn’t in the actual book, but if it was, the main character would be the one speaking and the “he” looking up would be Patrick. It’s actually quite confusing to distinguish who is saying/doing what.

The first time I was aware the main character’s name was “Elyse” I snorted. That “y” in there just makes me want to wince, because it looks too girly for my tastes. And it doesn’t help that the main character is a angry, snarky and snappy girl who believes in the language of sarcasm.

Overall, this is one of those cliché EXTREMELY LIGHT books. Read at your own caution and don’t expect something original, because you’re not going to get it.

My Thoughts: As soon as I saw this book up for preorder on amazon, I knew it was my kind of book! It looked so adorable! It sounded adorable and the cover is really cute!

We are introduced to Elyse who has sworn off Valentines Day and boyfriends. Her ex-boyfriend cheated on her with her best friend so she has no reason to even think about being in love again! She won't do it. She never wants to get hurt again. She works at Goodman's Gifts & Stationary which would be a good job except for the fact that she has to stand around selling mushy cards all day. And of course its almost Valentine's Day. She wants to forget the day even exists. The only good thing about working is spending time with her friend and co-worker Dina.

Elyse and her mom even moved to the other side of town just so she doesn't have to run into her ex-boyfriend and best friend. Her new neighbor Patrick starts showing interest in Elyse, she tries to hook him up with Dina. And of course he's also her new driving instructor. So, Elyse finds herself spending more and more time with Patrick and getting to know him and slowly starting to think maybe he is one of the nice guys. But Dina likes him, so what can she really do?

Want to find out what happens between Dina, Patrick, and Elyse? Read the book to find out!

Rhymes With Cupid was a cute book! It was brain candy! Sweet and tasty!

Overall: I really enjoyed it! It was cutesy and fun to read. There wasn't a whole lot of deep thought to it, I think its supposed to be a cute book that makes you go "awwwwww." Loved Patrick. He was such a cutie!

Cover: Love This Cover! I love how he is feeding her, and that ice cream looks so yummy!!! Wonder if there is any in the fringe right now!

What I'd Give It: 4/5 Cupcakes

This book is sweet inside and out! What's sweeter than the ice cream on this cover??? and Patrick...he's such a sweet guy!

Elyse hates Valentine's Day, because a year ago, on that very same day she was betrayed by the two people she loved. She caught her best friend and boyfriend cheating on her! Now, she is working for a gift/card store with her new friend Dina and seriously annoyed by the singing Cupid that every customer seemed to love. After her last relationship, she vowed not to be involved with anyone for a while and decided to focus in school and work. Dina, on the other hand, can't seem to get over her ex-boyfriend. Elyse wants to help her friend to forget her ex, so when a cute guy came in the store, she believe that she just found the perfect distraction for Dina. The cute guy---Patrick have a mind and feelings of his own, and he's on a mission to show Elyse that he's nothing like her ex-boyfriend!

Elyse was a little annoying, however, I understand where she is coming from. I guess if you were betrayed and got hurt, your initial reaction is to protect yourself. You'll be scared to take risks and you tend to push people away. It's also harder to trust and open up to people. That's what Elyse was doing in this story. When she and her mom moved because of financial reasons (this is right after "the break-up"), she never made friends in her new school, aside from Dina. That's why when she noticed Patrick's advances, she immediately shut him out. I just love Patrick. He's too good to be true! He's sweet and thoughtful, and I totally hate Elyse now for having him. LOL!

I liked the story and the characters, the book made me smile despite my sickness. This book is perfect for people who wants to read light-hearted teen romance novels.

Now I'm off to find MY Patrick! =D

‘Rhymes with Cupid’ is probably one of the few fluffy and short reads that made me smile so wide. I read it exactly two times from cover to cover before I realized that I was being incredibly stupid and needed to lay off the poor thing.

Elyse Philips, the protagonist is cynical about love. After her ex-boyfriend jumped on her heart and broke it in a million pieces by cheating on her with her best friend, love isn’t just something she believes in. She works in a gift store with her new friend Dina who - mind you, is sweet as sugar- is moping over her ex-boyfriend. In comes Patrick, the smart, handsome, sweet guy and Elyse is more than excited to play matchmaker.

Oh of course, but sometimes you just don’t get what you wish for eh? *Wink*

Patrick has the hots for our main babe and he has no interest in Dina whatsoever. Oh good god, ain’t that interesting? You bet.

To sum it in one word, Rhymes with Cupid was aggravating. I don’t mean that in a 'I wanna bang my head and tear off the book and have it for dessert' kind of way but more in a 'when when when when when when when is Elyse gonna come to her senses? WHEN?'- kinda way.

Patrick was no less than an angel. Do you have a neighbor who shovels your driveway when it snows? Do you have a neighbor who checks up on you when your mommy bear is on vacation in Mexico? Do you have a neighbor who is gorgeous and writes a song for you to express his feelings? Do you? Huh?

Do you?

‘Rhymes with Cupid’ is cute and hilarious. It's something that will sure make your day better and make you look at the brighter side of things. The ending isn’t overly perfect per-se but we all know who ends up with who. Everyone’s happy happy happy. Weeee! :)

Elyse hates Valentine's Day ever since last year when her ex-boyfriend broke her heart and stole her best friend. Unfortunately for her, she works at a mall store complete with Valentine cards, chocolates, and singing cupid dolls.

