Предпосылки: 1) Любой креатив "от Олегыча" не скажу, что люблю, но уважаю - это точно!

2) Понимаю, что на вкус и цвет - все фломастеры разные... Но, по моему мнению, то, что делает Олегыч, с очень большим трудом можно считать "художественной литературой". (Ну, начинайте уже кидаться помидорами!).

Тексты Пелевина - это, скорее, эдакий театр абсурда, когда на полупустую сцену (на которой минимум простейших декораций; таких, что ни на секунду не забываешь, что это театр, и всё в нём не настоящее) выводятся 2-3 безликих персонажа, наряженных в яркие гротескные костюмы и маски, и невпопад произносят цитаты из великих философских текстов.

Можно долго перечислять критерии, в соответствии с которыми любой текстовый перформанс "от Олегыча" очень сложно идентифицировать именно как художественное произведение. Давайте, я изложу доводы оккультные ;)))

Согласно оккультному критерию, текст должен резонировать с каким-либо уровнем психики; доставлять на одном из уровней удовольствие.

Есть визионерские тексты, которые идеально реконструируют ощущения; воссоздают мир как некое зримое, осязаемое (и т.д.) "сенсорное пространство". Есть тексты, которые аппелируют к каким-либо эмоциям и к воображению. Понятно, что 90% всей художественной литературы самых разных жанров "пасётся" именно на астральном поле (астрал = эмоции + воображение).

А вот что есть тексты, функционирующие преимущественно на ментальном (и выше) уровне? А вот это и есть Олегыч :) В его книгах нет, например, тонких пейзажных зарисовок (сенсорного уровня), нет "человеческих" правдоподобных характеров, отношений и страстей (астрального уровня).

Зато есть бесконечное философствование, которое (дабы не вступать в прямую конкуренцию с Хайдеггером и прочими профессиональными дискурсмонгерами :))) разбавляется и маскируется "декорациями". В качестве "декораций" Олегыч традиционно использует стёб, гротеск, словотворчество и прочие фишки своего творческого метода ;) Но стёб, гротеск и т.п. - это всё "от ума", но не "от сердца"... Вот я и говорю - ментальный уровень и выше :)

Книги Пелевина (и S.N.U.F.F. тут не исключение) - это не художественная литература, это художественная метафизика. Эдакая рассудочно выстроенная из кубиков слов логико-абсурдистская композиция ;)

3) Как человек очень рациональный, я явно люблю всё рассудочное и тайно обожаю всё абсурдное и дурацкое :) Поэтому (всегда заранее предвкушая результат :)) тексты Олегыча я читал, читаю и буду читать...

Но... Метафизика (даже художественная) в больших дозах меня утомляет. И потом, есть определенный уровень этой самой метафизики - а Олегыч пишет обычно не круче, чем мы с друзьями-приятелями за рюмкой чая в кухонных дискуссиях углубляемся :)))

Теперь собственно про S.N.U.F.F. ...

А) Про какие-либо человеческие характеры и отношения в книге - забыли! Т.к. их там в принципе никогда не было :) Объяснение было выше. Поэтому не надо задавать (себе и окружающим) дебильные вопросы: "А почему резиновая девушка так долго не уходила к молодому орку, если она в него влюбилась по-настоящему?".

По поводу персонажей, их характеров, сюжетных линий, связанных с отношениями - no comment!

Б) О чём тогда книга (если герои и их отношения - всего лишь одна из картонных декораций)? Это антиутопия. Олегыч взял несколько современных трендов; гиперболизировал, довёл до абсурда; смикшировал из этих раздутых трендов некий мир будущего.

Мне лично этот тренд-микс читать было интересно, потому как "в замес" попали тренды не столько технологические, сколько социальные, политические, экономические, идеологические. Каждый из этих трендов изучается вполне серьёзными учёными и институтами, но только писатель может позволить себе махнуть рукой на попытки просчитать эти тенденции, а сразу столкнуть читателя лицом к лицу с уже свершившимся. На мой взгляд (как любителя футурологии ;)) местами получилось до жути правдоподобно! (Силён Олегыч, силён...)

В) Главная "фишка" книги: сюрреалистическое противостояние двух обществ - людей и орков. Причём, читатель без труда идентифицирует в орках Восток (славянский мир), а в "людях" - Запад.

