Recently I have been reading alot of romance suspense and when this popped into my in box I was quite pleased to see that one of my favourite authors has taken the plunge with her first suspense book and with a new publisher for her as well.

Stone Canyon is actually a ranch owned by the Stone family for years now, one of the main premise of not only the ranch but their life is helping people who are down and out for whatever reason and they have passed this principle onto their son Micah. This was no hardship for Micah himself because this was how he himself came to be at the ranch.

When Mrs Stone dies Micah is barely managing from the loss, so when he gets a letter telling him that his mother was murdered and she knew who did it he is livid. The letter while quite detailed does not give him answers for those he has to find Private Detective Able Kenton to get the rest of the information that he needs.

Meeting Able only seem to compound Micah's ire, because even those he is grieving he is still furious at his mother for living in fear for weeks and him on the ranch getting on with the day to day business. Unfortunately for Micah the mystery does not end with Able, it doesn’t even start with him either - what it does is set a steamroller in motion that will eventually see people dying before it rolls to a stop.

Able is a pretty decent investigator left with just enough information to be curious but not enough to make him step out side of his remit as an investigator. When he meets Micah, guilt is his first emotion because he probably/could have done something with the info he has and none of them would be where they are now. His second emotion his lust because Micah is one sexy cowboy and Able want some of that.

It does not take long before both men are burning up the sheets, but their time together is not the stuff of happiness and light because someone knows the can of worm on a evil that has gone on too long is about to be blown open and they will do anything to keep the lid on – including murder.

STONE CANYON is certainly something different from what I am used to from Ms Miles. Literally from the first few pages Ms Miles laid out her game plan. This is a murder mystery plain and simple with a romance that might not makes it, not because there is no interest but because they all may die before they get the chance to feel what’s it’s like to make a go of a relationship.

All the old predictables that I am used to from Miles are there in STONE CANYON, the cause that the main protags are either fighting for or against, the super sweet characters and of course the author tosses in a pet this time – A huge one at that. Some people might find this off putting , however predictables are like welcome arms for me with some authors – so I really like that aspect of the book.

The main characters themselves were likable enough and I started off liking them alot however as the plot evolved they fritter out to just being backdrop because as much as I knew Micah’s story, Able was a little harder to accept as I really knew nothing about him.

There were two young lads in this book - Avery and BJ whose story runs right along side Able and Micah. I really enjoyed having them in the book and to be honest they held much of the book together for me. That said, they were young men and yet I felt their characters were written like teenagers and I ended up getting frustrated with how peppy they were.
Along with those four there are other characters that were important to the plot and some that just made up the numbers, After awhile I stopped trying to figure out who was who and really wanted to find out who was making life miserable for a whole lot of people.

This might be just my own pet peeve, but there was an over load of “GAY” in this book, not the people – there were a few of those yes, but the assumption of what gay is like and that really drove me crazy. There was the cute apartment the awesome pictures, the kissy touchy me and of course the obligatory pet, too much.

The sex scenes weren’t overly graphic or even too much for me, they were just as expected to be honest however, Avery and BJ journey to intimacy was more a story in itself and I really enjoyed watching that side of their relationship come together.

Lovers of romance suspense will have issues with this one, the tension was not there, the details were not defined enough and as a reader I was not privy to much. While I thought the toing and froing from big city to small town was a nice touch once the action came to them it was too easy and wrapped up too conveniently for me to say wow.

Bottom Line
The plot is a new area for me with Ms Miles and I really liked the murder mystery concept, It had possibilities. The first third of this book held together, with mayhem, murder and a early morning scare – the later sections however just got overrun with the personal issues of the multiple cast and the ineptitude of the bad guys.

STONE CANYON didn’t come together as it could have as the good guys were too cute and the bad guys were too disorganized even in their stupidity. I say this because the bulk of this book is the mystery.

Lovers of Miles work you will immediately see the difference in this body of work compared to her other stuff, while not darker it is a different path, but missing alot of the stuff that usually leaves me with a smile. First time readers I would suggest starting with something else by this author before venturing into this new world that Miles has step into.

This is a mystery/thriller novel that has not really mystery; I use to know AKM Miles for her highly emotional story, and that side of her work is still here, so as is the idyllic gay paradise some characters managed to create even if the outside world is bad and against them. AKM Miles has often the theme of the experienced gay man who wants to help other young gay men as someone else helped him in the past.

In this novel it’s the time of Micah; his personal story has just that tad of drama to make him sympathetic for the reader, but actually it’s not really a tragedy: when he was 16 years old he was kicked out of home by his abusive father and brother, and his mother didn’t interfere; this could have been Micah’s tragedy, but it was actually his lucky day. Micah was “adopted” by Ted and Lizbet, a couple without sons and owners of a big ranch, the Stone Canyon. The place became almost a youth shelter for trouble kids, even more when Ted suddenly passed away and Lizbet decided to live in the city. Now Lizbet is dead and Micah discovers it’s not accidentally.

