Something sinister is happening in the mountain community of Redford, Colorado. Battling his own personal demons, Police Chief Jonah Westfall knows the dark side of life and has committed himself to eradicating it. When a pair of raccoons are found mutilated, Jonah investigates the gruesome act right away in hopes that he can stop the twisted behavior before it escalates. Jonah's investigation forces him to involve candle maker Tia Monroe, a childhood friend who refuses to let him hurt anyone she loves again, veterinarian Liz Rainier, who is new to town, and Piper, the young woman running the local bakery. Forever haunted by his own past, Jonah vows to protect Redford and the people he cares about. But he can't penetrate every wound or secret -- especially one fueled by love and guilt teetering on madness.

Wow. Whoa. This book was really cool. I'm not one to normally read thrillers or mysteries, but I'm trying to mix up my reading list with everything. I'm very pleased that I did.
First, I'm going to comment on this author's amazing writing. It's just beautiful. A book that could have been written so plainly and simply was instead written lyrically, almost as if a poem. It's hard to describe, but I really love books written like this. Props to the author and her word pictures. It is written in third person from four different people's point of view, which was awesome.
Indivisible is about lots of people, though the main characters are Tia and Jonah. They have a past between them that consists of bitterness and regret but are forever connected.
Tia is bitter and withdrawn and just living in a blur letting her regrets and guilt keep her down, but forever, unfortunately in love with Jonah. Jonah is always in a dark place with too many personal demons. He's a recovering alcoholic who feels the pull every day of his life. He loves Tia, but she won't have him. I fell in love a little with Jonah, he was a great character in this book.
That's just the romance, which is rockin. But this book is also a mystery thriller. Someone is mutilating animals, but in a surgical kind of way. There's a meth lab that needs finding as well. All this is good, and the plot is excellent. But what I really enjoyed in the book were the people and their interactions. The book is chock full of great characters. My favorite ended up being Miles by the end. I just loved him.
I was really surprised when about half way through the book I realized it was actually Christian Fiction. I love Christian fiction but have never read anything like this in that genre. You don't have to be a Christian or anything to enjoy this book immensely.
I am most definitely going to be checking out this author's other books. I am thankful to WaterBrook Press for gifting me this book for review. The book was released in 2010, so go grab a copy and read it already! :)
Jonah & Tia are two people living in a small town with a shared past try to stay out of each others way. However, when a series of crimes starts to escalate, they can no longer ignore each other nor the feelings that they have been trying to bury.
I really enjoyed this book. Was a first for me from this author and left me wanting to read others. Although I agree with other reviews, that the villain in the story was easy to figure out, for me it did not hurt the story. The characters were engaging and I felt the story moved like water in a river towards a huge waterfall. The ending blew me away even though I knew what was coming.
Another reader quoted the 'wolf' paragraph, and I agree it was my favorite passage in the whole book. There was one other that I really liked...'Anger is an expression of grief. You don't get mad when you don't care. Love and anger are entwined.' I try to remind myself of that when I tell my kids no on something they want to do...they in turn get pissed at me and tell me they hate me with tears streaming down their faces. ;)
I found this book at a small bookstore that had just opened up. The story seemed slow and there was a mystery and some romance but, I just wasn't impressed.
What a phenomenal read! Kept me going into the late nights with the moon! Shocking and page turning are a mere form of a description as to the power and pull of this book! Bringing in the God factor was the thirst quencher for me! I just love when a Christian novelist can write murder mysteries with real feeling and a powerful story. And yet keep it clean and concise. Kristen brings to the murder mystery world what Christ brings to His people! Redemption and Hope! .
Heitzmann is a new to me author so I wasn't sure what to expect going in, but let me tell you that there was not a slow spot in this book. The author weaves a very intricate story between the past and the present, giving you little glimpses into how past actions of so-called upstanding people can damage and reshape innocent lives. The characters are very real and I felt that they came off as very authentic, especially Jonah battling his demons with alcohol. I always enjoy reading stories that are set in rustic towns which have deep connections with the wildlife and the forests that surround them. As I was reading this book it felt like I was peeling an onion with many ,many layers! I found myself stopping at the end of each chapter and thinking to myself....o.k. now what would make this person do that? What clues have I just read that would get me one step closer to the identity of this sadist person? I raced through this book in less than two days because I HAD to know the WHO and the WHY. Please, don't let the genre interfere with you picking this book up or not....if I didn't know going into this book tour that it was a Christian Suspense novel I would never have thought it was so when I was finished. All I know is that this is a solid piece of suspense writing with a very ominous tone that runs just beneath the pages...and keeps you turning the pages until the very end.
