I recently made a mid-career switch to the fashion industry as a merchandiser, so this book came in pretty handy to get to know more about the sector. There's a quiz/test of sorts in here to first let you determine which role you're best suited to (i.e. creator, visualiser, critic, retailer), and the rest of the book is mainly interviews with successful people in various occupations within the industry (e.g. designer, stylist, photographer, editor, marketer, merchandiser, etc). The interviews were quite interesting and did provide a lot of insight into what it's like working for a big fashion house, how you could possibly move up the fashion corporate ladder, what kind of work you can expect to do, and life you can expect to lead. But I had to deduct 1 star from my rating of this book because so many of the links provided were now defunct - a lot of the companies/websites mentioned no longer exist or have gone out of business, one example (among the very many) being Barneys. I guess this in itself says a lot about the market! :-\
Surprised to find people on Goodreads and Facebook aren't more aware of this fantastic book -- not the type of book I would expect to find myself reading, but for work, thought I'd like to get better acquainted with the industry of fashion. Iverson is a supreme writer who's done something altruistic, actually -- informing those who want to get into the elite world of fashion exactly what the rules are to break in. One meets alot of interesting, current people in fashion, and finds guidance for the first job that would apply, really, to any industry. Plus there are links throughout, which makes this book appropriate for the Facebook/Twitter/crackberry generation, and a career survey I found both myself and my boyfriend enjoying.
5 stars: I really recommend this book for anyone with an interest in popular culture, the arts, media, or fashion. Duh.
Amazing book with great tips on the fashion industry, from editing to styling. I love how each field is covered and tips are given to cover each career path. A must!
This could be a good book for college/high school students who are uncertain about their career paths and need "guidance" when considering a career into the fashion industry. Otherwise, this book contains little useful/interesting information about the fashion industry as a "industry".