The one to help him solving the non-mystery (since actually all the clues were in a letter Lizbet wrote to Micah) is city private investigator Able. Now in your traditional romance, cowboys and PIs are not a usual pair because they are two alpha male characters, and you cannot put two bulls in the same pen. But as soon as the reader meets Able, it’s clear that he is not your traditional former cop-turned PI; actually Able is a gentle soul, probably even too gentle for his chosen career. He is also the classic gay character (even if not flamboyant): beautiful loft with artistic prints on the walls, a dog that is more a son than a pet, a supporting family that is more than happy for him to have finally found a good man (actually this is probably not your usual characteristic for a gay character, but it gives you an idea of the type of man Able is).

So there is actually no question on who will be the alpha man of this couple, and Micah immediately takes the role of the protector, that is a strange thing considering Able’s role in the story; in any case from when they meet to practically all the novel until the end, Micah and Able are joint to the hip, always together, sharing more romance than adventure. The resulting sex scenes are quite hot, there is no shy virgin between the two of them and even if there is no actually declaration of eternal love or forever commitment, it’s almost assumed that they are now a couple.

The tender and first love feeling is demanded to Momm, one of the young man Micah is helping on the ranch; he has some self-issues to resolve but he will be helped by a patient and caring lover. I sometime got distracted from Micah and Able by the evolution of Momm’s story, and I think that it happened also to the author, I clearly remember a scene that was an apex for Micah and Able’s relationship, but the author shifted the focus on Momm, that was in the same house, only some rooms far from the two.

In the end I think this novel is more aimed to a full romance reader, someone who appreciated good feelings and homemade pie ;-)

While this had a lot of stuff I like—action, danger, suspense, a hospital scene and a dog—it was so dumb in so many ways. I almost DNF it several times but I told someone I would read it so I did. I’m not going make a coherent review because I don’t want to take the time to put my notes together.

So much about this was improbable, straining credulity. Like the extent of abuse in Momm’s past (at least he mentioned that there were some good foster parents out there, he just didn’t have any) and how well he and his foster siblings turned out after it, the huge amount of money the PI had to have had (and he was the kind that was still trying to catch adulterers in the act, not some big name) and everyone finding love so fast.

God these guys moved fast. They were already expressing interest within the first few minutes of meeting and propositioning each other a few hours later. A couple of hours after that, Micah was thinking this was the beginning of a relationship without even consulting Able.

I like that both sets of men like guys their own size.

Some head hopping.

Things are just too convenient including a secret passageway.

There is too much talking. There’s a lot of talking about what they’re doing or going to do rather than just doing it. It’s like they’re narrating what they’re doing. Direct quotes:
“I’m going to make some notes of my own. Here, let me get you some pens and you can do the same.”

And

“Okay, let’s at least sit here on this couch and spread the papers over the table.”
They even talked about starting to kiss.

The only two women in the entire book are the one murdered (who defined herself based on her husband) and a secretary who’s pathetic. No siblings were female, Abel’s mother was dead too. The only other women even mentioned were incredibly evil foster parents in the past.

B.J. (yes, he gave himself that nickname) is not respecting Avery’s asexuality even though they say he is. He’s the one to suggest taking it further. When Avery gets “stuck” he sort of pushes. He says he’ll wait as long as Avery needs even if it takes a year. What if it’s forever? Avery then says he wants to be normal, to want to be touched so B.J. takes Avery’s hand and puts it on his own dick and has him start stroking it. (Later B.J. redeems himself.)

TSTL. They were just followed and choose to go home? They trust some guy because he looks scared when there’s been murder?

Way too much sex.

Inconsistencies/plot holes. A lawyer owns the whole floor of a tall office building but it’s only him and his one secretary and an intern? How’d the bad guys know which firm would be used? One MC’s remodeled home only has windows eight feet up? That would never be allowed in work permits and if he didn’t use permits… And he does nothing with the lower level, not even a garage? I don’t think the author gets how large 15,000 feet is. You wouldn’t have your kitchen on one end of the rectangle and your bedroom and living room on the other.
“Sure, I’ll take another beer.”
“OK, see you in a while.”
He says he can smell supper across that way through the other rooms. No way. A dog is not going to “love” running around an indoor space in a warehouse with nothing in it by himself. He needs things to smell, to chase, to look at. He needs a place to relieve himself and to mark. He needs the outdoors.

Well at least I finished it.

Re-read Challenge for MM Romance Group: Stone Canyon is what I remember it being; a well written, simple, romantic, suspenseful contemporary western. The characters were genuine and stout, while the suspenseful drama carefully unfolds with the help of strong secondary characters. Loved when I first read it.... loving it now.

Micah Stone is still reeling from the death of his Mother when he receives a letter from her. In the letter he learns that she was murdered, the reason for it and who might have been behind it all. Furious, and also a bit hurt that she didn't come to him for help, he seeks out Able Kenton, the private investigator who'd been working for her. The men are instantly attracted to each other and as they work closely together their feelings deepen. From strangers to friends and then to lovers their emotional connection surprises them both.

