His Best Shot

Rate this book
Celebrities, bright lights, fancy restaurants, shopping excursions - the life of a basketball wife living in L.A. was amazing. Or at least it seemed.

I wouldn't know because I was a single woman living in a small town. Oh, and I had a teacher's salary. But my best friend was married to Nate King, the Nate King of the L.A. Stars. And I had the privilege of visiting her.

As much as I begged her to hook me up with one of Nate's teammates, nothing ever worked out.

Until the night I met Julius Roy. One thing led to another, and I ended up in his hotel room. When it was time for me to return to the classroom in my small town, I forgot about him.

But he didn't exactly forget about me.

His Best Shot is a fling romance.

3⭐️!

Julius and Imani was a good story but I feel like a lot and nothing was going on. For Julius, I was beyond livid with how his family was treating him and especially when the secret was revealed. I felt like that situation was extremely serious and didn’t end realistic tbh. Idk how that didn’t get out. I enjoyed the sweet moments between Imani and Julius their banter was everything! I’m going to laugh if anyone says “touchdown” lmao. I also loved how they met! Very “In this Club” vibes! Imani lowkey pissed me off because although I believe women having their own lives is a thing her story was not believable. She didn’t have that much going on in Tuckersville to be that indecisive about her relationship not being long-distance. She should’ve just said she didn’t like Houston better than Tuckersville. Idk her reasonings didn’t make sense to me at all 😩. Especially their blow-up in LA I felt like she played a part in the reason why they were in that place of their relationship. She needed to take accountability like he was doing. Overall I enjoyed the love story (but could do without the family drama or Imani’s indecisiveness), and the epilogue was sweet!

A full court press

Imani's story intrigued me from the start. I thought she was nothing but a gold digger friend of Aria and Nate. I was so happy to be wrong about Aria's bestie. Imani was a school teacher from small town Tuckersville. Meeting Julius a player from Houston, the same night Nate's team lost to the enemy added the slight drama to the story. Now, I will admit, the build-up was high, so when the middle portion of the story lagged a bit, I was flummoxed a bit, but it wasn't enough to stop reading. I am happy to report, the happy ending between Imani and Julius was expected and, I was delighted she snagged her rich man after all was said and done.

This book started off really well then slowly crashed. Imani was annoying. I understand her wanting to have her own life but it seemed like way too much self-sabotage. Julius seemed to be a more rounded character, the story line with his family was wrapped up too quickly.

This book also needs a good editor. There were few lines that were repeated.

good!

His Best Shot was good. What was supposed to be a one-time fling turned very quickly into something more. Julius and Imani were instantly attracted to each other but their story was work on both ends. Imani is a teacher and from a small town, while Julius is a superstar player in the NBA. I liked the flow to the story; it drew me in and I was so interested in seeing how things would play out. I feel that Imani wanted the glitz and glamour of being, “kept” but she learned quickly that wasn’t the lifestyle for her and I appreciated that so much. I also loved how the author showed Julius’ struggle in the league. The situationship was a huge adjustment to both characters. All in all, I enjoyed this story.

This was a great book. I love sport romances. Aria was a real one, at first I was getting irritated that she wouldn’t try to put her best friend on but Imani put herself on. I love how their relationship starts with him being intrigued by her and chasing her. I hate how their little disagreements about living arrangements could have been easily fixed cause they are actual adults but I’m happy that go their happy ending. Julius would have me screaming my man my man my man cause he just gave BDE from coming to the school to asking to Marry her. He was a real one and he always took accountability for his wrongdoings!

Girl, Bye

This has been on my TBR for a while. Unfortunately, it didn’t live up to my expectations. Imani wanted a baller, got a baller, then did all she could to push away the baller. She didn’t even like nor understand the game he played. SMH For most of the book, Imani was so angsty and whiny. Julius wasn’t much better losing his basketball mojo over a chick he barely knew. I wanted him to just move on and get over her. Overall, the story was boring. Their love story was underwhelming.

I'm almost finished this book and it's a struggle to get to the end. This book started off good but then it hit a lull. There problems were manufactured. Imani annoyed the shit outta me. I understand she has a career and don't want to give that up but damn, you can literally be a teacher in any city. Relationships are about compromise and scarfice. These two just drove me crazy with this fake problem. Also, how she flying out to see her best friend Aria, but not her man? Ugh.

More Than Just a Shot

His Best Shot is a sweet, feel-good basketball romance that blends ambition, vulnerability, and love in a natural, easygoing way. The chemistry builds steadily, grounded in emotional growth rather than instant sparks, which makes the romance feel earned.

The story balances sports life with personal struggles, showing how timing, trust, and self-belief play just as big a role off the court as on it. The characters are likable and relatable, and the romance unfolds with warmth, light tension, and heart.

This isn’t an overly spicy read—it’s more about connection, healing, and finding someone who believes in you when it matters most. Perfect if you’re in the mood for a comforting romance with a sports backdrop and genuine emotional payoff.

