Trophy wife Darcy McDaniel has just discovered that, thanks to her embezzling husband, her posh, upper-class life is gone for good. Now she's trading her suburban palace for a trailer park and her weekly salon appointments for a job. Darcy needs a new man--fast--one who'll keep her in the manner she darn well deserves. Problem is, the hottest prospect around is the my-way-or-the-highway hunk who's making off with her beloved Mercedes! Ex-cop turned repo man John Stark is sure that hiring the furious blonde in his headlights is a colossal mistake. He knows Darcy's high-maintenance, designer-labels-only type--after all, he's used to taking their cars. But he never expected this hellion to have the smarts and the spunk to go from receptionist to repo agent in record time...or to drive him insane with desire. She's the last thing this tall, dark, and dangerous loner needs...and everything he never knew he wanted.
Jane Graves is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of twenty contemporary romance novels. She is a nine-time finalist for Romance Writers of America's Rita Award, the industry's highest honor, and is the recipient of two National Readers' Choice Awards, the Booksellers' Best Award, and the Golden Quill, among others.
Jane lives in the Dallas area with her husband and a beautiful but crafty cat who rules the household with one paw tied behind her back.
This is a "new to me" author, eventhough the book was written in 2007. I picked it up as I saw on some list that it was like SEP (yes, I am still not over my SEP obsession - I wish she had a few clones so that she could produce a book per month).
Darcy returns from holiday to find her husband has absconded and left her penniless! She has been used to the "good life" for a long time and, suddenly, she has to try and live in the "real" world.
She meets John Stark, a repo man! Working class, ex-cop, down to earth, sexy. But her polar opposite …
Oil and water. Fire and ice. Night and Day.
"I wanted to be Dorothy Hamill."
Both characters were a little bit older … 42 and 39 - still younger than me, but it is better than reading about twenty-somethings, I guess. Not that I have anything against twenty-somethings (both my kids are in that age category). but it is nice, now and again, to read about "older" couples in my romance books!!
Is Darcy going to be able to resist the temptation of Millionaire's Row and settle for life where you have to budget and look for the odd bargain … and even shop in WalMart ("God forbid" - her attitude, not mine (I have never been in a WalMart) - I should rectify that on my next visit to the USA).
"How am I going to teach you the value of a dollar?"
… and in case you are interested, there were some sexy times.
This took a while to get started, but once it did I had a hard time putting it down. I was intrigued to find a romance where the leads are 40+ and from such strongly different backgrounds. Darcy is a trophy wife who was perfectly content being one when her world fell apart. John is an ex-cop making do as a car repo specialist when an injury took his preferred career from him. The sparks fly when they meet and they keep up through the whole book. And Graves does a great job with sparks.
A lot of what made this effective is Graves' unflinching depiction of Darcy. She liked being taken care of and hated being thrown back to a near-subsistence level of poverty. She's fundamentally unskilled, having been out of the workforce for the past fourteen years—years that spanned a technical revolution in the office leaving her without the skills expected of even basic secretarial jobs. This could have been a whine-fest with a lot of loser/life jokes at her expense. Instead, she's portrayed sympathetically enough that I was engaged in her struggle even though so much of her pain was brought on by her careless lifestyle and coasting along for so long.
John was well-portrayed, too. He's a crankypants, sure, but you can see where he's coming from and at least he's willing to give her a shot. Even when he's being demanding and unreasonable, Graves gives him enough detail and heart to engage my sympathies as well as my exasperation. He's not caring or kind enough to be an immediate draw for me, but I ended up liking him for all his gruff exterior if mainly for Darcy's sake.
So I ended up with 4½ stars, with most of the downgrade going towards the weird PoV sections from the creepy Jeremy (the billionaire next door who made periodic, but studied, plays for Darcy throughout). I find it likely he'll feature later in the series and he'll turn out to have a heart of gold but in this book I found him uncomfortably cynical and more than a little off-putting. Still, he's infrequent enough (and I got over the slow start quickly enough) that I'll end up rounding this to five stars.
