At the end of the 19th century a strange and unexplained medical phenomenon starts to occur - people being to 'clump' together. What starts out as two individuals conjoined at the skin soon snowballs into groups of three, four, and upwards. How large can these clumps grow? And when, if at all, will the clumping stop?
Synopsis: The year is 1898 and an unexplained medical phenomenon begins to occur which causes people to begin "clumping" together. Two becomes three, which turns into a few, then a dozen or more. What is causing this and how can it be stopped (if it can be stopped at all)?
Thoughts: This turned out to be an awesome hidden gem of a story. I came across it while browsing the Absurdist Fiction e-books on Hoopla and was immediately drawn in by the Junji Ito-esque premise. With some obvious (and humorous, at times) parallels to the pandemic, it also had some good commentary on individuality and personal freedom. I would absolutely love to see this as a graphic novel!
I enjoyed this short story so much that I purchased the Kindle version after reading it on Hoopla. Can't wait to check out more from Scott Tierney.