Всё, что написано про орков и про "людей" - злая и меткая социальная сатира! Олегыч блестяще препарирует механизмы социального контроля, которые в равной степени делают социальными рабами-марионетками и "злых" орков и "добрых" "людей". Приходишь к очень чёткому осознанию, что т.н. "свободное общество" отличается от несвободного лишь длиной цепи...

Вообще, в свете последних революционных веяний в России, книга Олегыча подозрительно актуальна :) Он либо провидец, либо чертовски трудоспособный Мастер :))

При этом он рискует огрести люлей и со стороны наших прозападных революционэров, и со стороны оркоподобных квасных патриотов - т.к. (уж извините за лексику!) обсирает по полной и тех и других, наглядно демонстрирует, что политический процесс в современном обществе - это фарс, и что его итоговые результаты отличаются только способами социального контроля...

...В книге есть намёк на решение (бегство; крах привычного мира вследствие роковой случайности-катастрофы), и есть решение - и оно по-прежнему внутри каждого из нас ;)

...впрочем, как истинный адепт Пустоты Олегыч не даёт в книге (и не даст никогда :))

If you haven't read Pelevin before, this will seem fresh and strong. If you have - it might not. The end result it all comes down to is good, but I wish it didn't take such a long and winding route to get to it.

S.N.U.F.F. tries to poke fun at everything that's currently wrong with society - the fake media, the political movements, the idiocracy - but does it in an incredibly cynical way (and perhaps tries to poke at too many things?) Every character is a caricature that's meant to disgust you, as is every social structure. Sad to say that even though Pelevin is a master at language, he does this ever so tediously and maybe a tad too vulgarly. Perhaps you shouldn't read more than a certain number of his books, because you'll get tired of the 'discourse', as he would say, sooner or later.

Another thing is that even though you know the main character is supposed to be the most unreliable narrator ever, and he's so full of it, it's still pretty hard to deal with the cynicism, misogyny and coldness displayed. So, a warning: if you're LGBTQIA, feminist or just sensitive, I suggest maybe giving this one a pass. It's very cynical about A LOT of things, and mostly minorities or the marginalized. I don't think it's meant in a mean way, it's probably just poking fun at the system, but it will probably hurt you. Part of the parody is the absolute objectification of a woman, and even though I could see where he was going with this and why, it didn't make it any easier to read. Basically? If you don't have tough skin, don't read this at all.

Лучшая книга Пелевина, которую я до сих пор прочитала. Читается труднее, чем А Хули или Чапаев, текст плотнее и насыщеннее, да и настроение более угрюмое, но абсолютно стоит читать. Сюжет, как всегда у Пелевина, играет роль лишь второстепенную - он устанавливает фон для философской дискуссии, в которую по очереди вступают герои. Как всегда, абсолютно все они (герои) представляют собой какую-то мировоззренческую позицию (порой довольно страшненькую). Сама же книга - мощная сатира на современное общество, и не только российское, между прочим.

Дело происходит в далеком (но довольно узнаваемом) будущем. Два молодых представителя недоразвитой деспотии Уркаинского Уркаганата - урки (или орки) Грым и Хлоя - попадают волей случая ( и не только) в некий земной рай, находящийся в огромном воздушном шаре (офф-шаре, хе-хе) над территорией полуразрушенной атромной войной и прочими природными и социальными бедствиями Сибири. В принципе, книга посвящена описаниям реальностей жизни (и смерти) в Уркаганате и столкновениям молодых орков с реальностями "цивилизованного" мира офф-шара. Все действие воспринимается глазами одного из типичных преставителей этой цивилизации пилота-оператора Домилолы, находящегося в состоянии любви-ненависти по отношению к своей суре (суррогатной женщине-роботу) Кайе.

Главный вопрос книги - для меня лично - вопрос реальности всего происходящего. Насколько реальна производимая "творцами реальности" офф-шара реальность? Так уж ли она отличается от реальности, в которой существую я? Насколько оправдана уверенность - или, скорее,постоянно омрачаемое сомнениями желание быть уверенным - Домилолы в своем превосходстве над "несуществующей в реальности" сурой Кайей, чьи реакции предопределены заложенной в ней компьютерной программой? А сам Домилола разве не является некоей химически запрограмированной естественной машиной, реагирующей на определенные стимулы строго определенным способом: вот так - на страдание, а вот эдак - на удовольствие?

