This book is the first in BV's YA Seeker series. It revolves around Hayley, a teenage girl living an ordinary life, that is until the new guy in school walks into class. Seth is not like other boys, to say the least. Drawn to him, Hayley seeks him out and finds that there is much more to him than meets the eye. He is shrouded by mystery and what she uncovers changes her life forever. Suddenly her loyal friends turn into enemies, her school counselor has it in for her, her new boyfriend is much more than a mere boy, and and the world around her is not the only thing changing. She soon realizes that she is not some ordinary teenager after all, and her biggest fear is no longer what she is going to wear to school, it's if she is going to survive the night.

This is not your typical series. Sure it's a normal pnr romance where a teenage girl falls for a supernatural guy, but what it has that other series are lacking is mystery, suspense and action. Larson did a great job portraying Hayley, a teenager with ordinary problems and insecurities. She is young and naive at times, and yet is strong willed and determined. It made this PNR believable. I felt like that Hayley's character could have been me in my teenage years - sigh. Seth is another great character. The ageless boy who is not your average romance hero. He is dedicated, and well-versed, but seems to forget what romancing a girl is all about. The many dimensions of Seth make you want to read on to find out what he's going to do (or not do) next. The other characters are equally interesting. Brooke is the bff that is secretly (or not so secretly) jealous of you, Trevor is the guy who likes you (but you have zero interest in), and the school counselor is an evil turd, but in this case you can't get away from him so easily.

This book is definitely worth a read. There are not many YA novels out there that is not all about fluff and actually give you some action and mystery that us adults can appreciate.

I have mixed feelings about this book. There were good parts and bad parts. Most of the bad parts were just overused cliches. Haley complains a lot about her height. She becomes obsessed with a guy (Seth) she's known only for a week (who of course, just happens to be the best looking thing to ever walk the face of the earth). Bad guy is out to get her and him. Seth claims not to know who the bad guy is, but it is painfully obvious. She lies a lot to her dad even though she claims she never does that sort of thing. Her and her best friend get in a ridiculous fight over Seth. And I can understand keeping what Seth is a secret for a while, to build up anticipation, but he still gave Haley clues and they were pretty clear.

The good parts though kept me hanging on just enough to finish it and I will probably read the next just to see where it goes. If you want an easy read I would suggest this one.

Most of this book annoyed me. They only knew each other for a few days but they would say things like "I have never seen him act like that before" and I kept thinking which day Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. It definitely was a mystery. It takes a long time for us to find out what they really are and even though a lot of things are explained there is a lot that is not. So that leads me to believe that there will be a sequel. All and all it was good but not fantastic.

DNF'ed at page 154 of 248. I really wanted to complete Blood of Gold just cause but I simply cannot do it. I don't care for the writing style, the story line, the characters... Moving on!

I was reading Blood of Gold as part of my mission to complete all my Nook books so I can bring my Nook days to a close. I don't know where, when or how this book made it on my e-shelf.

Until Seth walks into her art class, Haley is a perfectly normal teenage girl. Suddenly, with the gorgeous new boy who she feels strangely drawn to, everything goes upside down. Friends become enemies, trustworthy adults turn evil and on top of it all, she knows Seth is more than human. And all of this happens in the space of a week!
I have to admit: I was kind of split down the middle as I began to read this book: there were good parts and there were bad parts. The bad parts were mainly just clichés: Haley’s complete obsession with the gorgeous new boy Seth, and the way she did the craziest things when it came to him after only knowing him for like a week. Also, there was the way she called her father “Daddy” more often than she called him “Dad” – don’t ask why that bothered me so much, for some reason it just did – and there were next to no contractions in the book, which kind of broke the narrative up.
On the other hand, though, I really liked the plot and I just had to finish the book and know what happened. The storyline drew me in, keeping me completely addicted despite all the contradictory things Haley did and said. Slowly you find out more about the characters, and I must admit, I found myself completely absorbed and wanting to know more about all of them. Larson managed to get the pace right while sliding in enough clues to keep the reader going, but not to give everything away too soon.
I liked Haley: she’s smart, shy, worries a fair amount, and short (something she talks about a little too much), with low self-esteem, possibly due to the mysterious death of her mother. As more of the story unfolds, you learn more about Haley and her past, including things that were guessable to things that completely surprised me. I really loved the way Haley described her first day back at high school after the summer holidays: B. V. Larson completely got the way teenagers size one another up right. Larson kind of emphasized some things, though, and that’s where a few of the clichés kicked in. But, overall, Haley was likeable and very real, if a little insane at times, and kind of too obsessed with Seth. But who doesn’t like a bit of crazy?
As for Seth, it was pretty obvious to me from the very beginning that he was different: and I mean in more ways than the way he spoke and his good looks. He’s mysterious, secretive, and very old-fashioned, almost chivalrous, but loveable at the same time. I found the relationship between him and Haley sweet and genuine, too. I made a few guesses about what he was, and got it in the end, although I was wrong to begin with.
Overall: quite an addictive book that I honestly couldn’t put down, in spite of the niggling annoyances. All the little things just weren’t enough to make me move onto another book: I really wanted to know what happened. I loved the plot, the ending surprised me and it was a quick, easy, fun read. I recommend it, and I think I may have to buy the next one just to see what happens.

