This interdisciplinary study explores how book culture functioned in the life and milieu of one of the nineteenth century's most complex figures. Spanning the statesman's long life, it presents key case studies illuminating the constant and fundamental interplay between reading, life and politics which characterised Gladstone's world.
Five stars for Chapter 2, "Rhythms of Reading". I approached this book without knowing much of anything about Gladstone. I was curious to learn about his reading habits after hearing him described as one of history's most voracious bookworms.
He did not "speed read". He had a good system of annotation (detailed in this book), read whenever he could fit it in to his schedule (any spare few minutes were spent nose in book), and read several books at once with at least one novel in the mix, and would switch between them as his energy and interest varied.