Впрочем, отходя от "философского" штиля, хочу отметить, что книга Пелевина вовсе не занудно-задумчивая, а очень смешная. Правда с мрачноватым таким оттенком. Описание жизни в Уркаине, через которую красной нитью проходит идея "подавляемой анальной сексуальности", оказывается до боли знакомым каждому россиянину. Символически эта идея проявляется через слово "пидор", употребляемое орком в буквально каждом ��редложении, и обладающее поразительной полисемичностью. А в деятельности офф-шарных творцов реальности - сомелье и дискурс-монгеров, - невозможно не узнать дорогую сердцу и сросшуюся с государством (и чуть ли не заменившую его) машину СМИ и питающую ее интеллектуальную элиту. Но самым пугающим мне показалось описание Резерва Маниту - святая святых офф-шарного мира - центра денежных преобразований, в котором, как в солнечном реакторе энергия, постоянно появляются ниоткуда и исчезают в никуда огромные суммы несуществующих в действительности, но весьма реальных для всех вовлеченных лиц, денег(маниту). Мир, созданный Пелевиным, очень органичен и управляется "единой в имени едином" Святой Троицей бога Маниту, денег-маниту и цифрового экрана- маниту. Реальность Пелевина гораздо менее фантастична, чем, скажем, мир фильма "Матрица", но его героям (как и нам) гораздо труднее очнуться от наваждений их "реального" мира...

I've already read 2 books by Pelevin before I picked up this one. And that made all the difference...

I feel like Pelevin writes the same book over and over again - his stories have the same structure, general outlines, ideas and similar characters. Only details and embellishments change.

At first I was entertained by his usual abundance of cultural references and satire, but soon the deja vu started to wear on me. The long philosophical monologues that blew my mind in his first book were now mildly boring. I guess he just doesn't have anything new to say.

Neverovatna knjiga i neverovatan pisac (verovatno ću se zadržati samo na ovom drugom kada i ako budem pročitao njegove druge knjige).
Mučio sam se na početku i najpre stekao lakonski utisak o nekakvom intelektualnom snobizmu, koji se vešto služi apsurdom da prosto ostavi utisak, ali to je naravno bilo preuranjeno. Kako roman teče on dobija smisao (i gubi ga, ali na način da vuče u traganje za istim, a ne odbija).
Ovo je "Vrli novi svet" na jedan drugačiji, originalniji, savremenijie, apsurdniji način. To je mešavina hakslijevskog i montipajtonovskog (da ukradem tuđu kvalifikaciju) duha iz pera jednog Rusa, a ovo poslednje potvrđuje moje davno ubeđenje da sve što nastane u okviru ove slovenske grane književnosti, ma na kojoj se ideološkoj poziciji nalazilo, neizostavno je veliko. Uvrnuta i neponovljiva estetika Peljevina, sa diskutabilnom, ali iskrenom etikom o urušenom svetu budućnosti koji je dosledno preneo esenciju svih nakaradnih matrica sadašnjosti. Ne znam bolje o svemu ovome da se izrazim. I pored sve nakaznosti u detaljima tog vrlog novog Peljevinovog sveta, perspektiva nije mračna i nade ima (barem je takav utisak ostavila na mene). Čim se malo odmorim potražiću neko njegovo drugo delo.

Despite the ironic subtitle ‘A Utopia’, I’m pretty sure ‘S.N.U.F.F.’ turned up on my to-read list via the dystopia keyword library search. And for once I actually consider it to be a dystopia! The setting is the vicinity of Siberia some hundreds of years in the future, after nuclear war and climate change have apparently decimated the global population. Those who remain are stratified into a literal underclass known as Orks and a privileged minority who live in Big Byz, a sort of fancy space station floating in the atmosphere. Periodically there are carefully stage-managed and media-friendly battles between the two, in which the Orks fight with futile pre-modern weapons and die in droves. The narrator is a freelance cameraman who covers and participates in these wars; his drone cameras is fitted with plenty of missiles. His narrative begins when he films an Orkish teenage couple for the run-up to a planned battle, which propels them to fame and gets him a paycheque. Damilola, the narrator, and most of the characters have remarkably little agency in their own story, however. The vast majority of the book essentially consists of world-building and quasi-philosophical discussion of the implications thereof. Only the last 15 pages (of 470!) introduce the possibility of change into this static world.

