Schoolmarms never fell in love with scoundrels.

Hannah Davis was only looking for a vacation from her run-of-the-mill schoolteacher existence when she visited lovely Coronado Island. She never imagined that she'd find way more than she was looking for - including, possibly, love.

What I Liked:
-It was a short, cute romance
-The characters were likable and relatable

What I Didn't Like:
-It was a bit predictable
-The supporting characters - Desi and Troy - were actually a bit more interesting than the main characters
-The cover art was misleading: The male MC was a long-haired blonde and the cover shows a dark-haired man with a short haircut. Did the author not catch that at all?
-The editing wasn't consistent. I caught Secret Service written as "Ser vice" many, many times. And also panties written as "pan ties". Almost like it was on purpose. I nitpick on things like that only because they destroy the flow of the book. It's like someone talking during a movie.

What I Wanted More Of:
-So... ummm... is it just me or does anyone else want to know if Hannah ever got her luggage back?
-I would love to know more about Desi and Troy's romance. Their characters seemed more interesting to me than the MCs we were supposed to care about!

3 stars because it wasn't bad for a free download (Amazon) and the author did capture my interest with at least some of the characters.

In Not Another New Year's, Christie Ridgway has created an enjoyable story, that is basically a two-for-one romance, with a likable cast of flawed characters. Tanner Hart and Hannah Davis, the primary hero and heroine of the story are basically two ordinary people who unfortunately had some unusual things happen to them. They are basically two peas in a pod with a great deal in common. Both have put high expectations on themselves due in part to family dynamics. After Hannah's sister died, she had somehow felt a responsibility to the family to more or less take her place and accomplish the things that she likely would have done if she had lived. Tanner felt that he just didn't quite measure up to his war hero brothers. Of course, both ended up feeling like they had let their families down. What I really liked about their relationship was that they helped each other to discover that the things they had believed about themselves simply weren't true. As individuals, I was pleased to see both Tanner and Hannah grow and change, so that they could move beyond the pain of the past and into a promising future.

I really enjoyed the secondary romance between Tanner's brother, Troy and Desiree. They simply stood out to me more than Tanner and Hannah, not because he was a war hero and she was a princess, but because I felt that they showed more vulnerability. They had to reach further outside their comfort zones in order to allow their relationship to happen, and realize their hearts desires. Also, theirs was not a love-at-first-sight romance like Tanner and Hannah's. While I am not fundamentally opposed to these types of romances, I usually have a harder time finding them to be believable. I think it is a staple in many romance plots that is overused and would lead one to believe that this phenomenon happens in real life far more often than it probably does. I just seem to have a preference for romances that either take time to develop the feelings between the protagonists or in which they have had some previous relationship. Troy and Desiree had know each other for nearly a year, and had obviously been attracted to each other for a long time, even though they had spent the better part of that time at each other's throats. Normally, I don't care for romances in which the characters bicker all the time, but there was something about Troy and Dezi's arguing that was rather endearing. I was just waiting for the fireworks to go off and when they did, I was not disappointed. While I liked these two characters a great deal and found them to be very strong, I did not necessarily think that their scenes overshadowed Tanner and Hannah's. I only found myself wishing to see more of them or that they had gotten their own book instead. The only part of their story that I thought fell short was that they didn't exactly get a solid ending, but I still loved reading about them anyway.

While I was able to appreciate the characters and the overall story, I thought that there were a few plot weaknesses. Once I realized that Hannah's Uncle Geoff actually lived in San Diego, I couldn't quite figure out why he hadn't taken care of her personally while she was on vacation in the area instead of setting her up with Tanner as her “tour guide”. Of course, without this part of the plot, there wouldn't have been a story, but I just think that the overall story would have been a bit stronger if this part had been shored up, perhaps by the author giving more reasons for Uncle Geoff's choice. Also, after reading two of Christie Ridgway's books, I'm beginning to think that she has a penchant for ambiguous endings. I have a preference for strong happily-ever-after endings, and though the ending of this story was happy, I felt that it left too many unanswered questions. One other aspect of the story that bothered me was that the first time Tanner and Hannah nearly had sex they were still strangers and had given each other fake names. I know that this can be an all-to-common occurrence in today's society, but I still prefer that the main characters in my romances be in love before they fall into bed. As the days began to pass, I could sense them beginning to fall in love with each other, yet it wasn't entirely convincing and as mentioned above, I'm not a huge fan of the love-at-first-sight scenario. Even setting aside my own preferences on this, when Tanner and Hannah did finally make love, they had only know each other for a few days and in spite of their growing feelings were still basically considering this to be a vacation fling. Even with this in mind, they did not entirely practice safe sex. While some loves scenes involved condoms, others involved risk-taking and without any mature conversation about said risks. In spite of this flaw though, I thought that the love scenes overall were at least tender, steamy and generally well-written. Finally, one other minor annoyance I found was Ms. Ridgway's use of parenthetical phrases as an exception or aside to a particular character's main line of thinking. While some of them were rather witty, I simply felt that they were a bit overused.

