This book was the set up for the entire course. I enjoyed that the author felt that it was necessary for the reader to have an immense amount of background information, but with that being said, as time went on it felt like we were RUNNING through time. This book covered more than 300 years worth of history, but the first 5 or so chapters felt like they were dragging when it came to the historical timeline. After those chapters, it felt like the author wanted to get through the rest of the information as quickly as possible. I may or may not have scored this one lower because the author is a Margaret Thatcher apologist / supporter...
A general overview of British history from 1714 to publication, Wasson delivers a well-rounded survey with bites of true British wit when called for (a rebuke of one of the Earls Grey for having the same skill at politics that his brothers had for big game hunting is accompanied by news that his brothers were killed by a lion and a buffalo). Raises interesting questions on British Imperialism and on the devolution of self-government on Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