A note about Steamy: There are a couple mild, but still explicit, sex scenes. Graves does a fantastic job with these because sex is a big part of Darcy's inherent trade-off as a trophy wife. So she has hang-ups that explode in John's face. Indeed, a good deal of my engagement with him came from his insightful and deft handling of these explosions and guiding Darcy through them intact.
It's a fun read and all, but I can't support the heroine's choices and I couldn't agree with her opinions throughout the book. I don't think she grew as a character, no matter that in the end she opted to forgo a glass and drink beer out of a bottle.
It's a mark of a good writer when she can make you like a heroine who logic tells you you shouldn't like.
Darcy's been a trophy wife for years. When her husband absconds with everything (and I mean EVERYTHING), I couldn't help feeling for this little gold digger. The resourcefulness she shows when John shows up the first time to repossess her Mercedes coupe just makes her that more endearing. When she figures out she has no marketable skills in a world that's become high-tech and so she has no way to snag another rich husband, she manages to get John to give her a job in the office, but he won't teach her how to repo cars. By the end, she learns (as you know she will) that the life of a trophy wife isn't what she wants.
This is my second Jane Graves novel, but it won't be the last.
Imagine you're a trophy wife and one day, you come home after a vacation and discover your husband sold your house to an other family, canceled all your credit cards, doesn't answer his phone and can't be found anywhere, what do you do ? Go back to your parents's trailer park, even if you doesn't get along well with your mom ? Get a job, even if you hate to get up early ? Hesitate between finding an other rich man or learn how to manage on your own, as long as you still have your dog and your Mercedes ? For Darcy McDaniel, almost forty and not proud to be, it's all these answers. Fortunately, she can count on her new boss, John Stark, a repo man who was a former cop, to help her discover her true personality and full potential. It's not gonna be easy, nor immediate, and it could be tempting to take the uncomplicated road again, but isn't it more fun to bicker and banter with the infuriating man she work for ;p
I read this book a couple years ago and I was afraid it wouldn't live up to my memories. It wasn't the case, but I can't say I found it as good as the first time. Probably because my tastes changed and I'm more picky than before about characters and how they act. Nothing's wrong with them, but bossy men and high-maintenance women are not my favorites. Darcy will change of course, but I would have prefer to see it happening sooner. At the same time, it's more accurate that way. I mean, you can't expect someone to modify his way of thinking in two days. So yeah, I was a little conflicted about this part, but I still had fun seeing the MC's antagonistic relationship turned into not quite a friendship, but a new chemistry where challenges and attentiveness prevail.
Darcy, hmmm, she was such a trophy wife. But then again she did learn a few things early on, and I did start to like her even with her flaws. I also liked that the author made her 40! I know, so freaking old ;) But comparing to other heroines it felt refreshing.
John was nice, the only issues he had was with a certain headstrong trophy wife. But who wouldn't.
They meet, there is anger, she gets a job, there is drama. And oh those sparks fly.
There is also...something else, I never really got that, but sure why not. A good chase.
I actually read it in a day, it was just so light and fun
It had some funny moments, but I never really grew to care too much for any of the characters. I'm just glad I read Jeremy's story before I read about him here. I didn't care for him much here. All in all, a fairly entertaining, but also kind of depressing read.
Darcy annoyed me so much I could barely finish this book!! She grew up in a trailer for goodness sakes but you would think she has always lived in a mansion. It just didn't make sense. Her father's sudden attention at the end was great, however, it seemed somewhat rushed and not fully developed. In fact, all of the characters, including Darcy, seemed to need a little more character developement. I just never got the feeling I knew enough about them. And the whole thing with the husband leaving (there always felt like there would be some communication from him), and his employers sudden interest in Darcy (which appeared to be related to finding the husband---but turned out not to be), was lifeless. The ending was anti-climatic (would have been more fun if the employer had instigated the whole situation causing Darcy to have to come live with him). I would loan this book, but only if you needed some fluff to read--TTFN-Elise
I got this paperback at a conference a while back and I just got around to reading it. What the heck was I waiting for?? I LOVED it. And now I feel a Jane Graves reading binge coming on....