There were a couple of positive things that I didn't already mention that I also thought were noteworthy. I enjoyed the bit of danger and intrigue surrounding Dezi. It helped to make the story more full and interesting as well as drawing all four of the main characters into a mild action plot. I also liked Tanner and Troy's parents. Although they were only in one scene, they made an impression on me, and I would have liked to have seen more of them. While I have not seen an official series designation, Not Another New Year's is a sequel to Must Love Mistletoe. Tanner and Troy Hart and Desiree al-Maddah all made their first appearance in Must Love Mistletoe. Also, Finn and Bailey, the hero and heroine of Must Love Mistletoe, made a brief appearance (Bailey twice) in Not Another New Year's. I must say that I was pleased to see some of the ambiguity surrounding the end of their own story cleared up during their scenes in this book. In spite of the cross-over characters, both stories could be read independently without really getting any major spoilers. In addition, the backstory on the assassination attempt which was introduced in Must Love Mistletoe is recounted in Not Another New Year's only now more from Tanner's point of view rather than Finn's. Overall, I found Not Another New Year's to be a pleasant and generally lighthearted story that was an easy read. I would be open to reading other books by Ms. Ridgway in the future, when I am in the mood for this type of story.

Weak 3 stars. Ok for contemporary romance, but nothing special or different. Light on plot, character, and dialogue.

STORY BRIEF:

The main romance:
Hannah is a sweet second grade teacher. Her parents and relatives are protective, helpful, and drive her wherever she needs to go. She was engaged for several years to Duncan who dumped her a few months ago. Now she is on a ten day vacation in Coronado. Her Uncle Geoff works for the secret service. He asks one of his former agents Tanner to watch over her for safety. Tanner lives in Coronado. Geoff tells Hannah that Tanner is her tour guide and to go to him if she has any problems. Hannah is naïve, klutzy, and wants to please everyone. She is careless in the airport resulting in theft of her purse and her luggage. Dez offers to let Hannah stay with her. Then Dez loans Hannah sexy clothes and lingerie to wear – things Hannah would never have owned.

The secondary romance:
Desiree (Dez) is the daughter of a wealthy Middle Eastern prince and a famous American model. The father has no interest in Dez, and her mother neglects her, but they provide her with plenty of money. Eleven months ago, Dez met Tanner while he was providing security for her father. She grabbed Tanner and kissed him in front of the paparazzi. The picture was in the tabloids. Tanner lost his job because his face was too well known which hurt his ability to stay in the background. Geoff offers to give him back his job if he takes good care of Hannah. Dez is attracted to Tanner’s brother Troy. Troy is a former marine who owns a bar. Troy fights his attraction to Dez.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
Not much plot or character development. Nothing special about dialogue. Think of this as an ice cream sundae. It’s a light, fluffy read. Lots of time is spent describing the characters’ lusty feelings and desires for the other. This is going on with all four characters, Hannah, Tanner, Dez, and Troy. These ponderings almost have a feeling of interrupting the story, especially with Tanner. Almost all of his thoughts are about wanting sex with Hannah. I enjoyed the Dez/Troy story more than the Hannah/Tanner story.

Two subplots help to fill the book. 1. A bad guy is after Dez for reasons concerning her wealthy father. 2. Hannah wants to find and meet Caroline, the woman who stole her fiancé. Caroline lives in Coronado.

The sex scenes were ok, kind of average. But there was one that I notably liked, the last one with Tanner. Previous sex scenes had Tanner being gentle and taking a lot of time and effort to please Hannah. The last one has him approach her saying “Take off your clothes, Hannah. I need you right now. I have to have you.” His alpha comments and desire were an aphrodisiac to her.

DATA:
Story length: 353 pages. Swearing language: strong, including religious swear words. Sexual language: moderate. Number of sex scenes: 6. Estimated number of sex scene pages: 36. Setting: current day Coronado Island and San Diego, California. Copyright: 2007. Genre: contemporary romance.