Boy Tries Hard to Get Girl

The plot of this book was good, but I was rushing to finish it and not in a good way. There were way too many interesting scenes/events skipped, the main female character was a bit annoying at times, the main male character is a famous b-ball player but his life as presented is unrealistic, and sometimes I would have to reread the first sentence of a paragraph to know that we had jumped an entire timeframe (I.e. to the next day) because it didn’t flow from the end of the previous paragraph.

Not sure I’ll be reading the rest of this series.

Such a cute story. Its like a slow burn but also well paced. I LOVED how they navigated being not both on the spotlight and having differing jobs, lives and wanting to not give up one and resent the other person until they had worked things out.

The public call out to his girl that he has a crush on was such a slick move but cute. How Julius moved through everything is so realistic and although Imani wanted the baller girlfriend lifestyle, I loved how real she got when faced with the situation. The end had be cheering them on

Shaky Premise

Within reading the first 12 pages, Imani seemed to be ridiculously thirsty and almost desperate and Nate confirmed the thirsty acting behavior, that was a turnoff to me. Then she finds what she was seeking via her hookup with Julius and does a complete about face that I found confusing and annoying. Ever heard of the phrase “keep the same energy.”

I also have never found it believable that a wealthy and successful (celebrity) man falls so quickly and deeply that he is chasing her around small town USA trying to convince someone to be with him 🙄

Imani was annoying with the back and forth and uncertainty and while Julius showed signs of an alpha male but his behavior at times was immature and lacked depth.

There were also vague descriptions of Imani’s look/features/complexion—why detail JR bring light skinned with braids while Imani’s hairstyle and banging body are only mentioned and how old are these people?!!!

Loose ends, the brother’s ordeal was wrapped up rather quickly and fizzled out after the climatic reveal and if Imani’s parents lived in Tuckerville, why wasn’t there at least a visit or meet-up or phone call.

This book had good writing but an okay and borderline faulty plot.

Fling to Forever

This was my first J. Nichole book and I'm just outdone. What rock have I been living under? I've been missing out! When I first started the book, I was a tad bit dismayed because I thought Imani was about that groupie life. Even though she had a one night stand with Julius, she wasn't trying to come up. She treated him like a regular man, and that intrigued him. Julius tracked Imani down and just courted her. They became friends, and that friendship progressed to a relationship. The issues developed when Julius' game began to struggle. It seemed coincidental that his productivity on the court began as soon as he got a woman. In his mind, having a long-distance relationship was causing his issues. He didn't say it, but it was inferred. He kept asking Imani to move with him, but she was reluctant. She was a woman with a career that she worked hard for. She didn't want to just be a baller's lady. This couple had to compromise and respect their choices. They also had to communicate. I seriously loved this book. I've found a new author. Ms. J. Nichole, there's no getting rid of me now.

3 1/2 stars ⭐️ was all I could give this and was not happy about it!!!

I am so unhappy about this rating because of Imani’s way and character. I enjoyed the storyline and Julius but my god, Imani tested my patience and I ended up skipping most of her POV.
Imani was just so selfish, self centered and just an entitled b###h, and I couldn’t wrap my head around her. It literally disgusted me to read about a female as such; what’s sad is that there are female like this for real in real life. I surely was hoping throughout the book to not have an HEA and have her lose everything from man, job, everything, and finally have a story where the main female character stayed alone….
In any case, hopefully the next book will be better

People love to say gossiping is a girl or woman trait but boys and men are as bad or worse. Julius teammates and brothers lips are hella loose,

I adored Julius from jump. Imani was a little questionable when she was desperate to find a baller and then she annoyed me a little when she was being difficult with Julius regarding the need to stay in Tuckerville. She admitted she was self sabotaging. But over all I loved her character. And I loved her and Julius together.

I was very disappointed in Jackson but picked up on what he was doing long before Julius found out. Hope he gets his ish together

Shoot your best shot

Ms. Nichole sure knows how to make you relate to her characters and feel something. In the beginning I was worried I wasn’t going to like Imani cause it was giving Thirst bucket to the 3rd power but once we got into her life and who she really is it was up from there. I loved watching the chase and I can appreciate a realistic “figuring us out” timeline especially given the seasons for their professions. I will say I wish we got to see the Meet the Mom scene since his family is such a big part of his life and since her role extends into his career. Overall though Julius won me over and Aria and Imani got exactly what they were looking for .

His best shot

I really enjoyed this story and highly recommend this book. What started out as a one night stand for Julius and Imani led to both of them thinking about the other and Julius making moves so he could stay in contact with Imani. This couple had a journey and had to work on their communication and for Imani not focusing on past relationships that didn’t last. Julius was all about Imani and he was determined to make any shot her took with her his best one. I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series.

