An odd but enjoyable Harlequin. The story just wasn't sure what it was...
Mac is a 38 yr old but reads more like 58. He's a set-in-his-ways loner, recently retired from the military and the US Marshall's service. He's recently returned from helping to bring a drug lord to justice, and recovering from injuries. While recuperating in his hotel, an unknown woman drops off her little 5 yr old daughter with a note pinned to her jacket. Apparently, the girl's name is Ellie and she's his step brothers daughter, but the girl doesn't speak and has obviously had a hard life. Trying to locate her mother, he finds his step brother's first wife, Banner. Banner is a teacher taking time off to close up a family cottage on a remote island off North Carolina. At this time of year she is the only resident on the island, until Mac shows up with Ellie and a lot of accusations and assumptions. She's 30ish and divorced from Rory, the child's father, for well over 5 years. I liked the MCs, including the little girl. Gradually Mac learns how wrong he was, but for a while, they are stuck on the island with Banner. One thing leads to another and eventually they act on their mutual attraction. There is also some evidence that they are not the only people on the island, as they had at first thought...
The ending was sweet but a bit anti-climactic. mild spoiler I was still happy with the romance and convinced that he loved her. His declarations at the end were quite sweet and there's a lovely epilogue.
So don't pick this one up if you are looking for suspense and intrigue!
A child is dumped on Mac and he sets out to find the mother only to learn he has got the wrong woman. Now they are stuck on an island during a storm and have to wait for transportation to get back to the mainland so Mac can track down the right woman. Of course, the problem is he has fallen for Banner and little Ellie. What is a man to do?
I enjoyed this story. Mac is curmudgeonly. Banner is reserved. They are an interesting combination. Add in Ellie and her muteness and an unusual bond is created between the three which I hoped would become more. Fortunately all worked out in the end and I got what I wanted.