Darcy married for money and is used to a luxury life, but when her husband disappears after cleaning out all bank accounts and selling the house, her only choice is moving back to her parents trailer house. She struggles with having to work and make ends meet with her meager earnings. When she crosses path with a handsome billionaire who may offer her everything she is missing, and a rugged macho man who annoys her, she is torn between her need for financial independence and self-respect. Women who marry for money? Eeew! Yet the author manages this subject with panache and the story moves along with funny dialogs, little angst, lot's of romance, and definitely no boredom. I took a star off because, after all, this lady DID marry for money (eeew!) and Mr. Macho was acting kind of macho-stupid-patronizing close to the end, I'd personally would have kicked him in the ass, excuse my language ;) I am definitely reading the next book and would highly recommend this book for fans of Jennifer Crusie, Sophie Kinsella, Tawna Fenske, and the likes.
. Lady Kira - per RFS
First paragraphs: On July twenty-fifth, Darcy McDaniel lost her house, her husband, and her self-respect. Then things really went downhill.
I'm very glad I picked up this book - one of the best contemporary romances I've read in a long while. Normally I don't do "chick lit", but this one was amazingly well done. Certainly it's because Darcy, our down-on-her-luck heroine, is so well written that I truly liked her as a character. As a former trophy wife who's forced to move into her parents' trailer, gets her car repo-ed, and has to shop at WalMart, you'd think you'd get a whiny, sniveling self-entitled brat. And she is, enough for her fall from princess-royalty, but the true nature of Darcy shines through.
Darcy's counter is John, her repo-man boss, who takes her to WalMart and forces her to try on Pepto-Bismol pink capris. He's overbearing, obnoxious, surly. But also endearingly romantic and honest. Both characters work really well together.
Another plus to this romance is the honesty between the characters - many romances these days use the common convention of misunderstandings/dishonesty as a plot element. Refreshingly lacking here. Great use of humor as well, and some wonderfully romantic scenes. Nicely done.
Romantic fluff, but surprisingly good. What happens when an about-to-turn-40 rich wife returns from a week in Mexico (which her husband sent her on, as a "surprise") and finds strangers living in her house and her husband nowhere to be found? What happens when EVERYTHING you had is GONE, and you are living with your very strange parents in their trailer? And what happens when a very handsome guy is trying to repossess your Mercedes, the last thing you have left? Oh, and what if you suddenly have to shop at Wal-Mart and color your own hair? What if your absent criminal husband's super-rich boss thinks you should be "his," for a price? And what if you start to find out that maybe you want to stand on your own two feet after all? Definitely worth the day you'd spend reading this one. Light, funny, sweet, interesting, though if you read much romantic fluff, you see a lot of what's coming.
The spark between John and Darcy is right there from the beginning. This story is charming, full of wit and enjoyable situation that guarantees to at least make you smile broadly (if not chuckling in delight). It is such a fun read - and I haven't been this entertained with romance genre for quite awhile.
One thing I love is that in this story, the hero-heroine in their 40's - which is like "a breathe of fresh air" for me, in category in which usually the heroine is like under 25 and the hero is in his 30's. Though I'm only 28 myself, I'd live to read more mature relationship sometimes
This rubbed me the wrong way!Jeremy was creepy! The heroine Darcy no. She was a gold-digger willing to do anything for money and even though she kind of grew I didn't like her or her mother. I guess this would be the chick-lit genre where all of this is okay but not for me.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book although it's not the type I usually read. Pure fun and fluff, full of humor and sarcasm. Darcy's life took quite an unexpected turn for the worst quite quickly and what follows makes for an funny, enchanting story. Yes, it was predictable but still a lot of fun!
John è un uomo molto brusco, burbero e perennemente convinto di aver ragione: John's way is the only way.
Günün her anı,eski hayatınızı özlersiniz. Asla kabul etmem dediğiniz bir işi kabul edersiniz Ve patronunuzun aslında zıt kutuplar misali işinize işlediğini görürsünüz.
Küçük Yalanlar Yüksek Topuklar'a İlkimden kitap önerisi isteyip de başladım.
Oldukça eğlendiğim, sevimli ve sağlam bir Çik-Lit. Kesinlikle size de öneririm!
