What began as a fairytale honeymoon in 1857 for John and Laura Foster aboard the steamship SS Vandervere becomes a nightmare when a hurricane causes their ship to sink into the murky depths of the Atlantic. Laura finds herself with the other women and children aboard a sailing ship while John and a hundred other men drift on the open sea on anything they could grab as the Vandervere went down. Suspecting her John is gone but still daring to hope for a miracle, Laura must face the possibility of life alone--and meeting her new in-laws without their son if she ever reaches New York.

The Deepest Waters by Dan Walsh is a book you will love to read and reread. This book was inspired by a true story and I found it fascinating. I really like books written around a true story. There’s something about truth and fiction together that really makes great reading. I like the tenderness, compassion and love of God the two main characters have. Each chapter is full of action, suspense and tender feelings. The Deepest Waters is not only one story, but several in one book. This is the third book Dan Walsh has written and in my opinion it is his best yet. The Deepest Waters is about a shipwreck in the 1800’s with chaos and trouble, and also the heartbreaking parting of newlyweds (John and Laura.) The ship went down because of a hurricane, where only one hundred three women and children were rescued. Four hundred of the men had to remain on the injured ship On the Cutlass where the women and children were rescued a slave, Micah, befriended Laura. In this story you will see miracle after miracle. What makes this even more intriguing is that John never told his family he was married or bringing his wife back and John never got along with them. So Laura has to face this all alone, but she has God and isn’t alone. Another thing I really liked is the note from the author that told of all of the true things that did happen and it was amazing. So yes, I highly recommend this book and will keep it for my private collection. I really love such a tender, tear jerking story. Very sweet read.
I received my free copy from Donna Hausler from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group for my review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission's 16 CFR, Part 255
Two and a half stars (rounding up). This historical fiction, loosely based on a true story, was written in a style that was just too simple and straightforward for me, at a time when I was hoping for something more complex and layered. The love story is very tame: the couple is already married but spends most of the book apart from each other, due to the shipwreck. The women and children were rescued very quickly, but there weren't enough lifeboats and the men were, with very few exceptions, left to fend for themselves in the ocean.
Another beef: most of the tension in the plot gets resolved a little too quickly and easily.
This is "inspirational fiction," which may be either a plus or a minus for you.
After reading The Homecoming I was excited to see that Dan Walsh had published another book. When I saw that it was a sea-faring adventure I must admit I was a bit apprehensive. While I enjoy new plots, characters, and settings, I didn't want to read a book that was so inundated with plot-specific jargon that I didn't understand half of what was going on; I needn't have worried, though. Deepest Waters has a five star plot and an amazing setting.
John and Laura Foster are on their honeymoon when they are shipwrecked. Choosing to send the women and children along first, the men are left to fend for themselves amidst a hurricane. The women and children are picked up by a different ship and continue to make their way towards their original destination of New York City. The women and children struggle with mourning their dead husbands while trying to plan what to do when they arrive at their port. Add in some treachery, a thief, a few twists and turns, and don't leave out a couple of miracles and you have one of the best fiction books I have read in a very long time!
Dan Walsh has outdone himself with this book. It is a breath of fresh air that is sure to leave any fiction guru eager for more of Walsh's writing. Based on historic events Deepest Waters weaves believable characters with a plot that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Just when you think the story couldn't get any better...it does! I give this book five stars and recommend it to anyone!

A copy of Deepest Waters was provided for review purposes by Revell. I was not compensated for this review in any other way and the opinions expressed are 100% my own.
The Deepest Waters is a wonderful story, inspired by an actual shipwreck that occurred in 1857 off the coast of North Carolina. Dan Walsh has taken the factual framework from a real-life tragic event and created a compelling and ultimately heart-warming tale. When newlyweds John and Laura Foster are separated on their honeymoon voyage, their hopes and dreams for a long life together are shattered. But that is where the real story begins… hopes of rescue are tempered by the hardships of facing the future alone. Vivid supporting characters are introduced along the way, and multiple storylines keep the pages turning quickly.
For me, this book had the feel of an old Hollywood movie – and I mean that as a great compliment. I can envision this story up on a big screen. The men are (mostly) gallant, the scoundrels are deplorable and the women are feminine but possess inner strength. The shipwreck and its fallout provided much of the drama that unfolded, but the author also did a fantastic job of describing the emotions and inner thoughts of the characters. The message of faith and hope and discovering what-really-matters-in-life came through without sounding preachy or overdone. And there were enough surprises to keep me smiling between the tears and tissues.
