My newest adventure romance books are The Big Race (a takeoff on The Amazing Race) and Driven Together, a Formula 1 MM romance.

I have been a voracious reader all my life, mostly in mystery, romance, and science fiction/fantasy, though a college degree in English did push a lot of literary works into my list of favorites.

Quick note: sign up for my newsletter at plakcy.substack.com to get free prologues, epilogues and short stories.

I began writing seriously in high school after an inspiring assignment with A Separate Peace by John Knowles. I didn't know I was gay then, but I knew I was longing for an emotional connection with a best friend. That desire shows up across my writing, from romance to mystery to adventure. I am lucky to have found my special person, and I want to inspire readers to make those connections, to one person or a found family.

It took getting an MFA in creative writing to kick-start my career. That's where I honed my technical skills and began to understand what kind of storyteller I am.

I remember reading Freddie the Detective about a very smart pig inspired by Sherlock Holmes. I’ve always believed that dogs make the best detectives. They notice what humans miss — a faint scent, a subtle shift in body language, the hidden treat in your pocket. That belief inspired my Golden Retriever Mysteries, where Rochester helps his human, Steve Levitan, nose out the truth.

My passion is telling stories where community, loyalty, and sometimes love solve problems just as much as clues do. Whether it’s a cozy mystery in Bucks County, a thriller on the streets of Miami, or a romance unfolding under the Mediterranean sun, I want readers to feel the heartbeat of the place and the people.

I write because stories helped me feel less alone growing up, and now I want to give readers that same feeling: a companion, a puzzle, and maybe a laugh.

When I’m not writing, I’m probably walking one of my own goldens, teaching writing, or daydreaming about my next story.
Since then I've written dozens of books, won a couple of treasured awards, and enjoyed the support of readers.

Every place I’ve lived has made its way into my fiction: the rolling hills of Bucks County, the neon heat of Miami, the beaches of Hawaii, the cobbled streets of Europe. I love exploring how communities work — from a café where dogs guide healing, to a fraternity house in South Beach, to a police unit in Honolulu.

My goal is simple: to write stories that feel grounded in real people and real places, but with enough twists, romance, or danger to keep you turning pages late into the night.

I hope you'll visit my website, where you can sign up for my occasional newsletter, and also follow my author page on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/neil.plakcy.

The ending was a little weak in my opinion. The characters were a little more forgiving than I would have been. I can't believe they wouldn't press charges on their attacker after everything he put them through... still liked the story

When I wrote Three Wrong Turns in the Desert, I didn't think of it as the beginning of a series. But I fell in love with Aidan and Liam, and I thought there was a lot I could explore as they begin their lives together.

One of the stories in Surfer Boys introduced me to the island of Djerba, off the Tunisian coast, and I thought that would be a great place to send my buys on their first assignment as bodyguard partners. I enjoyed showing the way Aidan grows into his role as Liam's work partner, and it was also fun to bring in a sexy character who might just threaten the bond they're beginning to create.

This book also began the trend of adding a secondary couple to the story, whose romance Aidan and Liam will aid in developing. I really enjoyed creating the character of Gavin Jones, the British hippie who stumbles into the story.

Fun fact: The working title of the book was Assignment: Djerba, but eventually changed to use the title of the song that Karif writes-- which of course I wrote myself.

Neil Plakcy has done it again; in fact, with Dancing with the Tide, he’s taken Aidan and Liam’s story beyond what I was hoping for. In their first story – Three Wrong Turns in the Desert – I was totally involved as they battled all sorts of odds to find a future together never mind just trying to survive. So to be able to find out what’s new for Aidan and Liam was a treat and a half!

I loved the first book and the wonderful descriptiveness of Neil’s writing and he’s done the same again in Dancing with the Tide; for places that I’ve never been I have an extremely vivid sense of the different-ness, the beauty and even the sense of time standing still. No mean feat that. And not only is the scenery there in my mind’s eye, but so too are the characters.

