Daniel R. Snyder is a writer and instructor of English from Saginaw, MI, where he lives with his wife Jennean and his cat Kizzie, near his stepdaughter Megan and his children, Cassi and Dylan, who still come to visit him on the occasional weekend. His better works have appeared in various literary journals, including Bellowing Ark, Controlled Burn, Whistling Shade, and Adirondack Review, while bad works keep his wood stove continuously burning through the cold, dark nights of Michigan’s winter. He an unapologetic fan of Star Trek and Ernest Hemingway, and has no problem using them both in the same sentence. When he’s not writing or teaching, he can be found making huge piles of sawdust in his workshop and playing with the barn cats.

I received this book from a prerelease drawing, and I read it during the infamous "Inland Hurricane" of Southern Illinois.

I only gave this book two stars because of my personal feelings towards it. I found it pretty well written, with a well-rounded cast of characters and a quick-moving pace. That said, I was disappointed because the book wasn't at all what I was expecting it to be. I was hoping for a dystopian fiction, yet Snyder's society is incredibly like ours...almost boringly so. The conflict of the story is based on a totalitarian view of religion yet, with the exception of a few isolated incidents (the Easter play and the stoning), the government didn't seem so bad. Many different religions were openly discussed by the characters--in fact, the society seemed more knowledgeable about world religions than most of the people I know!

My final complaint is with the character of Lila. Her dialogue is quite predictable and she's portrayed as a rather two-dimensional "man-hater".

All in all, the book wasn't bad. I'd liken it to Dan Brown--minus the art and history.

When I first started this book I thought it was sort of "1984" except with a religious spin. I still think that, but "Resurrection" is nowhere near as strong as "1984". I think the character voices sounded a little too similar. The ending felt like the author set it up so that there was potential for a sequel at some point. The result was sort of weak and noncommittal. My favorite part of the book is the author's bio - loved it!