In principle I have no objection whatsoever to novels, especially dystopian novels, that place great emphasis on world-building. I think thoughtful world-building that reflects on current social, political, or cultural issues is part of the definition of dystopia. In this case, however, my two main reactions were: a) But where are you going with this? and b) I’m missing something here. The first was in response to the narrator’s role in introducing the Orkish couple, and thus the reader, to the privileged world of Big Byz (full name Byzantion). Many many pages are spent on tangents about how the world came to be like this, not all of which had a clear point. The stuff about GULAG being the equivalent of LGBT+ didn’t really go anywhere. On the latter front, I felt like something was being lost in translation. ‘S.N.U.F.F.’ is playful with language and rife with ironic puns, which reminded me slightly of reading Andrei Platinov’s Happy Moscow. Because that was written in the 1930s, however, it came it with explanatory notes. In this case, I felt like a sophisticated parody of Russia's media, politics, and culture was largely going over my head. Of course a certain amount applies more universally, for example:

”Why did the wars start?” asked Grim.
“They started when the infomancers of one clan or another declared that someone else’s reality was pernicious. They showed themselves movies about other people, and then pretended that those were news, worked themselves up into a frenzy, and then started bombing those others.”
“And did people believe the news?”
“Belief has nothing to do with it. The picture that was created by the infomancers became the truth not because people believed in it, but because it wasn’t safe to think any other way. What people were expecting from information wasn’t the truth, but a roof over their head. The surest way was to join the most powerful tribe, after learning to see the same visions as the infomancers saw. Things were just calmer that way.”

The use of linguistic world-building was interesting, in particular the use of the same word, ‘manitou’, for god, money, and computer screen. I was happy to just roll with this and wonder what significance it had in Russian, so felt a little disappointed when it was (over?) explained:

”In ancient times,” he said, “people believed that the screen of an information terminal glowed because a special spirit descended into it. They called the spirit ‘Manitou’. That’s why they called the screen a ‘monitor’ - ‘illuminated by Manitou’. And in Church English the word for manitou is ‘money’, that’s what it was originally. The prescriptions of Manitou explain it like this…”

The Slavoj Žižek reference was great, though: ‘This zhizhek seemed to carry a semantic loading almost greater than that of the words themselves’. And I loved this bit of dialogue:

”Grim,” she asked, “Do you believe in love at first sight?” [...]
“I don’t know,” said Grim, “I believe in death at first sight. I know for certain that happens. But I’ve only read about love at first sight.”

This is a dialogue-heavy book, which can be both a strength and a weakness. The most appealing parts for me were the arguments between Damilola and his sex doll Kaya about whether she is conscious. He says she isn’t; she says neither of them are because consciousness doesn’t really exist. She was the only character in the book with actual agency, which made up to some extent for the narrator’s depressing misogyny. (I’m pretty sure the sexism was making a point here rather than reflexive; that makes it less depressing to read, but still depressing.) Overall, I found ‘S.N.U.F.F.’ smart yet stolid, in part because I lacked Russian context and in part because it’s very light on plot. Pelevin strikes me as an intriguing writer though, so I’ll see if the library has any of his other books.

First I was a little disappointed. You know, I really like other books of Pelevin, but it was like: "Yeah - yeah, he's just another one imperial guy, who calls ukrainians orks created just to be hated". But I kept reading and then new and new horizons was appearing like flashes of light in my brain. And then was this unexpectedly bright finish part (like a light of Monitu))).. I don't know, maybe I can call it a catharsis, but it feels almost like I was imagined a buddhist enlightenment)

This book helped me organize my mind in a more clearly structured picture (or I just like to think so))) In any case, it's really worth reading)

Tady fakt cesta nevede. Asi po 70stránkách jsem musela googlit, o čem ta knížka vůbec je. Ale ani na 200 stránce se to nedalo číst. Žádná z postav nebyla nějak atraktivní, aby člověka zaujala. Děj byl prazvláštní. Ani si nejsem jistá, o co přesně v něm šlo.
Ale nejhorší byl jazyk, kterým to bylo napsané. Dvakrát nedával smysl, autor něco vždy pojmenoval fancy odborně a hlavně vymyšleným názvem nebo takovým, co ma normálně jiný význam.
Minimálně 10 různých věcí bylo nazýváno ''Manitou'', kdo se má v tom vyznat?

