Stories claim the Pale Princess was a powerful sorcerer who once saved the world from a dangerous magic. Only a few know the truth.
Lan and Sophie lead a simple life with their grandparents, though both long for more. When their grandparents are murdered during a strange magical attack, their lives will be forever changed.
For Sophie, she's brought to a palace where she lives a luxurious life, while trying to understand what the strange sorcerer Ridaln wants from her. When she discovers a talent with magic, she learns poses that give her access to power that she had only heard about in the stories her Nana told.
For Lan, who's always wanted to learn the sword, the opportunity to train as a soldier makes him think he'll be able to learn and serve. What he finds is brutality and torment, though he does learn to fight. A chance encounter on the battlefield takes him away from that brutality, where he's given a chance to learn another way—and finally become the mythical Taihg soldier he's dreamed of being.
As Sophie tries to understand her purpose in the palace, and Lan longs for battle, they become a part of a dangerous war—and may be the only ones capable of stopping a dark power a dangerous sorcerer wants to once more unleash upon the world.
The Pale Princess begins an epic progression style fantasy series.
Unfortunately, I still have yet to actually care for any of these characters. Ridaln is the only one I found somewhat interesting with how mysterious he can be. There is a lack of description when it comes to each character as well. I can’t picture ANY of them. Does Ridaln have long hair or short hair? Is he young or older? He has silver eyes, tanned and that’s about all I know. Same with everyone else. It’s annoying cause I can’t see these people when I’m reading about them. I’m going to attempt the next book but it’ll be a lot of skimming I’m sure.
Stories of legend. Of sorcerers & warriors protecting the realm. For one pair of siblings these are no longer mythical tales. Rather a very real desperate battle to survive.
Shockingly dark. Full of mystery, brutality & terror. Sucked me in & left me yearning for more!
It's been awhile since a book annoyed me this much and I continued reading to the end. On almost every page, there was a paragraph of questions: What would happen now? What should the character do? Who would be angry? It was exceedingly tedious, as were the characters.
The female MC was supposed to be 13/14 years old, so a certain level of immaturity would have been fine, and the male MC was supposed to be 17, so should have been a little more aware/worldly than his sister, but both characters were just off somehow.
Plus, the whole book just moved terribly slowly and sometimes things were repeated multiple times, slightly differently: The city was big, and he had forgotten. When he was in the city he didn't realize how large it was. Re-entering the city he was surprised by its size, he didn't remember it was so enormous.
I've been looking for a good, solid fantasy for some adventurous escapism, but they are not so easy to find. This book has a ton of good reviews, so if magic and fantasy is your favorite genre, you might want to give it a go. I was very annoyed by it.
One if not the most annoying book I've read in a while. The characters are, from page one, annoying. The story is from what I found extremely slow burn. It's so slow that the author more or less keeps going in circles and the reader is being kept in the dark all the time. The two perspectives are somewhat ok, though the characters are as mentioned not interesting at all.
The main point I disliked, and why I have dropped the book, is that nothing is clear and everything is being kept in the dark. A secondary point is the treatment of the characters; it's horrendous for some reason. I don't recommend this book at all.
The reviews all said it started slow but was worth it in the end so I kept going. The characters have no depth to them and it's hard to actually come to like any of them. The story is intriguing, but even after a full book has yet to really take off. The potential is there so I'll probably give book 2 a go.
DK Holmberg pulls you into his story with the magic he weaves. Using characters we can relate to, he makes us feel what they do,. If you like magic and drama delve into a well told story. A book well worth the money.
The book started slow, but it gradually got more exciting chapter by chapter. I didntvquite expect the ending, which was a nice surprise. I can't wait to read the next book
The characters are wonderful. From the time it begins there's mystery. Adventure comes when there only family is murdered. Then the grandchildren a boy of 16 and girl of 13 are taken to another country. Read on to find out what happens next.
I enjoyed The Pale Princess as I have with other books by D. K. Holmberg. Excellent character and world building. Looking forward to reading book 2. This is an author that I follow.
Totally enjoyed it! This is a well written and has well developed characters. The story is catching and with the strong characters makes for a very enjoyable read. Great Reading Everyone!
Another interesting world built of magic and surprises galore. Sister and brother, separated....will they live? Only by reading this series will you learn.