BALLER GOT THE GIRL

Really cute story. Imani was a grade school teacher who lived in a small town called Tuckerville. Her best
friend Aria married a baller and move to LA. Imani met Nate in a club while she and her best friend were out on the town. Nate saw her and asked her to join him which she did. She slept with him that first night, something she had never done before. This was the beginning of a relationship that turned into Love. I think that the reader will enjoy reading this tale of true love.

What Happens When Your Ritual Changes?

J. Nicole, good read. I love how Imani was set into doing her own thing. She wanted to keep her heart intact. It was a great thing watching her go through her motions, she had a giving heart. Julius, wasn't your normal guy with status. I loved how he had more emotions and how his entire world changed. I loved the passion he showed. He really gave a different insight to show what a person believes will effect their outcome. In the end the lessons were learned. 🤗🤗🤗🤗

Loved it!!

This is my first read from this author and I’m impressed. I thought Imani was a gold digger looking for a sponsor. 🤦🏾‍♀️ I couldn’t have been more wrong but I will say she got on my nerves. She wanted a baller a different life and when the opportunity presented itself she was hesitant. I felt like Julius was all in and she was just stringing him alone. He wanted her in Houston she couldn’t do that and considering the trade I guess it’s good she didn’t make that move. I loved them together and I’m just glad that they got their HEA 🫶🏾

Torn

This story started off great! I was intrigued and couldn't wait for Julius to Shoot his Best Shot but it fizzled out in the middle. This poor man couldn't catch a break. I loved the idea of Imani being independent and not wanting Julius for his money but could she be anymore annoying? The poor took shot after shot after shot and she still was unsure. She wasn't this unsure after the one night stand! Then his family, like who profits off of your brother's misery. I was root in for Julius but maybe he should have sought someone else?

Purpose, Motive & Intention (s)

Hmmm, 🤔?…Hmmm🧐?…Hmmm🤨? “His Best Shot: A Basketball 🏀 Romance (The L.A. Stats Series - Book 1)” was a mediocre read. I expected more or at least different than the industry pro ballers stereotype “fan girl” - “groupie” type, but that’s precisely who she was initially (at least that was my perception 🤦🏾‍♀️🥴). Unfortunately, Imani came to LA with an agenda…$$$, (an instant upgrade) which reflected her character … keep reading to discover both Imani & Julius’ purpose, motive & intentions and you’ll discover their true character!

Okay then

Well, I will admit Imani is not one of my favs. I guess I love the sport and the sacrifices it takes for the players to have had to deal with her wishy-washy self. Jules was too new to relationships to move like I would have wanted him to.
Didn’t even know Imani had a family til the end though.
Well written. But I did have to pause because I was getting too involved in a BOOK…..but I returned to finish it.
Enjoy and Happy Reading

Really Good

Ok…so… I really enjoyed this book..like a lot!!! I loved Julius and how he pursued Imani. I liked that Imani was not an easy catch. However, I think Imani was a bit much. I found myself frustrated with how she wasn’t willing to match Julius’ energy in the pursuit of something real together. I’m glad she admitted to her self-sabotaging behavior in the end. Very engaging story.

Imani irked my nerves

Imani irked my nerves so bad that I almost stopped reading this story. I get her and Julius had their own separate lives and lived in different states but her not knowing what she wanted and giving him a hard time was the pits. The fact that she kept bringing up past relationships was unnecessary. I skipped a lot of the story. Just making sure I read the parts where they were talking. She didn’t have to give him such a hard time.

Almost sick of her

I almost got sick of her. She started off wanting all of this and then when she got it, she didn’t know how to act. HTF you got time off and visit your friend and not your man. I believe this is the first book I have read that I truly didn’t like the female character. She was draining. With all that being said, I do like this author. I will finish this series

My 1st J. Nichole read.

His Best Shot was a pretty good read for a 1st. I liked the plot line & characters. Imani's nonchalance regarding her relationship with Julius was a lil annoying the more i read. The only thing for me is I prefer a clear timeline, especially when time jumps are involved, so I was a little lost on when what was occurring until pretty much near the end. Despite that I enjoyed this story & I'm looking forward to the next.

HAPPY READING!

Loved the ending!

Not going to lie. The beginning was rough. A good editor would have helped. However, I'm glad I stuck it out. As frustrated as I was with Imani at times, her actions made sense. I wouldn't give up my whole set up and stability for someone who I haven't known long enough to confirm they wouldn't just drop me on a whim.

The end was predictable, but still very cute! So many cute moments in this one!

Imani is the most annoying FMC that I have ever encounter. I think Julius should have left her alone because she did not know what she wanted. She sounded like a gold- digger in the beginning and redeem herself by the middle but went to being a good digger because ultimately, she wanted to live the same neighborhood as her best friend. Julius is more development MMC but he has his faults too. He was trying to move too fast just because he had a great night of sex and she did not rob him.

Love and basketball my favorite. This story started off really hot and kinda cooled off towards the end. Imani started to try my patience with her uncertainty. She wanted a baller, but changed her mind once she had one. Despite all of that, this was an overall good read.