The action in this book moves back and forth from the city to Micah's family ranch, Stone Canyon, as they follow clues. Along the way there will be bodies, bombings, kidnappings and shootings. With a wonderful cast of characters, seriously hot sex scenes, sweet and tender moments and lots of action throughout this was an entertaining story well worth reading. As expected from an AKM Miles story at the end the bad guys pay for their crimes and the good guys get their happy ending.

What I liked...

As with the previous books I've read from this author I really liked the characters. Even if they are a bit 'too perfect' to be real they are interesting and likable men and I enjoyed reading their story. Micah is a caring man who's been through a lot in his life and his nurturing personality is evident throughout. Able is a warm and caring family man and their instant attraction, deepening feelings and sexual chemistry made for an entertaining read. The supporting characters are interesting additions to the story and the interactions between them are funny and heartwarming.

The pairing between Momm, a young man with a very troubled past, and Bobby Jaye, the young man who brings Micah the key to take down the bad guys, is sweet and romantic. Able's father and brothers, the ranch workers and even the homeless man outside of Able's loft all add an interesting layer to this story. Ms. Miles' customary emphasis on romance, family and acceptance is at work once again in her latest story.

What I didn't like...

While the set up for the murder mystery/suspense was there it ultimately didn't work as well as it could have. There isn't really a mystery to solve as the bad guys and their motivations are quickly identified, despite the action there's not much suspense/tension either. The bad guys end up giving the impression of ineptitude as Micah and Able, with help from their friends/family, are able to take down the criminals with barely no assistance from law enforcement.

Overall...

Stone Canyon is an enjoyable read although it missed out a bit on its potential. The characters are well drawn, the relationships between them interesting and the sweet HEA ending is trademark AKM Miles. Although readers looking for a true mystery/suspense may be disappointed fans of the author are sure to enjoy this one.

There were so many facets to this book it is hard to know where to begin. Micah, the main character finds out that his adoptive mother has been murdered at the beginning of the book the main story of the book is finding and bringing to justice of the murderer. AKM Miles is very clever in introducing new characters along the way and by the middle of the book you feel as though these are people you would personally want in your life. The story is set in two locales - the City and Stone Ranch and as the story progresses, alternate chapters were set in each location which made me laugh as every other chapter started "Meanwhile back at the ranch..."

Although other reviewers have said that the suspense was not as great as it should have been, I very much enjoyed the ride and hoped that everything would turn out well in the end, so much so that I just could not put it down as the story came to its climax. It left me wanting to know more about the Micah/Able and Avery/BJ relationships and also more about Ables' family as well as the photographer who was taken to Stone Ranch but whose character was not fully realized.

All I can say is that this book does not pretend to be "War and Peace" but I found it a terrific read.

A suspense mm romance with two romances.

The story started well, and I got into the suspense and the romance between the two MC's. A lot happened, there was a lot of wondering what's around the corner, but somewhere in the middle the story lost its momentum and got boring. The suspense was not there anymore, and by that point the MC's already had an established relationship, so the story felt a bit drawn out.

There was a bit of fun added when following two side characters and their nice love story too, so you got two happily ever after in one book.

Miles has once again created a cast of characters whom I love. Micah and Able are sweet and sexy, but I fell in love with Momm, one of the secondary characters. He is adorable, funny, and stronger than he gives himself credit for being.

This book is like a 2-for-1 special because you get two great romances. The main one is between Micah and Able. Theirs is full of mystery and suspense and getting hurt a LOT. The second is about Momm and it is full of sweetness and heartache and comfort. I enjoyed all of the characters in the story and the suspense was written pretty well. AKM Miles writes great comfort reads and this one is right up there with the others I have read.

I really liked the story although I found it confusing that Micah seemed to be the more alpha of the two main characters. He was more take charge than Able who was the "P.I." I loved Mommquist/Avery. His and BJ's secondary love story was soo tender. Very romantic even throughout all of the suspense and action.

This is a great read. I really enjoyed the story line. I just wish I could afford the kind of apartment Abel had in Oklahoma City. The loft sounded just fabulous. I'm not sure I would want the responsibility of looking after the Stone Canyon ranch but it sounds like it would be a nice relaxing spot too. Now only if fiction were real...Ahh well.

I don't care that this was cheesy. I don't care that it was insta-love. I don't care that there really wasn't a mystery. I don't care that Micah Stone was telling the Sheriff what to do. I don't care that Micah was calling the shots when the undercover cops showed up. I don't care that Able didn't do too much PI work.

It's AKM Miles and I loved it :)

I thoroughly enjoyed this! Micah and Able are wonderful MCs but Momm and Bobby Jaye have stolen my heart. I love finding another author to add to my favorites! Great read and I'm looking forward to reading more of this author's work.

I really enjoyed this book. I did have a hard time believing that someone would want to build luxury homes 80 miles west of Lawton.