„S.N.U.F.F.” Wiktora Pielewina to powieść alegoryczna, silnie operująca metaforą i symbolami. Jest dokładnie tym, czym science-fiction było u szczytu swej potęgi, nim popularność space opery i lżejszego ujęcia fantastyki odmieniła jego oblicze. Oto science-fiction, które analizuje rzeczywistość – współczesną, rzeczywistość, w której operuje i egzystuje na co dzień pisarz, bo o rzeczywistości rosyjskiej jest tu de facto mowa. Pielwin poddaje ją analizie metodą podstawień, sugestii i nawiązań. Oto labirynt rosyjskiej duszy, pełny rosyjskich bólów, strachu, jednocześnie jednak dotykający tematów uniwersalnych, jak choćby temat medialnych manipulacji. Nie jest to powieść lekka, jak to już bywa z twórczością ze wschodu. Jednak dla fanów cięższego sci-fi, mroczniejszego, naznaczonego apokaliptyczną nutą będzie to najpewniej powieść mocna, tym ciekawsza, im więcej wiedzą o współczesnej, putinowskiej Rosji, lecz również Rosji sowieckiej. A Ci z Was, którzy nie chcą nurzać się w tych brudnych odmętach o kwaskowato-siarkowym posmaku, niech patrzą na zachód - tam sci-fi to szkło, metal i plastik. Tutaj zaś panuje żrąca rdza.

Критики, начиная с профессионального в Литературке и заканчивая читателями, дружно ругают Пелевинский
«S.N.U.F.F.». Русскоязычный читатель, воспитанный на суровой русской классике, в которой юмором называется трагедия вроде Чеховского «Вишневого сада». Он готов смеяться над другими (Хармс) или прошлым (Ильф и Петров), но обижается и впадает в ярость, когда писатель пытается ‘глумиться над святынями’ и, тем более, будущим.

Расцвет популярности Пелевина пришелся на 90-е («Омон Ра», «Чапаев и Пустота»). Новое поколение было готово расстаться с казавшимся нелепым советским прошлым, смеясь: будущее обещало быть свободным и прекрасным. Но по мере того, как поколение Х двигалось от молодости в зрелость, эйфория ранней демократии сменилась нынешней итерацией конфликта славянофилов и ��ападников с соответствуюшим набором неоспариваемых ценностей.

Пелевин в S.N.U.F.F., где Россия превратилось в - о ужас - говорящую на украинском суржике, буквально банановую (изменение климата) республику, арену кровавых спектаклей, поставленных выродившимися в сценаристов - дискурсмонгеров, смог высмеять и задеть всех подряд. Меня, признаюсь, тоже: развитие мифа о эквивалентности феминисток и лесбиянок и зачем-то приплетение к ним борьбы за поднятие возраста согласия поначалу задело. Однако, за великолепную карикатуру на иммигрантское сообщес��во, которое собирается в секторе «Лондон» поднебесного шара, ест пельмени, пьет водку и ругает с одинакововой яростью бывшую Родину и нынешнюю страну обитания, настолько узнаваемо, что за это можно забыть о раздражении.

Главная проблема - и преимущество - книги, замаскированной под дистопию, что она описывает не будущее, а настоящее. И постмодернистское настоящее, в котором всё, и в первую очередь «борьба за свободу», покупается как когда-то покупались водящие хороводы в нарядных костюмах крестьяне, вызывает отвращение. На первый взгляд. А на второй S.N.U.F.F — история Ромео и Джульетты с научно-фантастическими финтифлюшками и счастливым концом. При всей его циничности, Пелевин не смог полностью расстаться с верой в отдельного человека или киборга.