I like his style of writing and also like the fact that this novel was inspired by a documentary about the SS Central America, a paddle-wheel steamship that sank off of North Carolina in Sept. 1857. Most of his characters are fictitious and most of his plot points as well. But, many of the incidents did really happen. He researched a number of books about the shipwreck and then began his novel. It is written from a Christian perspective as are his other novels as he was a pastor for 25 years.
This is the third book I have read by this author, and I have loved them all. This may be my favorite so far. I like Dan Walsh's writing style. He uses different points of view, including secondary characters, and pulls them all together beautifully at the end. There's a good message in his stories, and he always shows how God is working in amazing ways. Make sure you read the author's notes at the end. I knew this book was based on a true event, but I didn't realize the part that shows God at work was true as well. I assumed that was fiction.
I loved this book. The plot was based on true events, which the author explains at the end, which makes the story more amazing. The characters were so relatable and diverse. The women and children who lost their husbands/fathers. Those who held out hope. Those who lost nothing. Estrangement. Reunitings. Revenge. Survival. This book really had it all without getting sappy on romance. I am ready to go looking for the sunken treasure... Who is with me?
This is another wonderful book by Dan Walsh. The fact that it is inspired by true events makes it even better. There are some storylines that make you think "nah that's unbelievable" only to find out that really did happen. Great book! Read it you won't be disappointed.
I loved this book! I didn't want to put it down but had to force myself when I couldn't stay awake any more. I finished it the next day though. so don't pick this up till you have free time to just lose yourself in the book. God is a real and important part of the lives of the main characters. You get to watch as they grow in their faith too. It's kind of like getting a glimpse of what God's doing behind the scenes. The author did a great job and I highly recommend this book! Knowing it's inspired by a true story makes it even better. I really appreciated the way the author tells you at the end which parts are true and which aren't. That's a great plus!
The story was good, and in fact I found myself riveted to the book and finished it in one day. A newly married couple are sailing sail to New York so she can meet his family. But a hurricane resulting in their ship sinking leaves her believing she is bereft of a husband, and him floating on a piece of debris far from any change of rescue. Then something happens that is pretty unbelievable, but here is where the reader really perks up, because the novel is based on a true story.
I'm a huge fan of stories inspired or based on true events, so I thoroughly enjoyed this historical adventure by Dan Walsh. I've read several of this author's books, and I can confidently say this is my favorite so far.
I loved the characters and appreciated the authentic dialogue and situation of the Black slave in the story. What a wonderful man!
Full of hope, courage, endurance, and faith, this story will sweep you away and carry you to a satisfying conclusion.
This historical novel is as satisfying as they come. The characters are so compelling, especially the slave Micah, who has his own story. The ship's tale, with its loss and loss of life, is based on the sinking of a paddle-wheeler. That history, along with actual newlyweds separated because of the sinking, is revealed in a powerful note from the author at the end. A wonderful story.
This is so far the best book I have read this year. To say it is a page turner is putting it mildly. I was hooked from the first page to the last. A tear jerker too. The story was incredibly written and I would highly recommend.
I loved reading about the adventures of Laura and John. This book is about a shipwreck and the struggles of surviving it. Some true story mixed with fiction. I recommend reading this wonderful story.
I enjoyed this. Some parts were a little preachy. The most interesting part is how many of the miracles actually happened in real life and the author was able to incorporate them into the story. It was a good summer read.
Dan Walsh in his new book, "The Deepest Waters" published by Revell gives us a romantic story of a love tested by disaster.
Dan Walsh takes us to 1857 and begins to relate to us the story of John and Laura Foster who have been newlyweds for three weeks. They have taken the SS Vandervere and the steamship encounters a hurricane. They survive the hurricane but the Vandervere is sinking. Just when it appears there is no hope for anyone the Cutlass appears to rescue them. However, there is a problem the small ship can only take 103 so only the women and children make the transfer. All the men will go down with the Vandervere and that will be the end of the newly weds life of happiness.
Dan Walsh gets better with each book he writes so that means that this is his best book yet. While the book is inspired by real events everything that occurs in the book springs from the mind and pen of its author and this book is an inspiring read. This is more than just a love story this book deals with the themes of racism by looking at the life of Micah, a slave aboard the Cutlass, whom Laura becomes friends with. As you read watch carefully as Dan Walsh reveals his magic and tells us of racial prejudice in the North that seems to be taken for granted. The history that is woven into this story is incredible, such details are provided and the writing style is so intimate that you feel as if you have been transported back in time and are there.