Aidan and Liam are even, dare I say it, more real and more attractive than the first time I met them. Their personalities mesh very well, but it’s how they are with each other that I love watching the most.

We definitely see things more through Aidan’s eyes, or at least we’re far more aware of his thoughts and feelings. But then I think Aidan is the one who’s a bit more… complex isn’t quite the word I’m thinking of: Liam is more inclined to be in the here and now and he’s not one to over-think things while Aidan… they do say that opposites attract. *grin* But their oppositeness doesn’t interfere where it counts.

With the character of Karif, I really didn’t know how to take him, at least not until I got to know him a little better. He may come across as spoiled – and in some ways he is – but as the acquaintance deepens I found him a young man whose life has been filled with more hardships than I would have ever guessed. As the story progressed Karif did some growing up… and most of that is due to Aidan and Liam.

And as far as the mystery went, I really had no idea who was behind the attempts and threats against Karif… I kept changing my mind, but I enjoyed it to the max.

Do I want to see more of Aidan and Liam? You better believe it! The sooner the better too, please.

I enjoyed this book very much and it confirmed that this series is really good.

It didn't have the strong sense of place of the previous book Three Wrong Turns in the Desert, which really made my head spin with all the adventures Aidan and Liam went through, and I missed it some. I also think that Kafir, the popstar Aidan and Liam were protecting, was cute, but not very likable, he just showed a little bit of growth in the end, but he was too much damsel-in-distress and drama-queenish. Both Kafir and Gavin were very careless, but they were also very young, so maybe that's understandable.

I was glad there was only Aidan's point of view in this book, because it made the book more even and Aidan is without doubt the funnier between him and Liam. Liam is still the hotter though. I liked seeing how comfortable they are with each other, even if they're still learning to know and maybe trust each other, both in their personal life and in their job.

I think the author is more comfortable with Aidan, so I had the impression that Liam's personality was not as developed as Aidan's and I hope that he'll show something more than what he told Aidan until now. I have the feeling there's a story Liam is not comfortable sharing yet about the way he dealt with his sexuality when he was younger and I am looking forward to seeing his more fragile side. It's as if for all his skills in his job, he is still growing as a person, maybe because Aidan is the first man he had a real relationship with.

The writing is very good, I had really the impression my eyes were flying over the page. I also appreciated very much the maleness - is that a word? - of the main characters. It's a perfect book to spend a few mindless and relaxed hours. Looking forward to the next!

This book happens few months after the event in book #1 (where Aidan and Liam met for the first time). This time, the two bodyguards are hired to keep a young singing superstar, who has been coming out, and then receives threats of his life.

I enjoy this story more than book #1. I like the new setting, I like the secondary relationship between Karif (the singing superstar) and Gavin (a British young man). It is still fast-paced with action and romance. I like the story on the repercussion of coming out in the Muslim country a bit more than terrorist plot (of book #1). The mystery is pretty well-kept, offering some twists that complicate the case.

Since Aidan and Liam has been together for months now, the relationship has bloomed deeper. Aidan is more assertive now, he seems to be let loose his inner bossy attitude to Liam (something that I don't think he could do when he was with his ex). It also shows him being jealous (which sometimes irks me) and sort of "pushing" Liam to keep reassuring Aidan that he loves him. Sometimes I imagine Liam rolling his eyes to Aidan behind his back *lol*. There is no point of view from Liam here (this story is purely from Aidan's view) BUT there is a moment where Liam shares his background story to Aidan, so I don't feel like his thoughts are left out. Oh, and just a completely random though, I love that Liam actually needs reading glasses to read! What can I say, I love seeing men with glasses

It's definitely a wonderful sequel and worth reading series. I want more of Aidan and Liam

