Seventeen-year-old Lydia finds herself at the home of “Aunt Patricia” in Colorado, wondering why a man in a blue van is trying to kill them on the road as they drive to the ranch. Years ago, Lydia heard her mom, Maria, say that a grandfather had sent a baby to live there. Ever since then, Lydia has wondered who she really is and has longed for scraps of knowledge about where she came from. Is her biological mother still alive? Why did fate turn her over into Maria and Martin’s care? As her aunt gives her pages of a manuscript to read, Lydia sees that her birth mother was tricked into marrying a man who claimed to be a preacher but was actually using everybody he could to raise money—a monster in disguise who ruled with an iron fist and duped money from poor widows or anybody else he could sucker.