Dan Walsh has provided us a book that both the men and women are going to enjoy. Everyone should read this book, if not for the history and the themes, then just to see what actually happens between John and Laura. This book is a page turning classic. I recommend it highly! I am looking forward to Mr. Walsh's next book.

When I first saw it has something to do with a ship in 1857, somehow Robinson Crusoe came to mind, albeit that story was set in the mid 1600’s, and I thought, well…..I dunno. But, since I’d already read The Discovery by Dan Walsh and loved it, I decided there’s a good chance I’ll like it. Like it? Oh, my word, it is awesome.
The Deepest Waters, inspired by true historical events in the mid 1800’s, is riveting and difficult from which to disengage. The plot is suspenseful and intense. The message is compelling and spiritual. Dan Walsh does an exemplary job of word-painting to the point of feeling you’re actually there in the center of it all. Rather than provide an outline or highlights of the plot, I’ve chosen to focus on some of the characters and let you discover the story for yourself, which incidentally has some great twists toward the end.
Laura, the newlywed who’s lost her husband at sea after an horrific hurricane, is more concerned about others than she is herself. She has spunk and compassion, faith and determination.
Captain Meade, Christian commander of the Cutlass, demonstrates dignity, fairness, and compassion to everyone, passengers, crew, and even his slave.
Melissa is ecstatic about meeting Tom, her betrothed, in New York. But her empathy toward Laura and the pain Melissa knows must be feeling from her loss prompts her to assure her new friend has food and lodging when they arrive in the city about which Laura knows nothing, not even whether her in-laws will accept her.
Joel, is transformed from a cold, money-focused business man to a loving and compassionate brother.
John’s, deep love for his new bride and his faith in God carried him through the most terrifying ordeal of his life. His selflessness allowed him to put himself in more danger in an effort to help others.
The elder Mrs. Foster, who although very rich and attuned to proper society protocols, used her position and energies to help people less fortunate, including former slaves.
My favorite character in this book is Micah, the slave of the ship captain, whose unwavering faith in God carries him through the most trying circumstances and events. Even after an undeserved beating, not the first of which he’s endured, he rebounds singing praises to the Lord. Then of course there’s Crabby, the lovable canine companion of Micah.
Sure there aren’t more than five stars? This book definitely deserves a ten. It is a definite MUST READ for all historical fiction enthusiasts.
The Deepest Waters was a powerful, poignant story of two people—newlyweds on their honeymoon—who experience a life and death situation. Their ship is sinking. How awful is that to experience mere days after you have just been married? Be prepared for an interesting adventure with these two wonderful characters. Dan doesn’t ease us into the story—he dumps us into the scene shortly after Laura and all the women on the ship have been rescued by another ship passing by. As Laura morns the separation, the tension builds as we switch to the husband, John, who is with the other men trying to last on the ship till the last second. How awful it must be to know that the ship is about to sink and you are many, many miles away from shore.
John and Laura were both strong characters that really made the story. Laura’s actions on the ship and John’s bravery while floating in the middle of the ocean were commendable. What a valiant hero John was! He completely grabbed my attention as he, time and again, helped someone else before himself. The friendship between Laura and Micah was special and I enjoyed watching them connect on the Cutlass.
The small miracles that happened along the way proved God’s providence was with them the whole time. Since the book began in the middle of a storm right after John and Laura have been separated, they weren’t every together and I thought it would be hard to learn about the two of them together this way. But Dan weaves in several scenes of flashbacks, taking either John or Laura back to when they were courting in San Francisco. I enjoyed these scenes and really got to connect with the characters.
The writing was really engaging. Different than what I usually enjoy, I still was pulled into the story and was curious and anxious to see how it ended. Dan seemed to lean towards short chapters and frequently changing scenes, which I really liked. Since it was easy to find a stopping point, I found myself picking up the book more frequently and reading longer, as it was so easy to say “Just one more scene!”
Dan has crafted together a very powerful read that will draw the reader into the story easily. This is the first book I have read by Dan, but I will be sure to look for his name in the future. The Deepest Waters isn’t a thick book, and with the short chapters and scenes, it’s a very easy read.