I loved this book a great deal, Aidan and Liam are my favorite couple (I must go and vote for them in the list), but I have to say it took me a long while to warm up a little to Karif. I get where he's coming from, but his behavior in the beginning and his constant advances towards Liam and then Aidan - it put me off and I just couldn't sympathize with him :/ I can't stand people, who are trying to mess with someone they knew are in a happy relationship :(
Later on I stopped hating him, of course, but I still couldn't manage to like him enough to be invested in his relationship with Gavin the way I'm invested in Aidan and Liam. But I loved how things had all wrapped up nicely with Gavin's pursuer and Ibrahim Fayed. I was really fascinated with Karif and Fayed's relationship - I know there can't be future for them, but I still was glad it wasn't Fayed, who tryed to kill Karif. I guess I have a kink for a 'forbidden fruit', but I found their story romantic in it's own way *sigh*
All in all - loved this book! :)

Aidan has gone through basic training and joined Liam in his bodyguard business. In book number two of the series they are sent of to Djerba to protect the young singer, Karif, who has received death threats after coming out.

Although most of the takes place in just one location, this is certainly no quiet romance. It has every bit of the adventure I expected after having read the first book; unknown enemies, guns and bombs, and a testosterone-fuelled pop start fresh out of the closet eager to live out his new freedom, so Aidan and Liam have their hands full. The small breaks from the stress of protecting their client are spent either getting hot and heavy on the sofa, in the shower or wherever or butting heads in minor jealousy dramas which I found quite endearing ;-).

I listened to the audiobook of this one. Narrator Stan Jenson did a fine job. I especially loved the various accents he added to different non-American characters.

Aidan and Liam are back and trying to protect the just out pop star Karif al-Fulan, but he would rather be out along the coast of Djerba or trying to get between Aidan and Liam. Trying to wrangle Karif and deal with their own pressures is becoming a stress on them and their relationship.

Great second book in a series, and it was nice to see these guys and how they handled working together on an assignment. Both Liam and Aidan were just a good as the first book, if not a bit more developed so you really got to see them makes leaps personally but also as a couple.

Another romp through Tunisia - though not quite so much googling as in book 1.
Whilst Aidan is more of a bodyguard now, I did feel they needed to work out their working interactions more - as Aidan got his nose out of joint each time Liam took charge.
Kalif is quite childish and spent most of the time trying to thwart his bodyguards.
Gavin’s back story did seem a bit ott.

Was it just me, or did anyone else notice the way Liam ran "hot" then "cold" with Aidan throughout the whole book? I feel like there is something there... but, I can't quite figure it out, yet!

Anyways... I had read Three Wrong Turns in the Desert many, many years ago and am just now getting started back on this series! I found Aidan and Liam's relationship to be a bit one sided in this book... Liam could blow at Aidan and it was all, "I am sorry. I am tired. I love you." But when Aidan would blow? Boy, Liam was all over him, like he hadn't just done something right before that had been just as idiotic or ridiculous... grrr

But, with that having been said... this was a VERY entertaining read! Karif and then later, Gavin added those cute little "skinny dipping" moments to the story that keep the "heat" level up and the blood flowing! There was action and a bit of intrigue... along with a couple of unexpected "bad" guys! Unfortunately, there was a lot of "dick" in this story... (normally, for me, this is NOT a bad thing! *grin*) perhaps Mr. Plakcy has found a thesaurus since writing this book! *fingers crossed* But, all in all? I look forward to the rest of the books in this series! I see much more intrigue and hot "man on man" lovin' for these two... and I can't wait to read all about it! ;D

How is it that I neglected to review this wonderful story? I'd finished it the first night I bought it!

First, Aidan can be such a queen! Gotta love him though. He feels so much for Liam and Liam doesn't usually waste time in showing him how much he feels for Aidan either.

Second, that little prick is such a princess! He needs someone strong who won't take his shi...stuff and is more than willing to turn him over a knee and spank his ass.

I loved the action (as always!) and loved how strong Aidan showed himself to be. He proved his worth more than once to Liam, not only with thinking on his feet, but being able to stand his own against some tough (and not-so-tough) characters!

