According to virtually every business writer, we are in the midst of a new "information age," one that will revolutionize how workers work, how companies compete, perhaps even how thinkers think. And it is certainly true that Information Technology has become a giant industry. In America, more that 50% of all capital spending goes into IT, accounting for more than a third of the growth of the entire American economy in the last four years. Over the last decade, IT spending in the U.S. is estimated at 3 trillion dollars. And yet, by almost all accounts, IT hasn't worked all that well. Tom Davenport holds the President's Chair in Information Technology and Management at Babson College. His books and articles on business process reengineering, knowledge management, attention management, knowledge worker productivity, and analytical competition helped to establish each of those business ideas. Over many years he's authored or co-authored nine books for Harvard Business Press, most recently Competing on Analytics: The New Science of Winning (2007) and Analytics at Work: Smarter Decisions, Better Results (2010). Since this book is a over ten years old, I found myself wondering why I haven't seen more of the ideas it mentions. Maybe it's just where I work, but I'm not so sure of that. The ideas it has around managing information from an ecological perspective had me nodding my head in agreement many times, and shaking it when thinking of how things are done in the office. Sometimes the reading gets a bit slow, but the content is great and gets you thinking, at least if you're in an organization with communication and knowledge management issues. Well-put together.
If you've never considered a complex information system to be a kind of ecology (a newish idea in 1997), this book contains valuable information. Otherwise, this book is mostly a history lesson: by now, many of the battles that the author mentions have been won.