I just finished this book that was offered to me by Larson a few weeks ago for review and thank God for the offer because I really enjoyed reading the book. The novel tells us a story of Haley and Brooke's life through high school and how it changed with Seth who was the new kid in school. The story starts in a slow pace defining each character and how they are connected to each other. The book also gave a brief history for the characters which is great especially for the first book in a series.

What I enjoyed best about the book is how Larson built Seth's character. I was hooked ultimately by Seth and what he was. I had a lot of guesses but was surprise when I found out what Seth was. The next best thing was the fighting scene in the novel between Seth and the bad guy. The main thing that I love next to characters is a good climax and this book gave me that and more! The ending was enough to make you want to read the next novel of the series. Will the next book unravel what really happened to the bad guys? Will the next novel explain how Haley's mom really died and how Haley gained her talent? Does the next book continue the story of Haley and Seth's life together or will it end?

A few things that I didn't enjoy but don't hate is Haley. She was very hard to love for different reasons. Haley was lacking self-confidence, strength for being a vital role in the story and her lack of grace. It was also irritating to read her being obsess with Seth's character. It is given that Larson may have wanted to make Haley's character more realistic but a little holding back would have been enough to make the character loved. A little less psychotic maybe? Kidding aside, regardless of this small issue it was not enough reason for me to put the book down. I enjoyed every page of the book, the transition/pace and the fact that it was very well written. Almost any one can read the book and enjoy it and I can recommend it to anyone.B.V. LarsonBlood of Gold

One of the first things about this book that got to me was the main character, Haley. She was so slow to figure everything out! I mean I know it's supposed to take them some time to figure it out, and unlike the reader she wouldn't have instantly known that the guy she was suddenly interested in was anything but human, but still. All of the signs pointed to one thing and it was almost the end of the book before she had clued in. Slightly frustrating.

I know there are people like this but Brooke (Haley’s best friend) annoyed me. They were friends since elementary school and so easily turned. Unlike Haley's naiveté this annoyance was the kind of someone having gone through the same thing. I could really relate to this having had friends I've known forever suddenly turn on me for the most ridiculous reasons ever. Boys are a huge problem when it comes to this. Way too many friendships break up over them.

I can’t say a lot about it without giving away the story, but suffice it to say the character of Trevor really added something to the story for me.

One aspect of this book that really stood out to me and made me think was something that one of the other characters remarked on; that with injustice came great power, far more than when justice was served. At first I was with the main character and annoyed at this statement and the chaos that came with it. But than I started to really think about it; and the character who made the remark and actually made a decent point. People do tend to get more passionate and stirred up when an injustice has been committed versus when justice has been carried out the way it should. It’s really something to think about.

I'm giving Blood of Gold by B.V. Larson a two out of five stars review. I liked the book enough to read through it quickly but it wasn’t a stand-out for me anyway.

Blood of Gold is the first book of a Young Adult series that left me feeling a little cheated and a little disappointed. I had this book on my kindle for a while and decided to finally check it out.

Unfortunately, there was nothing original in this dark fantasy novel involving a mysterious teenager who shows up at school and seems to be more than..human. Sounds very familiar and very predictable.

In spite of the cliches and the predictability of the plot, I did continue to read, hoping for an unexpected twist or a compelling climax that would make me yearn for more. Unfortunately, it never happened.

Haley is the heroine of the story who has self-esteem issues and the best friend who seems to have it all--looks and a healthy dose of confidence. But when the new boy, Seth, shows up at school, the two best friends become estranged. And when Seth shows his favor for Haley, things turn a bit nasty.

Haley's sudden attraction to Seth just seemed way overboard and I never felt a connection to either character. Their relationship never really developed-it was more like an instantaneous thing that I would have loved to see grow over time.

When you finally get some answers as to what exactly Seth is and how Haley plays an important role in it, I felt a bit cheated. Haley's role wasn't really developed enough for my tastes. I was left with more questions than answers.

Overall, Blood of Gold lacked originality, depth, and its shaky plot with little answers left me disappointed.

Most of the time when I finish with a book I go one of three ways like most readers do. I either love the book, thought the book was OK - good, but not my favorite, or I know it just wasn't for me. While I liked this book I can't really make up my mind about it completely, not sure what I think. This is the first in a series and at this point I wouldn't mind reading the rest, but I don't know that I'm going to rush to get my copies.

Haley and Seth's story is an interesting concept but I'm just not sure I'm in the right mood to appreciate their plight fully. Maybe I needed more romance? Most paranormal/fantasy stories aren't overly realistic so I'm not thinking realism was the problem either. I will say that it felt somewhat unfinished, or in need of some more polish. There were grammatical mistakes and I was left confused at times. To be honest I'm just unsure what the reason was. I don't like to rate books poorly and since nothing really stuck out as wrong per se, I don't want to just nit pick the book until I figure out what I'm trying to put my finger on. Maybe the second book will be more of a fit for me, maybe not? I'm not ruling the series out, I'm just putting it further down on my reading list for now.

This book is pretty slow. I can't say that I hate it, but it's really not one I fell in love with. I found it hard to stay with in parts and pretty predictable.