Not: Seri olmayan kitap okudum. Kadir gecesi mi bugün? :D
Orjinal adı Hot Wheels and High Heels Goodreads Puanı 5/3,71 benim puanım 5/3
First of all, this would not be my typical book to read. I had a friend offer to send me two books from her stash. This is a modern romance all the way, and it is filled with unrealistic, enjoyable romance!
Secondly, I enjoyed this book even more than I thought I would. I will warn any reader of this book that there are some steamy sex scenes and they unfortunately occur between two unmarried people, but I suppose I did kind of overlook that portion of the book because it was so romantic! I loved the hero and heroine, and I also enjoyed the fact that it took place in Plano, Texas. I used to live near there, and I was familiar with the areas the author spoke about.
I truly enjoyed the fact that the two main characters were around 40 years old. I also enjoyed seeing the strength of the main character. Although this was a typical romance, the authoress is a gifted storyteller. There were a few minor twists and turns, and I read this very quickly. Once I was halfway through, I couldn't put it down.
There were a few "language" issues, but I will say it was minimal compared to some books I have read. I suppose the book held my interest because I wished that life were as simple as this. I didn't have to do a lot of thinking during the book--I was just able to enjoy it!
This was a hit and miss for me. We meet nearly-40-year-old trophy wife Darcy the day she came back from a fabulous trip and found that she lost everything: husband, money, house. What the woman to do? Find another rich husband of course! At least she still has her sporty Mercedes. But that too was short lived relief. Darcy's husband was late on the car payments and the car is being repossessed by an infuriating man, John Stark. Sparks fly when the two met and fireworks continued for most of the story. The characters interactions was laugh out loud funny. Darcy's parents, specially her mom, provided her share of entertainment. I wish John's character was more flashed out. Also, the storyline that involved a rich entrepreneur was the weakest point and I could of done without it. I know the author was presenting a devil temptation for our heroine but it didn't work for me. By the way, the rich entrepreneur and his bodyguard have their own story (Black Ties and Lullabies) which I liked very much.
Coming back from the special vacation her husband arranged for her, Darcy McDaniel is completely surprised when she finds out; a) her husband has dumped her b) he sold everything of hers except her dog c) she is broke d) he stole from his reporter e) all the above
Now Darcy's favorite car is bieng repossed by a smart alec neanderthol who has no feelings. When he sarcastically offers her a job, she takes it. John Stark knows it was a momentary lapse when he offered the crazy woman a job, figuring she will never show, well she does and what has him scratching his head is she is good at it. She is also good at turning him all different ways as he struggles to fight his attraction to her.
Fun read, I was not sure if I would like it because it seemed so different but it was a really humorous read. Always enjoy Jane Graves books.
i so want to love jane graves' books but they always lack something here and there...the book started very well with darcy losing everything and going bak to a life she never imagined for her...then comes john who is a repo man and lots of banter n sarcastic conversations follow which were hillarious....but suddenly they fall in love and suddenly everything is set right...how?? i felt so much more cud have been added...they dint evn become frnds before falling for each other...wierd!! anyhow the 3 stars r fr the plot and the witty dialogues...rather a 2.5! but for new chick lits romance readers...give it a try!
One of the funniest and most captivating books I've read in a long time. It was romantic, sweet and in some way very incentive. On the last page of her book J.Graves writes, "I require all my characters to have one quality: No matter how hard they're hit, they get back up again." And this is what I loved the most about Darcy: she didn't give up. I have read a couple of reviews where the readers expressed their negative attitude towards Darcy. I adored her!!! I liked the fact that she was different, and it was very interesting to watch her "grow". And, of course, John... He almost seemed to good to be true :)
Brava to Jane Graves! I will definitely be reading more by her.
Honestly, Jane Graves' heroines are so annoying. I don't find they have redeeming qualities at all. I hate them so much I can't give her books higher than a 3 star rating. Ugh. Another book I have to plow through...
0.01 stars out of 5. I'm impressed she was able to write over 200 pages. I wonder if this is what creative writing professors feel like when they read their student's work.