This was the first book I've read by Kristen Heitzmann. I wasn't sure what to expect and there were some aspects that pleasantly surprised me, but also a few things that disappointed me.
The biggest issue I had in reading this book was that I spent about 65% of it completely confused. The characters (especially the women) were so similar in personality I kept mixing them up with each other and had to go back and remind myself who was who a few times. Once I got them straightened out though things started to fall into place.
The book is full of suspense, a bit gruesome at times, but interesting and (this is important for Christian-lit), I didn't feel as if it was trying to shove the gospel down my throat. Instead there were nice little reminders here and there of the importance of faith and how it works in peoples lives.
If you are a mystery fan and looking for something that combines some intrigue, romance and is clean, good fun I'd recommend checking this book out.
Full of twists and turns and slightly unbelievable narrative. I never quite knew what to expect. The characters are interestingly developed. The theme of some indivisible finds goes through the book and you are left to wonder what all that is really about. The answer is very unusual. I really like Kristen Heitzmann's writing style and highly recommend many of her books. This one definitely has a lots of unique twists.
I loved the characters in this book - there was a variety of personalities that kept me turning the pages. Also, while Heitzmann isn't writing the next great American novel, I enjoy her style of writing - she strives to deal realistically with ugly pasts, disappointments, etc. I recommend!
Oh my word. Gag. What an awful book. I can't believe that I actually finished. Well, I finished because the narrative was structurally sound, the actual words and syntax that is. Everything else grated on my nerves and Heitzmann used to be one of my favorite authors. First, she shifts between so many different character perspectives making it almost impossible to determine a protagonist of the book. Within the first chapter she shifts three times. Second, she insists on portraying love as physical attraction and describing female characters from major to minor in objectifying ways. For example, the supposedly stand up police chief happens to observe that this former high school classmate of his has a rather ample, jiggling bosom. Seriously? Third, for no reason whatsoever she included this sentence from the perspective of Liz describing Tia, the love interest. "She liked her, though ordinarily she was wary of exotic-looking women." Excuse me? Where did that come from? Why on earth would we need this random, utterly unnecessary racist comment? It served absolutely no purpose in the book and also made no sense given Heitzmann's previous descriptions of Tia, the female protagonist. Fourth, I could predict everything a mile off. No suspense whatsoever.
At first I wasn’t sure if I would like this book. The beginning is a little dark and depressing. The main characters start off with some deep dark secrets that leave them lonely people. The mysterious dialogue leaves you guessing as to how the past has affected these main characters. But this psychotic thriller is anything but boring and I couldn’t put the book down until I knew the answers to all of my questions. The ending is very satisfying for the most part and it was a good read.
book got better as it went along until the ending it was a 4*. Redford, Colorado Police Chief Jonah Westfall is the center of this story his friend from childhood, the love his life who has avoided him for years. A new comer who works for his childhood friend in the local baker. His nemesis the new locale vet and a genius who is suffering from ocd (obsessive compulsive disorder). Date rate drug plays a small part. Large local drug lab event takes place.
The author takes you on twists and turns most unexpected in this present day mystery/adventure. Always Heitzmann's books involve a spiritual wisdom. Human problems both physical and emotional are warmly and knowledgeably handled in her books. I tend to gravitate to historical fiction but couldn't put this book down. Loved the Colorado settings throughout many of her books.
I had such a hard time getting through this book. The ending was much better than the beginning and the middle, which I had to force myself to read. There were too many characters, making it confusing. Too many things going on at once. And although the end was good, I DID see it coming and I also felt it wrapped up too quickly. For these reasons, although I love Kristen Heitzmann, I can't give it more than a 4.
I would class this novel as a bit of a psychological thriller. It was a pretty good page turner for me. Thankfully the romance side of the novel did not play a center role.
Crazy, psychotic character posing as a normal town business person... very cool premise, well developed characters, intense drama... clean language. (The crime is not suitable for pre-teen readers.)
