His Good Thing: A Christian Romance

Rate this book
"Do not judge, or you too will be judged."

Loren had heard it plenty of times from her father in the pulpit, and around the house growing up.

But still, when she met Jameson, it was the first thing she did.

She judged him for who she thought he was.

When the church anniversary comes along, she needs a date. To avoid being set up with a 'nice, young man from the church,' — she decides she should take a chance on Jameson instead.

But would a fake date be considered a lie? And would she be judged for it?

I was attracted to this book first, by it's gorgeous cover and secondly by the synopsis. When I look for a good Christian romance, I look for stories that are relatable, stories that feel real and that I could possibly see myself in. This book delivered that for me.

Loren, a PK (preacher's kid) was raised with a very staunch belief and faith in God. Her relationship with him is strong. Even though Jameson's mother is a believer, Jameson struggles with the idea of a God who would let his mother struggle day to day and the death of his father. Loren and Jameson live in the same apartment buiding and a few doors down from each other. The two run into each other frequently. Jameson persistently asks Loren out on a date and she consistently turns him down. She pre-judges him on his looks and who she thinks he is. He didn't fit the image of what her parents would consider a good church boy. As her church's anniversary nears, Loren wants a date of her choosing and to avoid being set up by her parents. So she decides to ask Jameson to be her date.

As the pair get to know each other Loren wrestles with the temptation of being around an attractive man and dating someone unequally yoked. Jameson who has little faith begins to read his bible and talk to his mom and Loren about his faith.

I really enjoyed this quick read and this author did well with this as her debut novella. The book put more focus on Loren and the relationship with her family however, I would have like to see more interaction with Jameson and his side of the family as well as more insight into Jameson's walk and growth in faith.

The final book I had to read of Faith's and she has definitely become an auto-read author for me. I truly enjoyed the realness of the couple in this story. Loren and Jameson were opposites but still worked well. I loved their backstories and upbringing. I loved their individual views and how they came together.

Beautiful story on how a woman can be a good thing for a man. Wonderfully written.

📚THE STORY📚

Loren is happy enough to stay single - but the ladies at her church, including her mom and sisters, keep trying to play matchmaker. In an attempt to head off a thousand introductions to fine young godly men, she invites her gorgeous neighbor Jameson to be her date to her preacher father's 20th anniversary celebration.

There's just one wrinkle - Jameson is not a man of faith, and his past dating behavior indicates he won't be all that interested in someone who wears a purity pledge ring. Since they live in the same apartment building, Loren is quite familiar with the frequency and variety of women Jameson brings home, and she's not at all interested in being one of them.

They start to tentatively grow closer, but Jameson's lack of interest in the church and faith that are so important to Loren and her family present a major obstacle. Will Jameson follow Loren to church in more than one way, or will they depart to walk their separate ways?

💕THE ROMANCE💕

Loren and Jameson have flirty chemistry, and they're clearly very attracted to each other. Their disagreements about religion provide a platform for them to connect in conversation and also drive the central tension of the story. Jameson's story is not just one of falling for a church girl, but also falling for the Lord.

As someone who can be sensitive to the way conversion narratives are dealt with, I enjoyed the fact that Jameson's apathy toward faith was only ever depicted in his prior dating behavior and his conversations. He never behaves in a way that indicates selfishness or ignorance. Jameson is depicted as a gentleman who cares about Loren's feelings and is able to impress her family regardless of his current attitudes about faith.

✝️FAITH ELEMENTS✝️

This romance is about as overtly Christian as they come! The heroine, Loren, is the daughter of a Black Baptist preacher. The culture and theology of that specific church is front and center.

Jameson's resistance to involvement in church is the primary "why can't they be together" issue for the romance, and his conversion to a churchgoing man is the romance's arc. I would have liked to see more inner change rather than just behavioral, but in a novella this short, that's understandable.

Loren's religious convictions about waiting for marriage play and her subsequent need to 'resist temptation' play a large role in the story. Her physical attraction to Jameson and their chemistry together is largely filtered through this lens of her fighting to 'take captive' her thoughts and desires, which can be a bit odd for a romance.

📝MY THOUGHTS📝

Everything about this book is just lush and delightful. I loved the clever, Scripture-referencing title. The cover art is absolutely gorgeous. Then you get into the way the characters and their families all bring their own personalities and culture to the story.

Everything from sisterly banter to what it's like for a church of that type to celebrate a long-tenured pastor are lovingly depicted, even in a book this short. I only wish it had been longer - I wanted more time with Loren and Jameson, more time at church, more time with Loren's family! As a free sample meant to entice readers deeper into Arceneaux's world, this absolutely succeeds.

I enjoyed this quick read. Loren is a preacher’s daughter with her faith deep rooted from her upbringing. Jameson is the opposite of her. His faith wanes due to his father’s death and his mom’s struggles. The two always cross paths at their apartment building. Jameson and Loren are intrigued by each other. Jameson even asks her out a few times only to be shot down. Loren thinks they come from two different worlds but they really don’t grief and depressing had changed Jameson’s beliefs. Loren was a listening ear for Jameson’s troubles and the two form a great relationship. Loren’s interactions with her sisters is hilarious while they all navigate relationships differently. Wish there was more interaction with Jameson family outside of his mom. Wanted to see the brothers relationship just like I saw the sisters. Overall I give it 4.5 ⭐️ rounded up to a 5 only because I wanted more especially after they started dated.