THE DEEPEST WATERS by Dan Walsh is an exciting historical romance set in 1857 aboard the steamship SS Vandervere off the coast of the Atlantic. It has in intriguing plot: survival at sea,a sea rescue.lost loves, faith, love.and coming to terms with the possibility you may have lost your one true love. This story is told from both the hero and the heroine. As they both try to survive not only the harsh sea, both the loneliness, while separated by the rescue of the women and children of the SS Vandervere another ship. The are men left behind, hoping to be rescued by another ship or make it to shore. This is an intense story at moments. The characters will capture your heart. The hero,John,is determined to survive, faces the unknown with an open heart, faith in his God and has saved several of the men from drowning. He is a very unselfish person. The heroine,Laura, facing the unknown possible alone, carries on,helps the other women on board the new ship, befriends a slave and his dog.It is about miracles not only on sea but also on land. It is a spiritual and inspirational message that show that God is still in charge of our lives. This story is based on some actual facts such as the sinking of a paddle-wheel steamship off the coast of North Carolina, the rescue of the women and children by an old sailing ship, the rescue ship running out of food, the captain of a second giving the rescue enough food for them to get to New York, and last but not least the most amazing of all was a bird flying out of know where, hitting the head of the captain causing him to change course, finding and rescuing fifty-three men adrift at sea for days. This is a must read not only for any and all Christians but for any and all historical romance readers. It is fast paced and a page turner.I actually read it in a few hours. I have read all his books and each and everyone are great from the first page to the last page. This book was received for review from the publisher and details can be found at Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group and My Book Addiction and More.
I was thankful to receive a review copy of such a heart-wrenching story of faith, hope and unconditional love. Set in 1845 when men were gentlemen and women were ladies. It was a time when ocean liners were fun and luxurious to ride on. Newlyweds John and Laura Foster were embarking on their new life together aboard the SS Vandervere for the most romantic honeymoon voyage ever. All was wedded bliss until tragedy strikes the ocean liner! The SS Vandervere is damaged beyond repair! With only hours before the ship is swallowed up by the sea decisions have to be made.
Visions of the movie Titanic rushed through my mind as I read of this horrific scene. Unlike the Titanic the SS Vandervere had life boats, unfortunately not enough to save everyone on board. Quickly women and children are loaded onto the life boats and separated from the men they love.
My heart hurt for John, Laura and the other families separated from their loved ones. I was inspired by these characters faith, honesty and love for one another. This was a captivating epic love story! It’s an honest story that touches your heart and soul!
I enjoyed how Dan Walsh gave the reader the inside scoop of life on the SS Vandervere and how life was lived in 1857. I appreciate the picture of the ship in the forward to the book that named all the parts of the SS Vandervere. It was really helpful especially for someone like me who doesn't know anything about boats. It helped me imagine what was happening on the boat and where exactly on the ship events took place. This was a moving larger-than-life story. I was inspired as I read about these characters holding out for God’s best for them, whatever that may be. This novel would make a great movie. I enjoyed Dan Walsh’s other books the Unfinished Gift and the Homecoming, and The Deepest Waters was no exception. . I look forward to reading Dan’s next book which is a Christmas story.
A story that takes place in Sept. 1857. Newlyweds John and Laura Foster are enjoying their honeymoon on the steamship SS Vandervere never realizing what is about to take place. When a hurricane strikes the ship starts to sink!Laura is rescued along with the other women and children on the vessel but the men are left on the sinking ship. Laura fears that John may be gone forever, but her heart holds out hope that somehow he will survive, and they might find there way back together. I must admit, I usually try to steer clear of stories that take place on ships, but when I learned that this story was inspired by real events, my love of historical fiction based on true stories outweighed the fact that there was a sinking ship, and i am so glad that it did. The story that unfolds inside the book easily held my attention. John and Laura are just embarking on their new life together, and then to be separated when the ship goes down one is rescued and one is not, was so sad, but the miracles that take place really uplift the heart and spirit. John was a really portrayed a true christian character because of his selfless way in helping others. Because the author allows John and Laura to reflect on their courtship, it allowed the reader to understand their connection. There are plenty of secondary characters that add to the story as well, and the dog Crabby was quiet enjoyable. I enjoyed the note that the author included at the end of the story, which reveals which parts of the story actually happened. Dan Walsh is a new to me author, whose writing style really pulled me in.He weaves a tender story of hope, faith, love and miracles, with a few surprises thrown in, that had me anxious to find out the ending!
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Newlyweds, John and Laura Foster have set sail on their honeymoon on the SS Vandervere from San Francisco to New York in 1857. Somewhere near the Carolinas, they are overtaken by a hurricane and the ship begins to sink. Fortunately, the women and children are rescued by a smaller ship but the men are forced to stay behind. Some of the men find objects to use a life preservers or rafts but others drown and go down when the ship sinks to the deepest depths of the sea.
