Walter Brueggemann was an American Christian scholar and theologian who is widely considered an influential Old Testament scholar. His work often focused on the Hebrew prophetic tradition and the sociopolitical imagination of the Church. He argued that the Church must provide a counter-narrative to the dominant forces of consumerism, militarism, and nationalism.
Helpful commentary, particularly explaining the rhetorical intent of the prophecy. My favorite part was how the author kept referring to Psalms to show organic connection with Isaiah's prophecy. Another theme carried through well was the contrast in old and new, what has been to what will be. Seems pretty obvious, but that recognition helps the reader trace a dynamic tension through the book. I'm not convinced of late dates for Isaiah nor of multiple authors, but the textual commentary is useful and insightful.
Favorite commentary on Isaiah so far - he keeps in step with original context while also drawing connections to our modern world in a contemplative way. Easy to read and not too academic. I also appreciated his graciousness in handling alternative viewpoints with which he disagrees - not all commentators are so nice or humble about opposing viewpoints.
Very good commentary on "1st Isaiah" as Brueggemann titles the first half of the book of Isaiah. Would definitely recommend to anyone, whether you are a bible college student or someone wanting to go deeper into the book of Isaiah.
Walter always comes through for me. I read everything he writes. I love his insights. His scholarship is excellent. His appreciation for scripture is evident. But it is his pastoral bent that I always appreciate. He not only fills my head with good thoughts, he fills my heart with peace and a desire to do and be better.
