Maxie

Rate this book
Maxie is a dachshund with short legs, so he is not very tall nor very fast and not very fierce either. But he still wins a home with the Baron.

Unlike the fabulous & unforgettable The Duchess Bakes a Cake, Maxie is just ok. A standard tale: the underdog manages to triumph by applying his wits and determination. (In this case, the underdog is literally a dog.) Cute, but not a standout. The pictures are pretty good, but the writing is nothing special.

I loved this book when I was a kid. Maxie is a dachshund. He lives with an old couple and his mother, but he is old enough now that the old couple must find him a new home.

When a sign appears from the Baron saying that he needs a dog, and it must be fast, fierce, and big, the old couple know that Maxie is none of those things, but they take him to the castle to be tested anyway.

This is the story of how, even against the odds, if you do your best, you can win in the end. 5 Stars.

The illustrations were nice and attractive
and appropriate.

The plot was somewhat clever and inventive.

A very nice picture book which seems to have
become somewhat forgotten. Apparently
because it was published in 1956.

Children in general would enjoy it.