When a cute boy comes into the shop, she encourages her friend to flirt with him. Belong long, she realizes that the boy in question is her next-door neighbor and he has a crush...on her.

But Elyse isn't interested in him or any other boy.

The more she pushes Dina and Patrick together, though, the more she notices that something isn't right. Could she be giving love a second chance?

RHYMES WITH CUPID is a cute read and perfect for this time of year. I loved the banter between Elyse and Patrick. Patrick is always getting things wrong, awkward when talking to girls, smart, and very caring. Elyse is still overcoming her grief, blunders her way through several situations, but just wants the best for her friend.

A truly sweet read.

Rhymes with Cupid indeed.

There should be balance, right? YA isn't all dark and twisted; it can be sweet and romantic too. But a certain balance is called for, right? This book tipped that balance toward the too sweet. And at times the silly.

It was basically one of those rom-coms that the protag made fun of:

"...I hated the whole 'boy meets girl, they fall in love but - oh- they can't possibly be together because of some terrible but really easy-to-resolve misunderstanding' plots that always ended happily ever after with a passionate kiss and/or wedding..."

I won't deny that there were moments of me stuffing the pillow over my head to keep from laughing out loud (i.e. the raccoon scene) But the book itself was just cute and funny BUT moments of it (mostly to do with Elyse's over the top reactions) really did rhyme with Cupid.

2.5 for making me laugh :)

I really liked this book. I think it is good for high school girls because it talks about things that they can easily relate to. It was kind of predictable, but still threw enough things at me to make it interesting and exciting. Its a quick easy read so, you should read it!

I would rate this book a 3 out of five stars because although it was about romance which I normally like I just found it a little slow and hard to understand at times. I also did not like how long the chapters were, at least for me they were a bit too long which made it more of a drage to read in my opinion. but all that being said I thought it was still a nice book to read if you like romance and flirty books, it also was a good reading level for me and I am someone who doesn't read a lot so that's saying something. So overall this book was not my favorite but it definitely was not the worst either but in conclusion I would say it's not worth a read as there are much better romance books out there.

Okay, I KNOW! I bought this book like 6 years ago and have been avoiding it since. The title is cringe but...uh? I liked this book? For a YA romance, I didn’t want to punch any character in the face (rare) and I loved how the book never really mentioned school or any clichéd “mean girls.” The kazoo solo (yes, a kazoo solo) and lip gloss and ponytail boys made me slightly gag but overall this was a really nice and fluffy lil book! I’m not mad about it. I wish the title was less dumb, though. I was embarrassed to read this on the train.

Super easy, super fast read but there wasn't anything special about it. I didn't connect with any of the characters and the plot was really flat. Even with that said, I didn't mind reading it. It's just not a book that will stay with me.

It's rather straight forward. No big twists and turns and you know what will happen.
But sometimes it's the predictability that is just what you need to relax and unwind.

The things that stand out the most in this book were its: 1) sweetness 2) cuteness 3) funniness…. basically you can see where I am going with this. It is everything you could hope for a Valentines Day book to be like. It was so nice, adorable, and innocent; I just loved that about it.

Elyse and her mom have been working hard to stay afloat, just the two of them. Even though her mom was absent for most of the book (lucky girl got to go on a vacation to Cancun, Mexico), you can definitely tell that they have a strong relationship. Elyse passes her time alone by working at the gift store, keeping up with her good friend Dina, ignoring her ex-best friend & ex-boyfriend, while also trying to ignore the fact that Valentines Day is right around the corner. However, nothing seems to be going right. The furnace breaks, raccoons attack the house, ex-boyfriend/ex-best friend show up unexpectedly, everyone else around her brings up the dreaded V-day, and the only one there for her through it all is her next-door neighbor/driving instructor, Patrick. Patrick is super cute, funny, some-what nerdy (in a good way), and in Elyse’s opinion, perfect for Dina. Patrick, however, has someone else in mind…her name just might start with an E- and end with a -lyse. The only question is, can Elyse get over the hurt of boys-past to move on to love in the future?

Elyse is a girl after my own heart. She is rough around the edges, a little bit cynical, but deep down she has a heart of gold. She is always looking out for her friends and mom and helps them out regardless of how ridiculous their requests are (panda-themed party… uh no thanks!). Elyse reminds me of myself (and quite a few others I know) a little in that way, always spending too much time taking care of others instead of herself. Dina, Elyse’s good friend is the ideal friend in this book. She is sweet, has her little quirks, and while Elyse may think she is the one taking care of Dina, Dina spends quite a bit of time taking care of Elyse. Also I mentioned Patrick. He is my ideal cute, nice, funny, nerdy guy (gosh the best ones are either taken or fictional!). The fact that Elyse overlooks her own feelings for Patrick because she thinks that her friend likes him, shows you just how great this main character is. The relationship between the main characters and everyone else in this book is so believable. It could have been very well written about yourself or a good friend. Elyse’s resistance to finding love is something we all face one day. The innocence between Elyse and Patrick was probably my favorite characteristic of the whole book. I love Y.A. lit; fiction, historical fiction, contemporary fiction, I love it all. I also love feisty little love scenes, I mean who doesn’t? BUT it was very nice and refreshing to read a Y.A. novel that didn’t rely on steamy love scenes to pique interest in readers.

Rhymes With Cupid is such a cute novel; perfect for those little love story cravings! I really can’t wait to see is next for Anna Humphrey.

2017 Reading Challenge #38: A book set around a holiday other than Christmas