Laura travels with the other survivors on the smaller ship in deep despair as she believes her new husband to be drowned and her future uncertain as John's family in New York doesn't even know about her.
Meanwhile, John and hundreds of other men are floating in the sea for days on end with no water or food.
I don't want to give away too much so if you want to know how each of them fair, then you'll have to read the book for yourself. This is the second book I have read by Dan Walsh. The first being, The Reunion which I have also reviewed and loved. I thoroughly enjoyed the Deepest Waters and I must say that Mr. Walsh has a unique and wonderful style of writing all his own. I said this before but I believe he writes a story as if he is telling it to a friend which I most enjoy. I haven't encountered this style before from any authors I have read. There is a Christian flair to the story along with love, hope, faith, and courage above all.
Published in April 2011 by Revell Publishers, The Deepest Waters is an 2012 ACFW Carol Awards Finalist and was based on the true story of the steamship SS Central America.
This story has its Joy of Love mixed with heartache and sadness almost from the beginning. John and his new bride Laura choose to honeymoon aboard the SS Vanderver headed to New York where his family lives. Laura had married late in life fearing she would always be alone till she met John. Now a shipwreck has torn them apart..will they ever find one another again. Miracles abound in this story and you will want to read about them. It seemed like the journey had only began when there was a terrible storm and the steamship was damaged...everyone must find a way off or go down with the ship. a nearby ship was able to take the women and children and John and Laura became seperated. Laura's journey takes her far from John who has his own journey through the waters of the Atlantic after abandoning the ship with only things they can hang onto like old doors and table tops. The men look night and day for a ship to rescue them. The sun is relentless and no food and water takes its toll on the men... It is hard to read at times but John has tremendous courage and his memories of Laura keeps him going along with his great faith in the Lord. Laura meets an old black slave on the ship where she is taken and they seem to help one another as the days go forward with supplies getting low from taking on extra people that need food and clothing.
Dan has told the story well of these two and the others that survived a terrible storm and shipwreck...you will want to read his tale.
Dan writes about a deep, personal love story that turns into anguish amidst the tragedy of the SS Vandervere caught in the middle of a hurricane in the Atlantic. My mind immediately conjured up the horrific story of the Titanic.
In The Deepest Waters, Dan Walsh vividly writes about the grief-stricken emotions of the women being rescued by The Cutlass while the SS Vandervere is sinking with their husbands and remaining crew aboard. The voices of the men and women cry out to you as you read--haunting cries that are real and heartbreaking, touching you to the very core of your being, pulling on every heart-string. So realistic that you feel you are there with them. Eerie, when compared to the Titanic sinking.
Since we live in such modern times, with radar, weather forecasts and storm tracking, it’s hard to comprehend what goes on during desperate times such as these. Dan brings to light the loss of life and livelihood, food deprivation, lack of communication, and greed, while contrasting those who hang on to faith, hope, encouragement, self-sacrifice, and love—even the miraculous.
Dan Walsh wrote a great story inspired by the true story of the SS Central America, a paddle-wheel steamship that sank in the waters off North Carolina in September of 1857. An inspirational story of chivalry, Divine intervention, and faith. Don't miss it!
This book was provided by Donna Hausler, Publicity Assistant at Baker Publishing Group in exchange for my honest review.
For people who love a historical romance set around the sinking of a ship, this book is for them. I have always been a sucker for a Titanic type love story, so this book was right up my alley. The fact that it is loosely based on an actual situation just makes it ten times more intriguing for me I loved the writing style, the tone of the story, the setting. I loved all of it. The spiritual thread was well done, too. I loved Micah's character and Crabby the dog. Very nice secondary characters. I really empathized with both John and Laura. The memories John and Laura had for each other were emotionally moving. I wanted to see a happily ever after for them.
The cover refers to this story as a Nick Sparks type romance. That's what this novel reminds me of, too. Only there was more hope in this story and less tragedy for the main couple. There was also a strong faith piece to the book. I loved how heroic John was in helping others. He was a perfect example of true Christian character in a man. I even loved the part where the guys floating in the sea had to make some decisions. Do they share or not? Who do they help and how much do they leave to God? And the fact that they were so worn out that faith mattered to the two men who didn't care prior to the shipwreck was so like real life. This book is making my favorites list!

THE DEEPEST WATERS is the third book by award-winning author, Dan Walsh.