Not Another New Year's by Christie Ridgway (suggested by a good friend who adores contemporary romances)

Even though I'm not a big fan of contemporary romances, this week it was fun to read New Year's-based stories, and Not Another New Year's was steamy enough to satisfy all. Hannah has gone to Coronado to confront the woman her fiancé dumped her for when she decides to throw caution to the wind and have a one-night stand with a very hot stranger. Things get complicated when a hysterical woman bursts into their room New Year's Day — and things get crazy from there. I haven't read the first book in the series, but I followed the story line just fine. I will say this piqued my interest in the first book. If you want some laughs, suspense and steam, pick this up for a cool New Year's read.

Nope. I didn't get into this book at all and skimmed through a lot of it just to get to the end. I found it incredibly dull and that's in large part due to Hannah the chickensh!t doormat of a heroine. What kind of moron is engaged to someone for 3 years and doesn't wonder why the guy was never home long enough for them to sleep together. Hannah was a complete victim and her whole purpose in the story was to track down the woman who 'stole' her fiancé. At the beginning of the book she has her stuff stolen and then goes to a bar in a foreign city and accepts multiple drinks from strange men and then caps the night off by going home with another man and blacks out. The naivety was strong with this one. I'm being harsh but obviously I like my heroines to be strong, smart and witty and so this book was not for me.

The most interesting (that's being generous) part of the book was Troy (Tanner's brother) and Dezi's relationship. I would have rather read a book about them. At least they had sparks!

Wow, are there ever a lot of sex scenes in this book. Like, a lot.
The blurb basically tells all, no need to rehash here. Typical rom-com chick lit, girl meets guy, falls in love, so does he, everyone is happy. Lots of stuff in between, but those are the bare bones. I was more interested in Desiree and Troy than in Hannah and Tanner, to be honest. Their (finally!) hook up was a bit over the top, though. "Come on girl, climb on" was basically Troy's winning line to Desiree, and after all the bullshit he pulled with her, that shouldn't have been enough.
A light, fun, beach read. Read for fun and some light escapism, and lots of sex. Don't read if you're trying to score a higher IQ.

This was OK for a quick read. There's nothing that stands out or sets this one apart from any other light romance. The cast of characters are pretty average, the story is light on plotline, and the dialogue is sometimes tedious. The two main characters, Tanner and Hannah, are self-centered and see just about every situation from their perspective only. They eventually figure out they're being self-centered and then quickly change only to do it again, and again, and again. Things happen quickly, without any development. Then, there's the side story of Tanner's brother, Troy, and Tanner's nemesis, Desiree. The whole premise of how Desiree destroyed Tanner's career is more than far-fetched.

This book is not what I expected. It not only follows the relationship between Tanner and Hannah, but also Tanner's brother Troy and Dez. Having both story lines play out kept it interesting and had me wondering what was going to happen next. The story was way longer than I expected (but I am not complaining) and there were a few plot twists I didn't see coming. My only complaint: I wasn't ready for it to be over. I would have loved to have gotten a little more insight in to how things were going with Troy and Dez. An epilogue would have been icing on the cake for me.

The issue here is that you have the typical beautiful flawless heroine who doesn’t know she’s beautiful and is so naive you can’t possibly root for her. There are components planted that would allow for a more thrilling story, but the author intentionally shies away from anything too complicated. In short, not much substance.

Fun book

Writing was just okay. Too much meaningless “stuff” that made the story longer than it needed to be. Spelling errors, no breaks between scenes that made things confusing. And the ending was too abrupt.

This was very good. I enjoyed it but at the same time wished that Dez and Troy had their own book to resolve and explore their romance instead of it being shoved into this one it was like reading two different books at once

Hannah’s life is upside down since she discovered that her fiancé got married to another one behind her back. She decides that she deserves a holiday, and takes a flight to Coronado island, a little piece of paradise in California. Her uncle, a secret agent, has given her the contact details of one of his ex employee, Tanner Hart, who lives in Coronado, so that he can help her if she needs tips.

Tanner Hart lost his job as a secret agent almost a year before, because of a kiss: a kiss from the princess he was supposed to protect. because of the kiss, his partner lost her life, and Tanner got fired. He swore to never, ever have a woman in his life, because they just bring problems. Since then, he’s been working at his brother’s Troy’s bar, the Hart’s. Troy was once in the military. When Tanner’s ex boss asks him to look after his niece Hannah, it is understood that if tanner takes good care of Hannah, he can have his job back.

When Hannah and Tanner meet, it’s electric. But when the morning comes and they understand who they are, Tanner panics. After a lot of adventures, our two lovers will finally be together.

This book is addictive and sexy, and it’s a very easy read! I loved reading Tanner and Hannah’s story, who help each other going past their own traumas. Désirée and Troy are also very colourful characters, with one fighting his desire and the other one seducing him as much as she can. Two very cute couples 🙂

It is a Harlequin type of book, full of naughty and sexy scenes. But it isn’t just about sex :p There is also a police plot, emotions, discoveries… I loved that the author went a bit further than just « they had lots of hot and sweaty sex ».

