This compiles all of Jim Steranko's Marvel work outside of his Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD series. It contains a two part X-Men story where Polaris finds out her father is Magneto and a 3 part Captain America story where Rick Jones becomes the new Bucky and they go up against Hydra. There's also a short horror story and a romance story along with some covers.

Steranka's art is really inventive, especially for the 1960's. I love his use of pop art and inventive use of shadow and color. The things he could do with the 4 color printing process are outstanding. His comics really stand out compared to other comics of the era.

In the late Sixties two comic artist/writers liberated comics from the kiddie-camp doldrums and elevated the form to an adult level: Neal Adams with the amazing Deadman for DC Comics and Jim Steranko for Marvel Comics, who revived the then-failing Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

While this volume doesn't compile the complete S.H.I.E.L.D. stories (There's two volumes for that) it compiles a wide swath of his Marvel output, which includes his amazing takes on the X-Men, Captain America, generic horror and romance comics. His incredible fusion of then-current pop art mixed with Daliesque surrealism is positively eye-popping. You've never seen the X-Men or Captain America captured quite like this, and probably never will!

Jim Steranko is a superb artist who was instrumental in the evolution of the comic medium in the late 60's/early 70's. This book showcases this well known artist's talent with some of his best work in some of his lesser known work, such as in X-Men and Captain America. His creation Madame Hydra, makes her first appearance in the three issues of Captain America, and he helps develop the the character of Magneto in X-Men.

Steranko is a genius.

This book collects all of the stories and covers he made for Marvel Comics except for his groundbreaking run on Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., which is collected in its own book. These stories include his run on X-Men with Arnold Drake and Captain America with Stan Lee, as well as a romance story and a horror story.

If you couldn't tell from the opening line, Jim Steranko is my favorite American comic book artist. Ever. His work is always filled with unique storytelling and breath-taking art. All of the art in this book is avant-garde. Steranko's art is incredibly unique and cool, even almost 50 years later.

As someone who wants to make comics professionally, I constantly look to Steranko's art for inspiration in storytelling. If you enjoy Frank Miller's Daredevil or the earlier-mentioned Nick Fury, then you will definitely need to read this book. I am surprised that there are not many artists today who try to tell stories like Steranko did all the way back in the 60's.

Just Read the 3 steranko captain america stories. (Via electronic Comixology guided view platform) --The 3 issues for the most part are excellent, his writing was much better than it had been on SHIELD, which i found really crappy, juvenile & tedious. A lot of growth here and expanding of the comic art-form in the Captain America issues, although they still had some "cheese-tastic" Marvel-isms occassionally reminding you this was 1968 or 1969. The 2 Steranko xmen stories i read a year ago when i bought the actual archival paper issues for a good chunk of coin. Lol.... Good stuff!!!

If you introduced to me before I had entered puberty, this is what I'd have thought sex was.

Trippy pop-art meets surrealism. Posturing, posturing and more posturing.