I am so looking forward to the third book (Teach Me Tonight), which has been released and I haven't purchased yet!

I am super easy with these books because they are just so entertaining. This sequel featuring Liam, the former SEAL and Aidan, the former ESL teacher from Philly is just fun, like a vacation. Set in an Arabian island resort Liam (and now Aidan, as his newly minted partner) are guarding an up and coming pop singer who has come out of the closet and is receiving threats from an imam. Aidan is still a bit uncertain since Liam is so attractive and he worries he's forced himself into Liam's bodyguard business. So Aidan can be a wee bit whiny at times but honestly I would feel the same way so it works! And the sex stays hot and frequent. I just have a soft spot for these guys and as silly as these stories are, I like them.

I liked this book, I just didn't enjoy it as much as the first one. There were places where the sexual content felt a little forced. There was a bit too much speculation over the hotness of the supporting characters, especially by Aidan. It made me like the heroes a little less than in the previous book. They didn't seem to gell as well, in fact there were parts when I wondered why they were still together. Things did pull together again by the end of the book and there was a happy ever after, I just didn't believe it as fully as I did last time.

The second part in this amazing series was interesting and it keep my attention till last page. I really enjoyed to fallow how Aidan and Liam interacted with each other between their job and private love life. This side is really well shown and everything was just interesting. The only blah... part in this story was the bodyguards job for that kid Karif al-Fulan, but hey in general the story is great and really well written. I simple didn't much like Kafir, lol. Aidan and Liam were great together, awesome couple!

Ok. So, Book 2 in the series. I preferred it to Book 1, probably because the characters are already established and the plot was more energetic, more action and adventure. Can't say it's not well written, it certainly is, but like with Book 1 in the series it didn't quite reach that 5 x star mark. I think its probably because there is no angst between the two protagonists and what little there is, lasts only a couple of paragraphs. I wanted them to have a major fallout, a fight, something to shake them up. No, they're happy and contented in both work and play.

★★★★½

This is the second book of the Have Body, Will Guard series and I enjoyed it just as much as the first one. Once again the story is told from Aidan's POV. I really like his voice; he is a well-developed character. Liam once again comes across as sexy as hell, Mr. Big Bad Bodyguard.

The pace was great. I love lots of action. The interactions between characters felt realistic. This was a quick, fun read. I have added the next one in the series to my tbr list.

I enjoyed this book. It read like one of the old Commando comics, a bit of an imagination stretch and a bit of action. Aidan and Liam are now working as a team but still sorting their relationship. Some reviewers saw Aidan as whiny I just think he still feels a bit like a fish out of water and needs constant assurance that he is doing okay and is loved. I will be reading more in this series.

I'm so relieved this didn't turn out to be a "threesome" book. I was afraid Karif was going to get a little action at first. Aidan was a bit on the whiny side at first and Karif was quite the little trouble maker but not for long. I love how he brought dirty, street boy Gavin back to the villa and we got to see that relationship develop as well. Action and sex packed fun!

It was an okay story for me, the relationships in the book ran hot and cold throughout and that started getting on my nerves a little bit.

my copy has 257 pages of story and 3 pages of other stuff--author bio, ads etc.

Liam and Aiden are working on their partnership--professional and personal. More in this series would be good but if their story is complete as is that's okay.

A good sequel - it didn't rehash stuff from the first book, and the MC's have progressed in their relationship. I also really like that there are a lot of details about the countries they live in and travel through. There are also unexpected curveballs to keep everyone on their toes.

I kind of sort of enjoy the series except that audible narrator gives one of the main character a voice that I had difficulty interpreting like I would if I read it. I am sure I would have a better experience with MY vocal interpretation.

It irritates me that these "bodyguards" constantly act so un-body-guardish. If any real bodyguards acted this way, they'd be fired instantly -- or their clients would be dead!

I enjoyed this book, though found it a bit flat at times and a bit incredible at others. Overall, a fun read with fast chapters and plenty of turns.