I am quite disappointed with this book.

If I had a daughter, I wouldn't encourage her to read this book because I find that the underlying message is “Date a non-Christian and he'll be converted” whereas the Bible clearly says in 1 Corinthians 7:16 "For what knowest thou, O wife, whether thou wilt save thy husband? Or what knowest thou, husband, whether thou wilt save thy wife?" . Dating and kissing a non-Christian is already being unequally yoked.

Besides, the book focuses very much on physical attraction - we don't really know what they find in each other, apart from the fact that they want to jump each other. I wouldn't call it a “clean romance”.

But I found the novel to be well written!

Very cute cover. I thought the story lacked depth into the characters especially surrounding their first date. Loren began liking him a lot deeper after the date but for the life of me I couldn’t figure out why. I didn’t feel like neither shared anything significant on the date. It was a surface level date. As I continued reading I don’t think it picked up much in the “depth” area. Mentioned his father dying as a reason why he resented God but didn’t describe a closeness between the two.

All in all, ok story.

Beautiful

This was a great read! And debut story by this author, This story proves you never judge a book by its cover nor know where your blessing will come from. While Loren was a PK it was good to read about how she kept her faith and promise not succumbing to the stereotype. I loved how she ministered to Jamison by action and her witness. The way their relationship developed was incredibly romantic.

A fun short read that will bring moments of laughter and delight. The description provided for Jameson was so detailed and made it easy to visually see him and all of his bad boy glory. Can always appreciate a girl that knows her worth and doesn’t feel a need to compromise to retain a guy. Loren is the keeping kind, and even the bad-boy recognized her value and maybe it was him that needed to compromise and get in tune with God.

Inspirational✍🏾

The short story was passionate in teaching how God uses the Gospel to stir up the gift of Jesus Christ, that was in "Jameson". It is inferred that "Loren" was an instrument Romans 10:14 & 10:17. Jameson's mother believed and father was a minister. The author writes with passion and clarity, I enjoy her storytelling!

I really enjoyed this quick, heartfelt read. Loren and Jameson come from different backgrounds when it comes to faith and life experience, but their connection feels genuine. I loved Loren’s bond with her sisters — their banter added so much charm. I just wish we’d seen a bit more of Jameson’s family dynamic too. Overall enjoyed and would've loved to read more.

His Good Thing

I enjoyed this book showing that prayer is essential when entering into relationships. If God is in the mix even if a relationship seems impossible, if God is for it, He will make all the crooked paths straight.

This was a nice introduction to Faith Arceneaux’s work! While I understand it’s a novella, I feel that a short chapter before the epilogue could’ve helped to show more of the characters’ development as individuals and as a couple before the end.

i liked it, very nicely written but i found it a bit too short and the time skip was much. Would’ve loved to see Jameson journey more to God. Cute story tho!

I received an ARC through a BookFunnel promotion giveaway & am voluntarily leaving an honest review. This is the author's debut novel & I had never heard of them before. I was attracted by the synopsis & beautiful cover. I'm happy that the story was just as beautiful. If you like a quick opposites attract dual pov romance, which includes staying close to & finding God respectively as well, then this story is for you.

Loren & Jameson are neighbors. Although she finds him attractive & he asks her out every time that they run into each other in the halls or elevator, she believes that they are too different & he's exactly the kind of guy her parents would disapprove of her dating. However, to avoid being introduced to guys by her parents, she asks Jameson to attend her church's anniversary event as her date. He agrees but with the condition that they go on an actual date first. Both Loren & James have to ask themselves if their differences are too great to allow them to be together.

As a preacher's daughter, Loren's faith & trust in God is strong. Most of the men that she has dated either couldn't handle that or she felt nothing with them. Because of that, she's content with being single. On the other hand, losing his father & thinking his mother's prayers didn't work made Jameson stray from God. He lives a free life, involving spending time with different women not at the same time though. However, even after learning the differences between his lifestyle & Loren's, he can't help but still want to be close to her & learn more about her.

I admired Loren for her principles & how she dealt with her struggles regarding her feelings about Jameson. She acknowledged that she did judge him based on his appearance, even if his own words did confirm a bit about what she thought. But, even though she judged him, she didn't look down upon him nor try to force her beliefs on him. Likewise, even though Jameson questioned her beliefs, he didn't mock her. I like how once they were getting to know each other more he made an effort & respected her.

I would've loved to see more of them as an actual couple, or maybe even get another epilogue It also would've been nice to see more of Jameson's journey in growing close to God. &, as another reviewer shared, I liked seeing Loren's relationship with her sisters & wouldn't mind them having their own books too but would've liked to see Jamesons' with his brothers too , though maybe they will also get books. However, the things I mentioned didn't stop me from loving the story & even tearing up at some point. It was a great debut & definitely made me want to read more from this author.