A nice discovery, a light and sexy read (be careful, if your man is in the vicinity while you’re reading this book, you might as well eat him alive!), that is a perfect fit for the Cold Winter Challenge. Indeed, Hannah arrives on Coronado Island… for New Year’s Eve!

This book started out pretty funny when Hannah left her small hometown and went on a holiday. Things started to go wrong for her before she left the airport. She had never left the little town she grew up in where everybody knew everybody else so she didn't know how to handle the completely different world she found herself in.

After finding out her fiance had been cheating on her, Hannah stayed clear of men. But 4 years of this lonely, secluded life was enough so she went on a holiday to Coronado, California. Her uncle was concerned about her taking the trip so he contacted Tanner Hart to watch out for her when she got there. Since he had been Tanner's boss in the Secret Service, Tanner couldn't refuse the request/order.

Hannah's holiday started out badly when she had her bags and purse stolen in the airport. Having nowhere to go she went into the bar she was to meet Tanner in the next day. There she hooked up with a one-night-stand. Something she had never done before but since she wanted to change from the predictable woman she had always been, she went with it. Add to that, she didn't have anywhere to stay and she thought it was a perfect decision. Until the OMG moment when they realized they hadn't given their real names and Hannah had actually slept with Tanner.

This was a steamy story with lots of sex scenes. Hannah sure did let her inner wild child out. I liked the relationship between Dez and Troy. He fought his attraction to her for the longest time but couldn't keep putting off his sexual desire. The mystery of the bad guy attempting to kill Dez because of her wealthy father, Prince al-Maddah, added to this interesting story.

This was certainly an entertaining read, but I wasn't riveted. That was mainly because there was so much explicit sex. I say a good writer can write a wonderful romance without detailed bedroom scenes.

Hannah Davis is a sweet second grade teacher who has pretty much drifted through her life, allowing her family the direction, after her sister was killed in an automobile accident. After finding out that her fiancee of four years married another woman without even telling her or his parents she needs to let loose and decided to take a small vacation to Coronado, while secretly planning to confront Caroline the bride. Meanwhile her Uncle Geoff, who works for the Secret Service has requested that Tanner Hart, a Secret Service agent on suspension, look out for her. Tanner has been celibate for 11 months, doing pertinence for his last service when a fellow agent was killed and his best friend lost an eye. Hannah arrives at the airport, on New year's Eve, where her luggage and purse, containing her cell phone, wallet and id are all stolen. Without anywhere to go, she stumbles into the bar owned by Tanner's brother and into Tanner's arm, although they both give each other false names. So begins a comedy of errors, with danger and intrigue thrown in. There is a second romance going on between Tanner's brother Troy and the source of all Tanner's problems, Desiree. This book was delightful to read as every other book that I have read from this author. The characters are all well developed, though often making stupid decisions.

Steamy double stories between 2 brothers who, despite their best efforts, find themselves falling in love with 2 women. Tanner, a former Secret Service agent, is assigned by his former boss to guard Hannah, a school teacher visiting. If he can keep her safe during her visit, his former boss promises to reinstate him as an agent. However, the woman he almost hooks up with on NYE turns out to be Hannah, who, unbeknownst to Tanner, was recently dumped by her fiancé and has come to town to find the other woman to find out what she has than Hannah doesn't. Once he finds out the next morning who she is, he resolves to stay away from her, but, if he did, there wouldn't be a story here.

Tanner's brother, Troy, runs a bar in town and Tanner's friend Desiree, a beautiful and wealthy young woman whose family has basically abandoned her, is a constant thorn in his side. And, we all know what's really behind the animosity he has toward her.

Hannah's belongings have all been stolen, and Desiree offers to let Hannah stay with her and lends her clothing, so the two stories are intertwined. Drama surfaces, and it seems that no one can stay away from each other. It's amusing and sexy and fairly well written. Some grammatical and spelling errors, but not enough to be distracting.

Second in the Holiday Duet, this can be read as a stand-alone book.

Hannah leaves home and a bad year behind, where her fiancé dumped her after years of engagement while he was in the military. He got married without even breaking off the engagement. Her Uncle makes arrangements with one of his men on leave from the secret service for misconduct who was set up. He wants Tanner to keep an eye on his niece while she is on vacation and act as her tour guide. If he does a good job with Hannah, he can have his secret service job back. The two meet and have sex under fake names. That makes everything more difficult when they were arranged to meet and through the coming days. There is a secondary love story with Tanner's brother, Troy, and Hannah's temporary roommate (and the person who got Tanner on trouble), Desi.