Od mojih silnih početnih očekivanja dobio sam jedan sasvim prosječan roman koji istina počinje veoma eksplozivno, stvarajući nam jednu nimalo izvještačenu i lažnu sliku svijeta u kojem (zapravo) već živimo, ali kako to obično biva - naša očekivanja nisu veoma često u sprezi sa autorovom idejom. Tako da sam sa tim morao da se pomirim i pokušam otkriti neku drugu draž romana koji u daljem toku neće ići po mojim očekivanjima. Dakle, snizio sam standarde, medjutim, čak i sa sniženim standardima ne mogu se oteti utisku da je to Viktor Pelevin, da - ONAJ Viktor Pelevin i da bi ovo zaista bio odličan roman da ga je napisao neki anonimus kome je ovo prvi izlet u književnost, dakle da se radi o debitantskom djelu nepoznatog pisca. Ali ovako...

One of the better ones by him. Two big themes are explored in parallel - the usual clever analysis of media, ideology, brainwashing and the politics of submission and a more nuanced AI-flavored relationship with a custom-built and highly-configurable bio robot. The exploration of the latter is what made the book worthwhile for me - think of Spike Jonze's 'Her' but in a full-bodied (and very hot) manifestation. As you can imagine configuring your girlfriend for uber-high IQ and spirituality while maximizing her manipulative skills subliminal and otherwise (Kahneman on steroids) may end up pretty badly for you. Once you blur the lines between manipulator and manipulatee all sorts of interesting things can happen.

This is a 'hard sci-fi' book, but while I'm up for a bit of a challenge, this book is verging so much on non-sensical that I actually found it to be unreadable (I do not speak Russian and only have access to the translated text, so I am uncertain as to how much of this is due to the translation). Whilst there are certainly a number of made-up or amalgamated words (like 'discoursemonger'; one who stirs up discord amongst the people), the real confusion comes from recognisable words from 'Ancient Times' (our present) that are substituted to mean something else. There are people called Torn Durex, reference to things called sputniks (still not sure what these are), Manitou can mean 3 things - God, computer, money etc. etc.

There was also an overly cynical (and slightly problematic) tone to this book that I just didn't like. For example, the author taking a jab at overzealous feminists raising the age of consent to 46, and philophiles (defined as those who are sexually attracted to dolls, but that would be a pediophile so it's not even correct) being given equal rights to heterosexuals and homosexuals. The usual stuff about society being so shallow, sex-obsessed, all media coverage is evil blah blah blah is just so overdone and predictable now (and not, in my opinion, accurate). The initially interesting elements regarding the fusion of the military and the media, and Big Byz (the 'offworld' Byzantion, supposedly a satire of modern-day Russia) and its warmongering in the technologically disadvantaged Urkaina (comparisons to Ukraine are easy to make) were actually some of the dullest and opaque parts of the book.

Reading it is like pulling teeth and I just find my mind just drifting over the words, not actually taking any interest in what is being said. There is no plot and no characters worth paying attention to, so sadly, I have to put this book down and move on to something else. Not my cup of tea.

Note: I wrote this review late at night in a kind of stream of consciousness fashion, so apologies if it's difficult to follow; I appreciate the irony. That being said, I still think my review is easier to follow and makes more sense than this book.

Jah, see oli hea raamat kus mõnusalt mõttetihe tekst, palju värvikaid ideid ning ohtralt satiiri. Tuleviku vägagi äraspidise maailma ja terminoloogia loomine oli õnnestunud suurepäraselt, paremini kui nt Sorokinil "Sinises pekis", kus läks tulevikukeel liiga uute mõistetega ülekaetuks. Millest ma küll puudust tundsin oli sõnastik raamatu taga, poole teksti peal oleks tahtnud mõningaid termineid üle täpsustada. Aga see ei seganud õnneks märgatavalt, valvav enamus mõistetest oli isegi arusaadav. Tuleviku jumalateema oli nutikas aga kõige lahedamad arutlused keerlesid ilmselt teadvuse ja AI ümber. Ühesõnaga meeldis, ainsa miinusena läks ehk pseudodiibi generaator kohati üle võlli. Seepärast annan hindeks "really liked it" ja reserveerin "amazing" tiitli hetkel lugemisel olevale Väikemehele.

