"Knitting Knee-Highs" is an amazing book for intermediate to advanced knitters. There's a great diversity in the patterns, some are very bold color work patterns, while others are subtle and textured in neutral colors.

I absolutely love how the author encourages the reader to try new things. She doesn't just say, "Oh you could make these socks shorter," she gives you clear instructions on how to adapt any of her knee high patterns to socks or legwarmers. I'm impressed with the number of patterns in the book. There are 20 patterns but each one has at least one variation. With all of these options, you're bound to find something you love.

I'm fascinated by her suggestion to use positive and negative to flip flop the colors and make coordinating but not matching socks. I really can't wait to try this, the examples that she has shown are gorgeous. The patterns do look challenging, they probably aren't for a beginning knitter, but I think with patience, an intermediate knitter like me would be up for the challenge.

I loved the descriptions at the beginning of each pattern where the author tells about her inspiration for the pattern and techniques. The photos are clear and detailed and she shows you how using different color combinations can dramatically change the look.

I can't wait to try out a pair of non-matching knee highs next fall, until then I may try one of her adorable anklets with a scalloped fold over cuff.

The old time skill of knitting handmade socks is growing in popularity. Along with it, an unending array of new sock yarns, circular needles, tools, and books are filling the sock knitter's desire need to create something handmade and one-of-a-kind. I've seen a lot of sock books. Knitting Knee-Highs is the first book that I've seen that is dedicated to this favorite sock style.

Knitting Knee-Highs includes lots of detailed instructions, charts, and a great chapter explaining how to make your own plain vanilla knee-high pattern or adapt your favorite sock pattern to make knee-highs. The fitting advice is thorough. This book is jam packed with lovely artful photos. Every knee-high, sock, anklet and legwarmer is shown in beautiful detail.

The beauty of the lace designs and the intricate color work designs make this book an excellent choice for confident knitters. These are sit down and concentrate socks. There are 18 patterns, each with at least one variation for regular socks, anklets, or legwarmers. Lots of choices for a plain vanilla girl! This one book could keep you busy through the end of the year.

While Knitting Knee-Highs is not a book for sock beginners, I feel confident that with Mrs. Barns' instructions, plain vanilla girls can learn to knit colorwork and lace socks in first simple and later complex designs. I think it's worth the $22.99 price.

*Excellent photos

*Friendly tone

*Adaptable

*Clear instructions

I consider knee socks to be socks that come all the way up to your knees and a lot of the socks in this book aren't that tall. But there are quite a lot of pretty and useful patterns to knit.

From the Goodread's book synopsis:

"In this book, author Barb Brown takes sock knitting to new heights by teaching you the ins and outs of knitting knee-highs, a popular sock, but one that needs more explanation than most books and magazines give it.

Here, in the first book on the topic, you will learn how to size these socks as you knit them, with 20 great patterns to pick from. Each of the 20 knee-high patterns comes with a variation that features that design in a different color and style of sock, perfect for knitters who want to mix up their sock drawer.

I was super excited when I received this book from Booksneeze.

My initial observation is that this is a sock knitting book geared toward intermediate-to-advanced knitters. The patterns in the book consist of intricate colorwork and/or lace sock patterns. There is just one pattern that involves a pattern made using different combinations of the knit and purl stitches. Oh and everything is charted. So if you are someone that likes to follow written patterns, this is not the book for you. Sorry.

However, the colorwork patterns, although a bit intimidating to me right now, are gorgeous! I've already put a few of the lace patterns on my list of sock patterns to knit and have made a mental note about a few of the colorwork ones for when I have more confidence. These are not patterns that I ever see going out of style.

There are two things I loved about this book. First, the author provides a section in the beginning of the book on creating your own custom-fit knee-high socks and help on converting a normal, mid-calf sock pattern to knee-highs. The other is the author provides a variation on each of the knee-high to either regular socks and/or legwarmers. So although there are 20 patterns in the book, the variations give you close to 60 patterns in total! There is a lot of helpful information in this book and I would recommend it to someone who is already a intermediate-advanced knitter or someone who would like a challenge.

The book begins with a knee-high formula for you to use to get an accurate fit. There is also info that helps you convert a normal sock pattern to a knee high and tips and tricks for custom fitting. This information will prove very helpful in creating knee-highs for yourself or others.

Each pattern in this book is shown in at least two different ways. One pattern will be knit as a knee high and then converted to an ankle sock. Another will be a knee high and converted to a regular sock or a leg warmer. I LOVE this idea because really not everyone in the world likes knee highs and it is so great to see what else you can actually do with the pattern and how different each one looks.

The majority of the patterns are fair isle but there are also a few lace ones, some kilt hoses as well. I wouldn't rate this as a beginner sock knitting book but for those who enjoy fair isle AND socks its a great resource. I already have several patterns picked out that I want to knit and could see myself really using all of the patterns with the various adaptions mentioned in the book.

The book uses a great variety of well known yarns although I will prefer to knit mine with mostly solid colours because I'm just a solids kind of girl. The one thing that did erk me about the book was the photography.... I mean really I don't think anyone plans on wearing fair isle knit knee-highs with an evening dress...or maybe thats just me.

All in all this is a wonderful book and will get much use when my sock mojo kicks up again.

Book Review: Knitting Knee-Highs Sock Styles from Classic to Contemporary, by Barb Brown

I would suggest the book: Knitting Knee-Highs – Sock Styles from Classic to Contemporary, by Barb Brown to an advanced knitter who both knits and reads patterns well. I decided to check this book out because I am very interested in knit socks and would love to knit a pair for myself or my daughter. I did find that it contained more advanced patterns that what I am ready for. I will need to teach myself more about knitting and reading patterns before I am able to tackle any patterns in this book. On a positive note, the photos of each sock are very clear and elegant looking. I also enjoyed how the author wrote a little blurb about each sock style and its background – sometimes even including the reason behind the name of specific socks. This is definitely a book I will recommend and even pass along to my mother – in – law who is an avid knitter and sock maker.

There are lots of great colorwork patterns here, very traditional. One classic Turkish pattern is featured. Some lace work. One that I think I may use.

The best part: they show how each pattern can modified to an anklets, a sock or a legwarmer!
