Applied Linguistics investigates real-world problems involving language. As such it has the difficult task of mediating between academic expertise and lived experience, attempting to reconcile opposed interests and perspectives. This clearly written introduction provides a concise but comprehensive overview of the most pressing and controversial issues surrounding contemporary language use today, including intercultural communication, political persuasion, new technologies, the growth of English, language in education, and foreign language teaching and learning.

A good book all in all, I had to skim past a couple of chapters, since I already have in-depth knowledge of some of the notions mentioned, especially those concerning ELT.
I would've liked it better if the lay-out was a little bit more exciting

It's short and not a bad introduction to the subject matter. Despite the length, it is a boring book.

One of the best applied linguistics books, or how Cook refers to it as a series of introductions to what applied linguistics does. It is clear, on point and easy to understand.

Fine short introduction to the discipline of applied linguistics with a deliberate focus on giving a brief, general overview of its history, interests, necessity, relations to other disciplines, and subfields, while also including a bunch of reading to help anyone with more interest to go on. Deliberately slight and utilitarian.

Quite well structured, somewhat easy to understand, but ultimately not too interesting in my eyes.

This is a popular book on applied linguistics. It is still of value as those wishing to make an introduction to applied linguistics, but not so good if you already know about it.

Bookshelves are a way for you to organize your books. You can create as many shelves as you like and shelf a book under as many shelves as you like. Shelves are essentially what some people call 'tags'.

A good book, but no more than an introduction. If you want a more detailed view on applied linguistics, you should seek for other alternatives, other books. However, this one is a good starter!

Most useful as an introduction to topic and as a source for further readings.