Не осилил. Забавно местами, но не захватило. Mеня почему-то совсем не проняли его словесные игры, типа Дао Песдын, Уркаина и т.д. Больше на баловство похоже, чем на литературу. Ассоциации с современным миром очевидны, но опять же, что в этом должно меня поразить? Что Пелевин заметил происходящее, приукрасил, набросал смешных названий, пару персонажей и связал все длинными пассажами о унылой стране орков и биг биза? Больше похоже на длинный предлинный пост в жж очередного тысячника.

I really enjoy contemporary Russian and Soviet Era science fiction. Nobody can whip up a quality dystopia as well as the Russians. In literature. I think our dystopia here in the US is a pretty high quality dystopia, but it's too hard to characterize the entirety of our national dystopia in a book. Ours is a dystopia you can make yourself comfortable in, so for some the US is a eutopia, and for those who wish to enter but can't it's a utopia. For the perceptive and humane intellectual it's a dystopia; if not for themselves, they see it is for others. Anyhow, it's not a fictive topia, so let's talk about the reality of Pelevin's fictive dystopia.

First of all, I'll mention then skip talking about real dystopias in the Ukraine and Russia's relationship to the Ukraine: If you followed international news over the years, you'll recognize the basics of this in S.N.U.F.F. I know too little to say more, or even to defend what I've just said. But there's obviously a reflection of real world politico-socio-economics going on there. But this isn't the level that impresses me-theres lots of ostensibly, obviously political dystopian writing going back forever, pre-Orwell.

It's the personal, phenomenological aspect of Pelevin's dystopia that I found amazing. The book explores the personal implication of themes like being and nothingness, anatman, AI and the utter powerlessness of society's image makers to exercise free will in choosing what to produce. Animal qualities like fish schooling and birds flocking are invoked! The relationship of the Global Orks to their country and that of the narrator's is troubling-and it's something very much at work in the real world.

You may come to see the rulers are as much cogs as the ruled, just more comfortable and very ugly. How like reality-and that's a quality of science fiction to look for as you read: how much, or how little, like reality and in what ways, and why has the author made those choices. Is the novelist more free to choose what imaginary worlds to create than film and video producers? I'd say so.

Ask those questions while you read. It's a bit troubling, as good writing ought to be(except maybe for greeting and birthday cards).

To read about spirituality and machine learning/expert systems NOT in an overly didactic book, nice. The early part of the book, well, much of the book, actually introduces all sorts of ideas in a very decent expository first person manner-and it doesn't seem forced at all. It's really like having an affable professor or a professional who really enjoys sharing about their work telling you about it using a mixture of stories and explanations. As the plot carries on, all sorts of Western and Eastern philosophy comes into play without intrusive vocabulary or didactic exposition: it just makes sense.

If you're unfamiliar with concepts like anatman and philosopher's zombies, machine learning, adaptive systems then good for you, don't worry! I sorta wish I didn't know about those things. The point is that the book makes perfect sense anyhow. But if you're inquisitive and like exploring those themes elsewhere, you'll find them very clearly, and intelligently articulated in S.N.U.F.F.

Too bad most people aren't widely read enough or familiar enough with the diverse topics in the book to appreciate the grand synthesis Pelevin creates. Really an exceptionally smart and explorative (is that a real word?) application of established sf genre writing.

2. Но это же Пелевин, и блиииииииииииииииииин!!!!! И это после "t"!!! Я, кажется, понял, в чём проблема: в своих лучших вещах (Чапаев, Generation, t) Пелевин
а) говорит с нами ВСЕРЬЁЗ, а не комикует. Нет, правда же: он в трёх упомянутых шедеврах ПРЕДЕЛЬНО серьёзен. Тем более, что тут, если честно, он пугает, а мне не страшно, то есть не очень-то и смешно.
б) "От прозренья их качало, с неба музыка звучала". Пелевин - он же был одним из самых музыкальных авторов, и в "t" снова, СНОВА зазвучала эта волшебная музыка! А здесь??

Ксения Михайловна Кульгаева так и написала в Твиттере: "Дорогой Виктор Олегович! Мы понимаем, что у Вас контракт с ЭКСМО. Но не пишите книги по нечётным годам! Давайте лучше мы, Ваши поклонники, будем скидываться и переводить на Ваш счёт по 400 рублей...")))