There are a number of spelling errors and even more spacing text errors that distract from the story.

This book was fine. You could seethe big elements coming a mile away but at least there were steamy scenes to pass the time. I was a little surprised how they wrapped Desiree's pseudo story and I really question Uncle Geoff and his level within the Secret Service if he didn't think his niece might have issues.

Lots of heavy topics in this book are kind of lightly glanced over and I'm pretty sure that wasn't a strong plan. Just don't put so much in there if you don't want to really slog through it and come to a resolution at the end.

Also, FOR THE LOVE OF SPELLCHECK or a DICTIONARY PEOPLE!!!! Why was Service spelled Ser vice in 99% of the instances in this book? And why were panties pan ties is most of the book? It completely takes you out of the story to see these mistakes on the kindle. Ugh.... super annoying.

This was an OK quick read. This book focuses on two different relationships that form. Tanner and Hannah are the main characters, and side characters Troy (Tanner's brother) and Desiree.

There are some aspects that move very quickly, but others quite slow. The slow being Hannah tracking down the woman who married her fiance. Each of these characters (with the exception of Desiree) are haunted by their pasts, and they allow said past to control who they are. Desiree, to me, is the only one that appears to grow, as while she has had a 'wild' past from what we've been shown/described, we can see that she has learnt from this and has grown into the outgoing person she is, and who we are introduced to. And to be honest, she is the only character I liked throughout this whole story.

This was the second book in a series about holidays and romance. Tanner Hart had been asked by his old boss in the Secret Service to look after his niece Hannah and see that she has a good time on her vacation to Coronado, California. He told Tanner that she had had a rough time in the last few years and he would appreciate him showing Hannah around town. What Tanner did not know was that he had run into Hannah on New Years Eve when they both had had too much to drink and neither one of them told the truth about their names. Now that he knows exactly who she is, what is he going to do? They both seem to be attracted to each other but they are both hiding secrets. Can they overcome their past to find a future? Cute read.

I have mixed feelings on this one. I liked the story. Hannah was a doormat and Tanner was a martyr cum laud. Hannah really was a sweetheart and Tanner couldn't keep himself together enough to figure out which side of the fence he sat on. When something comes to light from her past in the book he blows a nut. Why? What damn difference did it make? Not to mention he's misleading her all throughout her visit..... notice I didn't say lying, which is what he actually did, but hey who's counting his misdeeds. What a dork. Hard to believe he was Secret Service. Woe is him.
It's actually kind of comical so you'll probably really enjoy this just on Tanner's screw up's alone.

It’s alright but definitely far from any sort of spectacular romance or even a favorite that I’ve ever read. It had some brief good points but honestly could have had more elaboration on certain events and had things told a little differently to make it more interesting. A little too much focus on sex and more of actually establishing a foundation of a relationship. And the ending was disappointing what with certain characters left hanging with not knowing what happened with them in the end and how everything was resolved with the last tell tale event that took place. Would I read it again? Probably not. Would I recommend it? No.

Hannah goes on vacation. As soon as she arrives in California her luggage and purse are stolen. Now all she knows is that she is supposed to meet someone named Tanner at Hart’s bar the next day. So she heads over to the bar figuring she will live a little and maybe find someone for the night. Only she finds Tanner but they give each other different names. Kinda funny when Dez shows up and offers to marry Tanner while Hanna is sleeping in his bed. Some interesting situations arise and the side story of Dez and Tanners brother Troy is good also. I can say I enjoyed reading this book.

I found it particularly appropriate to read this book on New Year's Eve for some reason. And I loved getting a "two-fer," two romances in one story: Hannah and Tanner and Desiree and Troy. They were both totally believable and so very engaging. While I loved the heroes, I adored the heroines. I could relate to them, to their insecurities, to the things that made you cry about what had happened in their lives, everything. Bravo, Ms. Ridgway, this one was hard to put down!

A two-fer on the HEAs

So I am glad we get Troy and Desiree’s story also, as I was wondering about them at the end of the first book.
Primary story of Hannah and Tanner picks up on the New Years Eve directly after the first book. Hannah has come to town for adventure and to lay some old ghosts to rest. She finds the adventure very quickly. Tanner gets to rescue her.
Troy and Dez strike a lot of sparks but finally come together.
A very good book.

The main characters were boring and the ending was stupid.

I'm giving it 3-stars for thw two side characters, Troy and Desiree, who had more chemistry and were more emotionally drawn out that the two MCs. I read this book years and years ago and I still remember that scene with Troy and Desiree and their cell phones like it was just yesterday. Powerful shit.
