About the author

Dave Earley’s life passion is to know, love, and glorify God and be used by Him to make a difference by reaching as many people as deeply as possible in the least amount of time. For twenty years that passion was lived out by planting and pastoring a healthy, growing multiplying church. Recently Dave accepted God’s call to move from local to global impact. His role has shifted from being a pastor to training pastors, from starting a church to equipping church planters, from leading small groups to developing small group leaders, and from pastoring the congregation of a local church to encouraging the followers of Jesus in many congregations.

Dave’s unique blend of passionate practicality and innocence, intensity, and idealism have given him a platform to many through teaching, training, writing, and speaking.

Dave’s passion for a vibrant personal adventure with God has resulted in several books, including The 21 Most Effective Prayers in the Bible (Barbour publishing, 2005) and Living In His Presence: The Immanuel Factor (Bethany House,2005). The 21 Most Encouraging Promises in the Bible (2006), The 21 Most Amazing Truths about Heaven, (2006) The 21 Reasons Bad Things Happen to Good People (2007) and The 21 Most Dangerous Questions in the Bible (2007). As a nationally recognized expert on small group ministry, he has written several popular books for small group leaders: Eight Habits of Effective Small Group Leaders (2001) and Turning Members into Leaders (2003) and The Pocket Guide to Leading a Small Group: 50 Ways to Help You and Your Group Grow (2007). Those books are published by Cell Resource Network and have been translated into several languages.


Dr. Dave Earley is Chairman of the Department of Pastoral Ministries and Church Expansion at Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. Prior to teaching at Liberty, Dave was the founding sr. pastor of the New Life Church of Gahanna-Columbus, Ohio. New Life started in his basement with 12 people and grew to nearly 2,000 a week in attendance with over a 100 small groups. (www.enewlife.com)

Dave, and his wife, Cathy, have three highly active teenaged sons, Daniel, Andrew, and Luke. They enjoy rafting, biking, hiking, hanging out, and art.

While there were certain parts of this book that grated on me (usually simplistic attempts to be funny that fell flat), this book was an encouragement to me at a time when I find myself struggling with unbelief. The chapter where Earley outlines that nothing significant is ever accomplished without prayer (using a passage from another book written by David Jeremiah) was profound. From that point on, I was deeply touched by his insights and use of Scripture.

Dave Earley writes this book in an approachable manner will reasonable theology. Sometimes he went places I wouldn't, but I don't think he ever steps out of orthodox evangelical Christian beliefs. My only major wish is that I wish the epilogue chapter was put in the middle for those who are struggling with the prayers.

This is a powerful little book I'll plan to read again and again! Some of them resonate a little deeper based on life experience, but the Biblical stories as their source is solid, and well developed by the author. Modern day stories and personal experiences bring these prayers even more meaningful!

These 21 prayers are definitely worth committing to memory, and since they're so short, it should be an easy task!

Because we were reading the book together in a group, we were asked to read only a certain number of chapters over a number of weeks skipping around as we did so, I suppose in order to highlight certain prayers. Afterwards, I read the chapters not included in these weeks and actually came away appreciating this book even more. I've started to adapt it to ladies' Bible studies that I'm currently doing on a foreign field so that they, too, can be touched & convicted as I have been by the study on these biblical prayers.

Earley provides an encouraging list of prayer do's and don'ts, overwhelmingly in favor of do's. I don't know that I'd agree on which are the top prayers in the bible. That's a personal judgment. But Earley does a find job of justifying why these prayers are effective. He presents basic principles and detailed examples.

I agree with another reviewer who commented that a quote by Dr. David Jeremiah gave great insight as to why prayer, and therefor this book, is important: Dr. Jeremiah couldn't find a single example of God's ministry that wasn't instigated by prayer. A little bit of [Jas 4:2 NIV] You do not have because you do not ask God.
