Kate Dena thought she was heading home one dreary evening. What she was really heading for was an adventure of a lifetime in a world of fantasy, magic, and romance. Flung into a world she doesn’t understand and with magical powers she never knew she had, Kate finds herself adrift in a sea of confusion and conjury. Her best anchor turns out to be an attractive stranger who takes her under his wings, literally, and shows her the beauty his world has to offer. Unfortunately, beneath that beauty there festers a terrible evil in the form of the King of Shadows, and he desires Kate above all else. Together the two must work together to escape from the clutches of the wicked king, even if that means eluding his agents across an entire kingdom. Along the way they learn more about each other, and as their journey takes them through bawdy taverns and under troll-infested bridges, Kate begins to realize that she’s falling for her handsome hero. Will she survive long enough to enjoy her newfound romance?

Was there any real character development? No. Did I have any idea what was going on plot wise? No. Will I be reading the rest of the series? Absolutely.
After reading the last book I had on my Kindle, I had to search out something completely different. Way to much talk of faith for my taste. So what's a girl to do? I've always been curious about shifter books but all of the covers are embarrassing. Even though I enjoyed this book a lot, I don't think I could stand having a bunch of naked male chests in my yearly book review.
Kate is in our world when a drop of her blood mixes with water and as she falls into it, she falls through a portal. The first being she encounters is a winged person. As their hands touch wings burst out of Kate's back. The winged person is so shocked that he lets go. By the time Kate crashes below the wings are gone, but now she is being chased.
She is brought into hiding by Brother Collins and there she meets Ros. They are trying to figure out how she got here, how to send her back, when Ros agrees to take her for a walk to look around. The second their hands touch Ros reacts and shoves her head in a mop bucket.
That is when it becomes obvious that she is the one from the prophecy. She has the ability to take on other people's gifts as long as they are touching by hand. Maybe also foot, I'm unclear about that part.
So Ros takes Kate on a adventure filled journey to get her away from the castle of The Black Dragon. King Corvinus wants to capture her. First they get Brother Collin's brother free from prison . Each step along the way prompts where they run to next. Each place isn't always the quickest way to safety but each stop is so much fun!
I love the characters ( all of them, especially Binuwhatever the witch. She was extra fun!), I loved the plot, but I just can't bring myself to put another chest on my list. We'll see, maybe I'll start thinking about the story and want to jump back in regardless of the embarrassing cover.
Every line, every chapter, is dopier than the last. Cartoon shenanigans include the FMC hiding in a suit of armor like Scooby Doo; grabbing a snake and bonking it on the head, causing its eyes to cross, thus signaling that it is defeated (presumably with little tweety birds circling the air above it); and the FMC getting a bowl of yucky gruel upturned onto her head because she tried to sneakily dump it. Every problem in the book is immediately and cleanly solved with no effort on her part. Full of contradictions and inconsistencies. Examples: In the first half of the book she swims underwater with the MMC, at first recreationally, and later beneath a castle to break in to the dungeons; in the latter half of the book she suddenly “can’t swim” and is afraid to cross bridges or get in boats lest she be forced to swim. Baffling oversight there. You’re meant to assume that the MMC’s magic gave her the ability to breathe underwater and also to swim, but that’s 1) stupid and 2) not stated from the outset and she never protests swimming in the first half, only later on. Elsewhere, the book makes a point to tell you that the MMC’s touch does NOT trigger her powers, that it’s her hands that have to touch him—but she later forgets this twice. Once during the Only One Bed moment when she warns him to keep his feet away from her lest he trigger her powers (shouldn’t work) and another time in a rowboat type scene where he touches her face in almost exactly the same way as in the initial “testing your power” scene but the narration makes a point of explaining that he’s just wrapped his hand in a bit of cloth so it’s fine (it should’ve been fine either way). The entire quest to get out of the kingdom and “learn more about the prophecy” makes no sense when you consider the fact that we started our journey in a monastery with a wise old monk who believes this crap and had a big holy book with all the deets and didn’t tell the FMC anything. She shoulda sat down for study time for one hour instead of wasting time with her crush getting captured and menaced by the baddies.
This was too short to be considered a book imo. It contained only the minor plot development and no real character growth. The cover is poor. You would need all the books of the series to feel like you read 1 book I think, that said I’ve only read the 1st one so far. I do enjoy the different dragon type choice and so far lack of full body transformation into said dragon. And the variety of potential power/abilities that the FL could have. The ML/FL early relationship development is a bit poor - but with the situation they don’t have many opportunities for casual flirting and/or depth of getting to know you.
Very compelling storyline that doesn't flesh out the characters very much and leaves a cliffhanger at the end. I should have liked to hear more about what the prophesy really is.
3.5 - was slow to start and then the last 3/4 of the book felt like they were paced for double time. The book ended without the story being complete - I could go either way with reading the next installment; would be interested to see where it goes, but not disappointed if I never find out.
Found this one a little hard work at the beginning....jumping slightly but once I got through the first couple of chapters it really took off. Interesting characters and world and a lot of potential. A little bit of a cliffhanger...but definitely a promising beginning!!
There’s nothing that’s drawing me in, characters seem to innately know each other, but “just met” and less than 200 pages away from the ending and I can’t continue.
