Awesome. Not as good as any of the F.L. Allen books that I have read, but Dr. Payne gave a pretty darn good account of a person who, I believe, should not be forgotten.
Actually, I was fortunate enough to read this book as a first edition, which was given to me by one Oliver Ellsworth Allen, who, in 2012, is F.L. Allen's 90-year-old son. Really nice and interesting person, and a truly wonderful writer in his own right. See "History of Tribeca", by O.E. Allen.
What makes "The Man of Only Yesterday..." so good is the plethora (a fine SAT word, for this Ph.D. Chemical Engineer !!!!!) of F.L. Allen quotes and anecdotes. Mr. F.L. Allen actually was able to edit, successfully, at Harper's, articles/stories written by authors who, we would first believe, were not to be edited. Quite a guy.
Am quite glad that I was able to meet, and am able to converse with, his son.