Uwaga, zawiera przekleństwa

Czytam te nową rosyjską fantastykę i zawsze myślę, że już lepiej, kiedy czytam starą, bo tam kobiet po prostu nie ma. A w tym nowym shicie za każdym razem muszę się nadziać na śmiertelnie poważne pierdolenie incela o naturze kobiet. Co jest nie tak z rosyjskimi pisarzami fantasy? Do tego mamy tutaj pretensjonalne posumowanie przywar naszego świata i tak bardzo niewysublimowane przekazanie poglądu autora, dosłownie walenie nam po ryju, co Autor Miał Na Myśli. Ta książka byłaby dziesięć razy lepsza, gdyby skrócić ją o połowę i dać czytelnikowi trochę manewru w interpretacji. Niet. Kobiety to nie ludzie, a świat to teatr. Subtelnie, kurwa.

Каждый раз приступая к чтению очередного рассказа или романа Пелевина задаюсь вопросом - Ну, что еще он придумает, что на этот раз, как закрутит сюжет, какие философствования и на какую тему?! и каждый раз попадаешь в его безумный, фантастический, психо-транс-экзо-прото-вместо-нарко-культурно-безцензурно-абсурдо... в его мир, который так детально прорисован, что даже сомнения не возникает: его мир - твой мир! S.N.U.F.F. это отражение нашей реальности.

S.N.U.F.F. is great! I simply adore Pelevin's feminine characters. Very fresh and sharp. I wish I read this first and then IFuck. I heard some women got insulted by this book for a particular insult of women nature or something. Totally disagree - in my opinion it's very flattering for women. Bitchy women, smart women, independent, straightforward and irresistible! :) And Pelevin is such a fierce romantic.

По-моему первая большая книжка Пелевина, посвященная любви и отношениям полов. "Священная книга оборотня" или "Empire V" эта тема все-таки не так сильна. В остальных ее почти не заметно. Здесь же с точностью наоборот: традиционные пелевинские темы вроде иллюзорности окружающего мира отходят здесь на второй, нет даже на третий план.
Впрочем, черт его знает, про что "Snuff" на самом деле.

NB: English edition. First Pelevin I've read and probably the first contemporary Russian SF I've read.
- Rampant deeply unpleasant misogyny and hate for other groups, endless speeches to the reader.
+ Some interesting ideas, rather ham-fistedly put across and some fun playing with language that must have given the translator fits.
Reminds me of early 90s Western SF (maybe early Zindell?)

I've been thinking about what my thoughts about this one a lot, and I'm not fully sure where they lie. This Book was very hot and cold for me. Some parts I found very engaging and visceral and other sections of the book I thought were long winded and ultimately redundant.

The book also engages with it's own lore quite strangely. Constantly winking and hinting at the history of this almost post- post apocalyptic world but never engaged with it thoroughly and provides no real detail which makes all the time dedicated to half explaining this feel pointless as it is never brought to a satisfying conclusion.

I liked the depression and bleak and hopeless grind of the media machine crushing humans who are willingly throwing themselves into it, sometimes literally and I thought some bits were funny and the end was good.

Но вот что значит быть «русским»?
Ездить на немецком автомобиле, смотреть азиатское порно, расплачиваться американскими деньгами, верить в еврейского бога, цитировать французких дискурсмонгеров, гордо дистанцироваться от «воров во власти» — и все стараться что-то украсть, хотя бы в цифровом виде. Словом, сердце мира и универсальный синтез всех культур.



Книжка скорее интересная нежели смешная. Самая, пожалуй, интересная мысль - разумеется из точки где мы сейчас находимся, это взаимоотношения Украины и Бизантиума.

Про то, что крутые вертухаи хранят сбережения только за границей, и сами норовят туда перебежать, про сбор младенцев для усыновления там же, про снафы наконец. Да, это все было, и не только в Уркаине)

Как сказал мне отец, Пелевин читается хорошо в самый момент выхода. И правда.

Все кто хотел уехать, сделали это много лет назад. Всё кто хотел смотреть "снафы" без цензуры - научились. Это давно уже не предмет дискурса.

Остаётся только потешить чсв отсылками в стиле "жижик".

Книжка хорошая. Читать не рекомендую.
